Western Digital Gold 18TB 3.5" Enterprise Class SATA 6 Gb/s HDD 7200 RPM Cache Size 512MB

Shipper / Seller: Amazon US
Says: Usually dispatched within 6 weeks

$533.64/18 = $29.65 per TB, I'm guessing less if gift cards work?

I don't know a lot about hard drives so please feel free to let me know if this isn't a deal

But I been finding it hard to find hard drives under $30 per TB. And these are Enterprise drives so I assume that they should be quite reliable but maybe louder/less tuned for NAS use? I hope the 5 year warranty works as its under Amazon US

  • Since HDDs are fragile, I'm being skeptical for these to be shipped from US without damage.

Can anyone share their experience with HDD shipment from Amazon US? How was the packing and if they got delivered in good condition?

    • They delivered mine with an Amazon box and that's it. No padding but at least they didn't use a large box…

      • That doesn't instill much confidence, especially for a $533 item.

      • What the hell? You serious? Not even foam or shredded paper?

Even random ebay sellers do at least that much.

    • Last time I bought one was (at least) a couple of years ago, but they weren't packaged well (original boxes in a larger cardboard box, with a few scrunched up pieces of paper doing not very much since it didn't even remotely fill the empty space).

Out of 4 drives, 1 was DOA, and the return process was annoying since there were local affiliated Amazon return sites listed, but either the information was outdated or the employees/business had no idea what to do. Found one in the end after visiting 3-4 places.

    • The last 6 I purchased from Amazon which were all sent from overseas. Package was nothing special but I haven't had a single issue with any of them.

  • I've bought at least 8 WD Red Pro NAS HDDs from Amazon US. They were all shipped in original WD packaging. HDDs were in a sealed antistatic bag with a silica gel packet. This was in a sturdy cardboard box with a plastic insert that holds the HDD suspended. Amazon then the put this WD package inside an Amazon box that was a bit too big and added a sheet of brown scrunched up paper. The HDD box moves around inside the Amazon box as the brown paper is ineffective.

Delivery times ranged from about 10 days to about 6 weeks.

Despite the iffy packaging, (so far) none of the drives had any problems.

At one stage I ordered four HDDs at the same time. Amazon shipped two from California and two from somewhere like Virginia. They arrived two weeks apart. Amazon refunded about 1/3 of the import duties on one of the pairs of the HDDs, but not the other pair.
