    Slightly deceptive IMO that the black Friday page shows an image of a 24TB drive and the price of "From $512"

      The shipping alone from SPD make it around the same price as what Neology are offering… $120 it quoted me to ship one HDD to me. Plus if anything goes wrong their return policy says we have to pay shipping to send back… No thanks. Would rather deal with a local business.

        Shipping does kill it a bit… though they're including 3years warranty, so there's definitely a trade-off

          Valid… But then when you start adding more drives, especially the bigger ones, it drives the price over the $1k pricepoint quite quickly and then you're also dealing with GST etc on top of the price… Suddenly even with the 3 year warranty it's not that appealing of a deal (in my opinion, anyway)

          The listing was initialy for 24TB, 26TB and 28TB HDDs, later expanded to 16TB, 18TB , 20 TB and 22TB. So the first image uploaded was 24TB.
          Not mean to be deceptive… but I understand where you come from. So fixed it to set the expectation right to customers.

    Just going to wait til refurbished drives get back to $15-$20/TB.

    Odds on, this AI boom cycle will have their current drives hit their 'scheduled drive replacement date' in 2 years time, so prices should drop back to below $20/TB by then.

      They were used HDD from decommissioned servers in the data centres. Cleaned physically and has data wiped. Tested with 100% health.

      There are some genuine refurbishment techniques such as refilling the helium in drives, but in reality that's pretty much never done - because it costs so much to do for everyone except the manufacturer, that it's cheaper to just buy a new drive. And even the manufacturer's don't usually bother with it either.

      'Refurbished' actually means:

      • used / second hand
      • typically an enterprise level drive designed for performance and reliability (but these can be loud)
      • tested (most drives fail early on or very late in their life) with no bad sectors

      Those last 2 are the reason some people like to buy these, if the savings are enough to offset the risks in certain use cases (eg if you have several in RAID to ensure you don't lose data if one drive dies).
