King C Gillette Double Edge Safety Razor + 5 Razor Blades $14.94 + Delivery ($0 C&C) @ Chemist Warehouse

1010

Haven't seen this posted in a long while and thought it was time to. This is the perfect razor for beginners as it's quite mild and is more forgiving. You will still need to use good technique and you can use YouTube for that. The blades included are great to use when you start out. Never ever buy replacement blades from the supermarket though. They are mostly bad and expensive. Look at the list below for the ones I have used and recommend for beginners. They are a bit sharper than the one that comes with the razor but you shouldn't feel much difference other than they can last a bit longer than the kcg blades. If you have any questions feel free to ask and I will try to reply. All the products here are ones I have used including the razor.

I have made a little list here of things to buy with it. This is with the best prices and links at the point of posting. I have put a guide to show you what price to buy at based on price tracking and when I bought them.

Blades:

Bic Chrome Platinum OOS (Normally $15.75 with S&S)

https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07RF75RZM

Dorco Prime Platinum OOS (Around $17 Is normal. Back In stock but major price increase. Don't buy)

https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B01H4KQYJY/

Haven't tried these but they are apparently good (added because others are OOS):

Indian Gillette Wilkinson Sword (Normally $12. Not as high quality and extremely cheap in India)

Shave cream:

Jack The Barber shave cream (Buy half price)

  • I blade per shave or do u get more out of it?

    • +6

Depends on the blade. Most will get you about 5 shaves before they start giving you irritation. There are some that last up to 10+ and there are some like feather where the blade edge is so thin they lose most of their sharpness after the first 2 goes. The blades I linked will last about 6 shaves before needing to be replaced.

      • +1

I use Feather and they last about 6 shaves. I tend to "strop" them after a couple of uses though just by pushing them along the band bit of a towel. They're cheap enough not to bother with doing that, but I'm even cheaper.

    • I use mine for probably 5 to 6 times before it becomes a chore to use as you can feel the drag and dullness.
      Then I replace.

      • What blades do you use?

        • +1

I'll be honest - some rando ones from Woolworths IIRC.
These https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/30573/gill… (I'm not endorsing them but I haven't had any issues)

          • +2

@String name: They are good but very expensive. You really should look online for some other options. The shaver shop is great start also as they sell a few different packs of blades like that for cheap. Not very good price compared to pack of 100 but they are great to test with. Try the feather and derby blades just to see if you like them then buy online.

            • @HaydosK: I appreciate the advice.
I got into it a couple of years ago as a test and love this shaving method better than the others.

          • @String name: Urgh $14 for only 10 blades, $14 should get you at least 100 great quality blades like the Astra Greens.

            https://www.shophairco.com.au/astra-superior-platinum-double…

        • +3

I use Astra Platinum blades. 100 pack will last you YEARS and they're pretty affordable.
But more importantly, buy a sample pack with different blades in and try a few out for yourself. It really does come down to your individual skin and what feels good. And it's all trial and error, which is exactly why they make the sample packs!

    • +2

They can last quite a while, depends a lot on your hair thickness and also just how picky you are for it losing its edge.

Recommend getting a bundle of blades and just see what you like. Some are scratchy, some are too quick to bite you.

      • That is correct. Can get many months from a 10 cent blade using everyday.

        • +1

You can but should you? My 5 shave suggestion is because of recorded measurements. After a month the blade will be multiple times less sharp and I know this is ozbargain but I don't think it's worth saving a few cents using one blade for a few months.

          • -1

@HaydosK: Well, im not shaving with a blunt blade. When it does blunt i will replace. Do you replace kitchen knives after 5 uses? I find a new blade is too sharp and leads to bleeding, so am all for a slightly less sharper blade.

            • @Crownanchor: Kitchen knifes are a lot less sharp than razors and they are made to be that way so they retain their edge. Also if you are having problems with your blade you might want to try a different one because some people find some blades too sharp or not smooth.

              • @HaydosK: I bleed on almost every new blade, its fine after three shaves. Have a range of different DE blades and am able to get the most out of using the same blade for months, this just works out better.

                • @Crownanchor: It does seem the blade is the problem but have you tried some less sharp blades or maybe it's your shaving cream that's making it not glide meaning you cut yourself? I'm not sure but I haven't heard of this being an issue before.

