ATO Stops Accepting Prepaid Gift Cards for Online Payments

Full credit to GCDB
The ATO now requires a billing address and a phone number or email that matches the information held by the financial institution. This isn’t an issue if you pay with your own credit or debit card, but you may not have the required details if you choose to pay with a prepaid card.

8k? Thats rookie numbers - be an absolute chad like this poster and do 40k

      • That is crazy.

        • If we are comparing, I have put through 6 figs through at once.

I also got caught out with a 20k positive balance once - had to transfer it to another payment reference as I couldn't pull the money out any other way.
          Paid off my sister's hecs.

So they don't want clean money?

Every few months I go to the Crown Casino to wash my money. I wouldn't go near the river though.

I successfully used the easypay phone service to use 4 prepaid digital Coles mastercards I bought before the ban.

Sad but unsurprising. It was a handy loophole while it lasted.
I always find it funny that they hand you a leaflet that says "scam alert, don't pay tax debt using gift cards" or something like that.

Good overall. Some of the nightmare stories as mentioned above of people trying to get around loopholes with GC's is insane.

Also might reduce some scam likelihood, although if you're getting scammed by purchasing GC's it probably won't help you anyhow.

It's not really about gift card scams more likely it's trying to stop money laundering and fraud. They are trying to stop people doing refund scams with anonymous payment methods.

Once again dumbarses sharing things normies can't handle on Ozbargain and good things come to an end.

What do you expect from people? Idiots trying to do tax refund scams and wonder why the ATO stopped because every man and his dog started doing it!

Just look at the people who were doing the GST refund scam, not pretty. It's amazing these people can actually use a computer.

    @whyisave
No gift cards payment to ATO anymore

This, and Zippay charging $2.50 per BPAY transaction from tomorrow :(

Won't be any way to earn points while paying off HECS without a fee anymore.

    • Really?!?!

    Sad times

I have only had 2~3 gift cards with issues, was less than 1% of cards I ever got.
Don't doubt that people have had issues, but from my own experience it was quite rare

  • About time… i support that.

  • About damn time….

  • I managed to pay ATO $1250 in Coles MCs on Saturday via the easypay portal - hopefully just in time.

  • What's the best way to pay the ATO these days?
Any way I can accumulate some points while doing it?

  • Wonder what is the best way to spending the remaining giftcard?

    from article:
If it was a discount on the gift cards then you would essentially receive a discount your tax.

dumb ass, how it is a discount on the tax?
it is discount on gift card and one's efforts to buy gift cards and pay.
