AmEx Statement Credit: Spend $100 or More at Selected Independent Liquor Stores, Get $30 Back (Up to 2 Times) @ American Express

1120

This is a repeat and slight dilution of the previous offers in Christmas / New Year 2024 and April 2025:

  • Statement credits are now capped at $60 per card, not $90 / $120.
  • Available on supplementary cards as well.
  • The list of participating locations is linked to this post and has changed since the last deal

This is a great deal in Tasmania, as gift cards from the Cellarbrations stores work across the popular inner city IGA/Hill Street stores. Effectively a 30% discount on $200 groceries. Not sure if there are similar combinations for mainlanders.

Save the Offer to your eligible Card and spend $100 or more, in one or more transactions, at participating Independent Liquor Stores by 15/12/2025 to receive a $30 credit, up to a maximum of 2 times. Exclusions apply.

  • the iga card I bought last year still has some left

    • They are put up their games using the new IGA rewards program, some good deals to have now, eg 30 cans of Pepsi $15 after cashback.

  • +2

Stores are decreased in WA on this list this time.

  • can you buy groceries from participating IGA and still count towards the spend?

    • +3

It depends on how the IGA is set up.

      • If in-store purchases of liquor and groceries are processed through the same checkouts, it should work.

      • If in-store purchases of liquor are processed through checkouts in one section of the store and purchases of groceries are processed through checkouts in a separate section of the store, it may not work, as AMEX may only have been told about the checkouts in the liquor section.

If the IGA you prefer to shop at accepts physical Metcash eftpos gift cards, you should consider purchasing a gift card from a participating retailer selling physical Metcash eftpos gift cards first, as that will allow you to use it in-store at any IGA accepting physical Metcash eftpos gift cards (not just the ones participating in this deal). I used a Cellarbrations eftpos gift card at an IGA last weekend to pay for my groceries, and that IGA does not even sell liquor.

      • WM, you are usually very knowledgeable about this sort of stuff. But I actually think you might be wrong here, because:

        1. While the offer is for spending at the independent liquor stores, it doesn't stipulate you must only spend it on liquor.
        2. The offer lists all those stores with their address locations. So if the grocery section is located at that address, which it must be, then that's a qualifying location as long as it's the same business entity (same ABN), regardless of the grocery vs alcohol sections of the store.

        Just my thoughts. YMMV.

        • I bought from an IGA which have different liquor and grocery sections today, let's see what happened.

          • @couger: Did you pay at the grocery section?

            • +2

@foxes28: Yes, grocery side, i received a email from amex that my offer redeemed. Liquor and grocery share the same check out area, but in two side. The receipt only shows the shop name.

  • Any stores in Melbourne that do Myki recharge? There was an IGA last time in Richmond which doesn't seem to be on the list anymore.

    • I charged my myki 3 times at that IGA, they were pretty confused the first 2 times I came in but the third time they asked whether I was paying with Amex or not - must have been many people doing the same

      • What did they say once you said you're paying with AMEX?

        • +2

I said I wasn't, showed him my commbank card on apple pay and swapped it last second before paying. I'm sure he realised when the terminal said AMEX SALE but I'd already left by then.

          • @desktopzero: Why hide it? I doubt it's coming out of his pay packet

            • +4

@Jolakot: some people treated other's wining worse than his own losing, if you had been to that IGA, you know what I mean.

              • @couger: well said. a certain group of people prefer 'you-lose-i-win' over 'win-win'.

      • Did you do as part of this offer or last time? Is there any IGA on current participating locations that does Myki recharge?

    • IGA Northcote, IGA Travancore, IGA Caulfield North.

edit: The Richmond store denied me from reloading after finding out i was paying with amex

      • IGA Port Melbourne, Piedimonte's, IGA East Melbourne, IGA Preston. Could be more.

        • how did you find out that those IGA can recharge myki? Did you just go to the stores and ask or we have this info at the websites? Thanks.

      • Why does the store care? It's not against the T&C to pay for Myki with Amex, is it?

        • I was told last time at an IGA that they don't get much commission from Myki so they want you to spend the money on other products that have higher margins

    • Any stores in Melbourne on that list sell gift cards?

  • Apparently lot more IGA stores got added in the list this time. Will see if they sell ultimate gift cards anywhere in Sydney. Appreciate if anyone knows . Will report back if I could find and successfully trigger the cashback

    • +4

I doubt Ultimate gift cards are sold at any IGA stores at the moment, as the Ultimate gift card website does not list IGA as an official seller.

The most likely chains of IGA-branded stores selling third-party gift cards in your region would be Ritchies or Karellas (and I think the latter operates stores under the Supamart brand). This entry on GCDB may be of interest to you.

      • +2

Thanks for the detailed response as always. I just went by the official website here which lists IGA

        • Update: Today went to Locali IGA George st and tested with 1 ultimate gift card and email triggered in 10 minutes. Went back and bought ultimate and Apple gift cards. Only catch is you cannot do split transaction with multiple cards to buy . Ended up buying 4 * 100 gift cards

    Very few places in QLD

  • Cheers OP, fantastic deal, this pays for over half the annual fee with x8 transactions :).