                  • @HaydosK: It seems like i maybe in a minority, there are a few others with this problem. Could look at solving this problem by creating an ideal blade. Have used different creams and soaps as well as different blades, and it is all the same. What i am doing is working, so no need to keep replacing blades. Probably why the dollar shave club never made any sense.

hydro 5 one blade lasted me 10 years? how long will this last?

      • +2

that’s horrendous, I cringe even thinking of the damage you’re doing to your skin

      • That's crazy

  • +4

Oh hey, I've done one of these posts before. I'll reiterate my main point, which is that if you end up being passionate about wet shaving, this can become an expensive hobby. Alternatively if you're thrifty and find gear that lasts a while then this becomes way cheaper than using those multi blade cartridge set-ups.

    • I agree it can be expensive but for me it's very enjoyable and I have spent the least on this compared to other things I enjoy. For me it's fun to try new products and perfect my technique and different shave products normally don't cost more than $5 and 100 blades cost under $20. You definitely want to be careful with the razors and shave soaps as thats where you will start to lose money quickly. Got a Henson AL13 +++ for black Friday and am loving it. I know it's not the most loved but I got it for a good price and I think Henson is overhated.

    • I started with a Muhle shaving set Mrs C gave me nearly 10 years ago as a gift. I’ve tried a couple of different razors but always gone back to the Muhle as it seems to suit my skin the best.

I definitely have tried a lot of different blades and rate the BIC blades linked above as among the best. Another good place for purchasing is local seller Vshod, who has an excellent selection and you can purchase as little as one tuck of blades. Shipping starts at a flat $9.45 so it’s best to get quite a few to make it worthwhile. Excellent for assembling a show bag of different types to try out.

I use astra and I get anywhere between 3-5 shaves before I have to change.

I alternate between this and my series 9. Key is face prep (hot face washer and good scrub to exfoliate) and the angle of the blade.

Don’t rush either. I made the mistake of trying to shave whilst my spawn were slaughtering each other around me…

    • Yep definitely important not to rush and not to use really any pressure. The braun foil shavers are good but unfortunately it causes lots of irritation on my face when I use it dry. I have to use shaving cream with mine and even then it misses a lot. If I have time using a safety razor is just better and doesn't give me any irritation if I do it correctly.

      • My Braun Series 9 also misses just below the jaw bone area and I’m frustrated to bits - it will continue to miss on both sides of the face.

Haven’t tried regular blades like this for probably 25+ years. Should I muster enough courage and move to these?! 🤔

        • +1

I think it's worth a shot. It just depends if $15 is too much to have a go. You will also need shaving cream but it doesn't have to be anything special to start out with. If shaving foam from a can works you can also do that too (doesn't work for me as it burns my face). You can use the ones I linked above but I would hold back on buying the 100 blades until you know you like using this razor. I'm happy to help you with the technique also as you do need to use it differently to a cartridge or shaver.

          • @HaydosK: Alright sir - sold. Bought one and will collect in a couple of days - seems sold out at all nearby locations.

Pls send me the technique details, if you could! ☺️

            • @emgee: Nice. It would be helpful to know what you are going to be using so I can give you the right tips. I know you are using the razor and blades but not the rest like shaving cream. What type and how you use it does matter for how I can assist.

    • I just shave after a shower and use olive oil instead of any of the usual foams, soaps etc.
I was once told that I smell lovely as I'd used a basil infused olive oil. You can bet that I'll be using that method for ever more!

  • +1

I don't like these ones much and recommend a AliExpress Yintal or Baili butterfly mechanism as a first. They are a gentle angle and the mechanism is a lot nicer than the twist heads.

Twist heads have their place as more precise. But butterfly is just so nice to swap blades.

But if you just want to try then picking up one of these local is easy.

    • +2

That's fair. This is a very mild razor and I only recommend it for beginners. Besides that It works well for me.

You have to be very careful with those Chinese razors though. Yintal is good but the futur clones I always see people on here talk about cut my face up really bad because of a major qc issue (I was too new to understand what was wrong). I also tried a few others and they did the same thing lol. Now I just don't order any razors from AliExpress and I'm fine but yeah be really careful. That's why I think it's not worth the hassle of waiting a few weeks just to see a broken razor arrived.

      • +2

Futur is a very aggressive razor even at low setting, and yeah higher settings are a trap.
And then they have precision problems with how the head just snaps together.

