The laminated screen with P3 colour is also a nice touch. iPads are something people tend to keep for a loooong time. A bit of CPU overkill can't hurt.
Look at older iPad Pro. The 2018 iPad Pro still holds up today because of how incredibly powerful the A12X was. It's 7 years old.

i got the 256GB version this week. From what I read, the M3 warrants it

For basic use the A16 should be fine, however the M3 is more powerful and will have better longevity if you plan to keep it for a number of years.
The recent iPad OS26 was making "M-series" chips chug, and I can’t imagine A16 would have run well based on that.