Missed this earlier when I logged in! Fantastic deal, noting reduced to 2 from 4 transactions this year and one of my Cellarbrations has been removed in the CBD.

Just as a further note, if Mitre 10 have discounted gift cards before Xmas, you can pay for these with the Cellarbrations cards :). This gave me nearly 50% discount last year

    • +3

Keep in mind that there appears to be a new version of Cellarbrations gift cards floating around, as the Metcash gift card website now has a filter for Cellarbrations gift cards under the Other section.

I am not sure whether this new version can be used outside of participating Cellarbrations stores, especially since all Cellarbrations stores in Hobart participating in this deal accepts both the old (eftpos) and new versions.

I suggest you double-check the gift card number (if you can) before purchasing a gift card at one of these stores to see whether they are still selling the old eftpos version or this mysterious new version (or travel to the Bottle-O in Lauderdale!). It looks like the Porters Liquor in Sandy Bay does not accept any Metcash gift cards whatsoever, so I doubt they will sell any gift cards.

      • +1

Cheers Wookie, appreciate the info, will do a test run first and report back

      • +3

Bought all mine at the Cellarbrations in Cambridge Park. Can confirm they are all 502125 gift cards. Plenty of stock available this morning.

        • Just a heads up - when I bought a Cellarbrations gift card at that store during the late 2024 offer, AMEX never sent me a confirmation email, and it took 13 or 14 business days for a statement credit to be credited to my account. Other stores - e.g. the Cellarbrations at Glenorchy Central - triggered confirmation emails and were credited much faster.

Hopefully statement credits from that store are credited much faster for this offer.

        • Cheers TF! A few of the same are available in Glenorchy as well. I do need to get 2 more to finish off my 8, so might drive down to Cambridge tomorrow 😀. Just to note as others have as well, one $200 transaction receives a $60 credit

        • I noticed that the cards, while 502125, didnt have the EFTPOS writing on them. Have you tried any at an IGA?

          • +1

@Coops1: I think the eftpos logo was removed a while ago from Cellarbrations gift cards, as I bought three with card numbers starting with 502125 and no eftpos logo through the previous two AMEX independent liquor offers, yet they all worked fine recently at Hill Street Grocer and Salamanca Fresh IGA (as well as a Bottle-O and a Thirsty Camel).

    • I think you should be able to pay for Mitre 10 gift cards with Mitre 10 gift cards if the checkout guy dont stop you.

      • Cant do that. Could do cellarbrations to Mitre 10 gift as they were recognised differently.. Wookie could explain it better

        • Oh so M10 gc is not those standard metcash eftpos gc? I thought those metcash ones are just treated as regular eftpos saving tx at checkouts.

          • @timedzone: Mitre 10 can only be used at Mitre 10 from what I am aware..still Metcash just Mitre 10 specific

  • Can an iga gift card be used anywhere else other than iga stores?

    • +2

It depends on the type of IGA gift card you are talking about, as there are currently three types floating around:

      • If you have an IGA eftpos gift card (with gift card number starting with 502125), it can be used at any store listed on the Metcash gift card website as accepting physical gift cards starting with 502125 (including listed IGA stores, listed Mitre 10 stores, listed Cellarbrations stores, etc).

      • If you have a physical IGA gift card with a barcode on the back, I think that can only be used at IGA stores shown on the aforementioned gift card website with a physical gift card number of Other.

      • If you have a IGA digital gift card, I think that can only be used at IGA stores shown on the aforementioned gift card website under the e-gift card section.

I am not sure whether there is any difference between physical IGA gift cards with barcodes and digital IGA gift cards in terms of acceptance…

      • +1

Thanks for the explanation. Looks like mine will only work in IGA stores. Card starts with a different 502 sequence.

  • +6

I purchased $100 iga card. Wait and see now whether it triggers the email from Amex as a qualifying spend.

    • +1

      Update?

      • +4

Yes, email arrived a couple hours later. Credit was on the account the following day

  • +1

The linked table for Queensland has QA Hotel - am I right to assume this offer applies to the James St Cellarbrations next door? Since the offer is supposed to be targetting indy bottleshops? And presumably the same is true for Hotel Diana and the Cellarbrations Mater Hill next door? Or is that a bad assumption to make?

  • +2

spend $100 or more, in one or more transactions

This should mean you can make one transaction of $200 and get $60 back.

    • legit?

      • +7

Can confirm, got $60 credit posted this morning.

        • Also did this, $200 gift card in one transaction and got $60 back.

The other advantage of doing this is that avoids Amex's fraud alert trigger if you try to use the same card for 2 separate $100 transactions one after the other. When I tried that Amex sent me into a text/email and I had to confirm that it was me.

        • How long does it take for you to receive the $60 credit? My payment is not pending anymore but I still haven’t receive the credit?

          • +1

@frozzer: Generally a day or two after its not pending.

  • Thank you for pointing out the IGA gift cards in your post.