Yintal are very mild. May be too mild for some thick beards, but are great for teens.

        • +1

I did already know it was an aggressive razor but even after taking it apart it was off to one side. I think the blade wasn't aligned and I couldn't change it. If you try the QC lottery and win congrats but yeah I don't think it's worth it. I have tried multiple Chinese razors and clones and they all cut me and have qc issues while my Henson, king c Gillette and Gillette Chinese super blue all work very well. The super blue razor is an official tech clone and it amazing. If you want something from AliExpress go for that one and get a replacement handle and washer for in-between.

  • The 10 pack of blades is also half price…

    https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/113122/king-c-gillet…

    • +1

Yes but they are overpriced. They used to be quality and made in Russia like their other blades but now they are Chinese and while still good the ones I linked are better for way cheaper.

      • -4

the ones I linked are better for way cheaper.

        Where is the link?

        • +2

In the description I listed a bunch of things I have tried and like. Bic is out of stock but the dorco primes are 100 for $17 and they work better than the kcg Chinese blades. Here is the link. https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B01H4KQYJY/

          • -3

@HaydosK: They both have a 4.6 rating on Amazon.

            • +2

              @jv: Yes

              • -1

@HaydosK: OK… Thanks… I might try them when my King C finishes… They last me ages… Probably around 10 shaves before I need to change them.

                • @jv: do you prefer them to disposable lady razors?

                  • @GrandMaster: From an investment point of view ??

                    • @jv: Not so much. I guess you ladies use a lot of other male products too to cut out the gender inflation.

      • Somebody on here recommended some Russian blades a while back and I bought some out of interest. They were the worst blades I'd ever used. It felt like they'd been stamped out of old Ladas that had been left to rust in the rain.

        • Just because it's Russian or made in a certain country it does mean its good but Russia was one of the biggest razor blade manufacturers for Gillette and a few other companies (not anymore after the war). They also were known for their quality but now that Gillette is made in China they either haven't got the best equipment like they did in Russia or they are cutting corners. They don't perform as well compared to the Russian ones in a sharpness test or even when they are used to shave. Would like to know what Russian one you used though.

          • @HaydosK: They were Voskhod Teflon Coated blades. They were so bad that I threw them out rather than keep them as backups.

  • For me this was a crappy handle, bad angle couldn’t get a close shave or consistent. Blades were also down right terrible, but some feather blades. But again it’s a bad handle, Aliexpress ones do better.

    • Well yeah they definitely aren't the best blades but the razor handle is good imo especially for a first razor. It's definitely not the closest shave but I argue you want that for a starter razor. The AliExpress razors I bought cut up my face bad so I will never recommend them unless they are from a good brand like yaqi but they are more expensive than this razor. Clone ones all suck.

    • -1

Mine works great… Maybe you got a bad one ???

      • It's a mild razor, I'd be surprised if you don't get a BBS shave over three passes though.

        • Yes it's definitely doable but just need good technique

  • How do you safely store and dispose of used blades?

    • I put them back inside the little "envelope/packet" they come in, then in the bin.

    • +1

It depends on where you live (per city and per state programs or recycling centers) but you should keep them in a blade bank and not throw them in the garbage. It takes a long time to fill one of them up. Also there is a program from Gillette that you can sent razors to recycle but I'm yet to confirm if they will accept these types of blades. If you buy the dorco blades or feather they come in a plastic pack and you put your blades in the back of it. Saves you from needing a blade bank (this is what I do and it's still not full after a few months of being into de shaving)

    • -4

I donate mine to underprivileged countries.

    • Doesn't your place also have a hole in the wall built for the purpose?

      • Nah mine has a hole in the wall built for a different purpose. Routing cables

        • Yeah, same same… Just drop your blades in there, she'll be right

    • +1

I have an old mints container, it has been years it doesn't fill they are very slim.

    • If you have access to a 3D printer, there's plenty of razor blade disposal container models available. Once it's full (which I've yet to achieve), double tape over the blade slot, chuck the whole thing out, and print a new one.

    • Stick a square strip of magnet tape to the top corner of your bathroom mirror, the razor blade in between uses can safely live stuck to it. As for disposal, a metal moneybox from the cheap shop will hold hundreds.

    • I got a cheap blade tin from AliExpress and it looks remarkably like a kid's money box with the slot in the top. Like this one but with a Superman "S" on the side because apparently I'm a big kid. At the rate that it's filling up, it should last me a decade or two.

  • Thanks OP, I've given so many of these away to friends and family so they can try DE shaving.

Will definitely stock up again :-)

    • +1

Nice. I wish people I know were receptive to it. They just look at me like I'm crazy lol.

  • Merkur is my weapon, and I'll never mess with a cheaper brand again.

Also, get the real shaving soap (with bowl) and a badger's hair shaving brush if you respect your soon-to-be-perfect skin. Walk past the synthetic fibre shaving brushes, classic example of buy cheap buy twice.

    • +1

I 100% get that but from experience wet shaving is not for everyone and there are plenty of people who have bought good razors and have not liked using it and went back to cartridges. This is a perfect way to introduce someone to wet shaving. The razor is good quality and mild which is great for a beginner. If you take the things from my list you can get a set up for under $40. If you choose to upgrade your razor the blades, cream and after shave are all still useable with your next razor. You are then only out $15 and I still use my kcg razor when I want to get it done a bit faster. The Bic blade for me are the top blades for me when it come to availability and price and the after shave is great for 99% of people even people with very sensitive skin. Cream is definitely something you can upgrade but I have used the Palmolive and it has done very very well in its price range. The other more expensive ones do a better job but are more than 2x the price. I do use proraso shave cream and other soaps and a different razor but the after shave and blades stay the same.

    • I lost my Merkur. Thought I gave it to dad but he says he doesn't have it. Might need to get this to try again.

      • there are many other options other than merkur also.

        • Probably not for $15 I imagine though right

          • @lilviss: Well there are worse ones than this but yeah if you want something that's as good or better you will need to spend 10x the amount of this one. Still merkur is expensive even then. Edwin Jagger and muhle make good affordable razors also but they are about the same unless you get a stainless steel version as they will last you even longer and are better to use when shaving.

  • The Panasonic arc 5 does wonders for me. It may not be as close to skin as a blade but it definitely does a good enough job for my Lebanese facial hair…
I never really contemplated a blade again after the electric shaver.
Maybe there will be a time where I want to go back to blade shaving but for now my 5 year old electric shaver is perfect

    • If it works for you there is no reason not to use it.

    • $449 😩

      • +1

That's the regular price. It goes on sale for half that.

  • Nice price. I did purchase this razor without the blades for around $4 a few years ago. It was in a woolies clearance.

    • I did actually see that in your post history. Unfortunately I check the clearance section every single time I go and have never seen anything like that before. Stuff is normally a few dollars off and basically not worth it. Only had luck at coles clearance section. You were very lucky

  • -2

post links everything under the sun except the styptic and bandaids you'll actually need

    • You absolutely don't need them for your first shave and that was just a starting guide. There are way too many after shave products for me to talk about. There are styptic gels, alum, alum styptic and after-shave splash (didn't link because it can cause irritation) ect. You don't need this when you first start and it's not easy to find this stuff at a supermarket or sold by Amazon au for a good price. Also any home should have band-aids anyway and the only time I have cut myself bad enough with a razor is when I first started and used a Chinese clone razor with a Chinese blade. With this razor or a good quality razor (it's about QC and design) you won't need a bandaid ever. I'm sure this is a joke but if you really feel this way you are clearly misinformed or didn't do it right when you shaved with one.

      • -1

It’s the truth I gave up and went back to a normal razor after slicing my face open too many times

Hardcore safety razor fans are like cultists they can’t believe it when people don’t want to join

        • Yep knew it. You did something wrong and call the community a cult. lol. I totally understand if you don't want to use one but doing it wrong shouldn't be a reason. Good reasons are time saving with an electric or cartridge or you are already currently having a good shave with your current equipment. If you are already not having problems with what you are doing why change

  • Got this razor handle a while ago and never going back to plastic multi carts, swapping out the blade just makes way more sense. I usually loosen it a little when I finish up to wash any bits of hair fully out and get 4-6 shaves out of each of the blades it came with so far. Keen to try better blades, sounds promising :)

    • That's great! What blades are you looking at and what shave cream and after shave stuff are you using? I might be able to help you upgrade.

    • Do some research into the Rockwell 6C or 6S razor, it allows you to change plates depending on what suits you best and the amount of growth you are trying to shave.

As a starting point the Rockwell razors above pair well with Astra Green blades.