I had seen this offer in the past on the app and not paid attention as none were really local to me.
However, I think I'm willing to travel in Sydney to get gift cards if that means 30% discount off groceries.
It'll be considered a bonus if I can buy iTunes or other GC.

  • +1

Anyone able to share locations where we might find IGA / Cellarbrations eftpos giftcards in Melbourne please?

  • +1

PORTERS SURRY HILLS 400 Elizabeth St Has Hibiki Harmony for $189.99 so $159.99 post discount if anyone's interested.

  • +3

Knoxfield IGA has $50, $100 and variable load IGA gift cards

    • Thanks for reporting, do they have third party branded gift cards also?

      • Not that I saw. These cards were next to the counter.

        • +1

I dropped by today and didn't see any, asked the cashier and they said they don't have any…

          • @Craze: Must have sold out. Thanks for letting me know. Was going to send a family member to buy a gift card on their supplementary Amex card.

          • @Craze: Third party branded gift cards or IGA gift cards? I bought IGA gift cards from them on Monday but there weren't many left on display then.

            • @desperate: IGA gift cards. Don't think they stock third party branded GC? Either way when I asked cashier he said they didn't have any 🤷‍♂️

      • +1

I tried calling a lot of IGAs in Victoria and couldn't find a single one in Melbourne that sells third party gift cards but there was one called Daly's in Koroit that sold TCN cards, great for people that live near there but it's way too far from Melbourne for me to make the drive

  • Would this promo work buying Netflix, Amazon, Google or Apple giftcards?

As a single I am not going to be spending $600 in an IGA store in 9 days.

$600 = $100 spend x twice per card x three amex cards with the offer saved.

If it works that is $180 ($30 x 6) credit not bad

    • Yes, it will. Do they sell these gift cards though?

      • I rarely go into my local IGA Romeo store (North Sydney), will have to go visit today.

If my local has a GF that I can fully use later I will try to trigger one $30 credit buying a combination of groceries and hopefully $50 giftcard.

        • Let us know what GCs they have.

Can we charge Opal cards there?

          • +1

@jonecski: @jonecski, yes. Recharge of Opal is possible at the North Sydney. There is no need to advise the cashier how you're paying.

          • @jonecski: Just Apple Gift Cards at IGA North Syndey.

There are three more IGA stores listed near me
Will have to check out the situation at
            Quay Sydney CBD
            Wynyard CBD
            Cammeray

      • None near me did (WA).

I would love some Amazon GCs

      • They do but very few do. Good luck finding one near you :)

    • As a single you have three different AMEX cards?

      • +1

Yeah have a Platinum charge Card, the Reserve complimentary card plus a zero fee Essential card.

Plat works out free for me, as I get

        $850 ($450 + $400) travel vouchers
        $200 ($100 + $100) dining credits (I reduce it 50%) rather than face value $200+$200
$150 direct cash substitutes ie this offer (could be $180 by itself if I maximised it) and numerous $20 back speciality gift cards, there must have been at least 6 this year meaning $120) etc

Above leaves me $250 short but usually there are other offers I fully value at 1:1 that more than make up the rest. Like the 10% to 20% off small shops etc.

    • Success buying $52 groceries and $50 Apple Giftcard using the groceries checkout

IGA North Sydney (station/Greenwood) do have separate Alcohol checkout but I didn't use that.

Unfortunately IGA North Sydney only have Apple Gift Card

  • does IGA sell physical GC? will it count?

    • +1

Yes they do (IGA gift cards) and yes they count

  • Bought 2x $100 IGA GC from Mint Fresh IGA yesterday (the store has combined checkout for grocery and liquor section) and received the standard AMEX around 10 mins later

  • I'm new to Melbourne. Among the list of location in Victoria, which is the closest to Melbourne cbd to top up myki card? Thank you.

    • +2

      446 VICTORIA PD
      EAST MELBOURNE

      50 MT ALEXANDER ROAD
      TRAVANCORE

      43 BEST STREET
      NTH FITZROY

      • The East Melbourne one doesn't even accept Amex to start with, despite being listed in Amex's offer PDF.

        • Thanks for this, saving me a trip to there. Do you happen to know any others close to CBD that we can do myki top up? Thanks.

  • How quickly are your statement credits appearing?

I made a purchase last night about 12 hours ago and still have no email or statement credit appearing.

    • Got an e-mail within minutes of my purchase at a participating liquor store last night

    • statement normally come when the transaction settled, I got them after 2 days.

    • Bought on the 3rd and the credit came today

    • Good news, it took about 20 hours, but the confirmation email has come through.

  • Hi this worked at QQT to buy an IGA gift card. Email came through the next day.

  • Anyone has experience with this in SA? Would love to hear your experience. :)

  • -1

How long does it take to receive the "offer used" email for this one?

    • 10 minutes to a day. (bought mixture of groceries and gift cards)
I used it on two cards,

on Essential card got the email in 5minutes and the $30 credit is showing in the app 48 hours later
on Platinum charge, email took a day, credit not shown up yet (but was only used yesterday less than 24 hours right now)

      • Thank you for your reply. I received the emails this morning
