Anyone know if Sony "seconds" is the same as "box damaged"? Where theyre selling items at a big discount to not upset retailers?

    • +1

Not the same from my experience but you may get lucky. Happened to me once, I guess they ran out of refurbs and gave me a damaged box one instead.

    • My WF-1000XM4, bought from eBay, is listed by Sony as "box damaged."
The headphones themselves are intact, but YMMV, I guess.

    • +6

It's mostly a scheme to sell new without upsetting resellers for undercutting

      • Based on what?
Why would Sony even care about the feelings of small retailers? Sony sells to distributors.

And what's a retailer going to do - lose all Sony sales to… avoid losing some Sony sales over refurb/open box?

Nevermind the lack of explanation for why Sony would need to sell only some new units at a discount but not others when they actually reserve the right to adjust the RRP at any time, even after production has ended.

    • +3

In some cases it's actually used/returned.

      • Do any stores take returns on used headphones? I'd have thought they'd have to be returned as faulty.

        • +2

Some people use headphones, package them back in the box, reseal it and return it.

        • +3

Sony offer a 30-Day Love It Or Your Money Back Guarantee for MySony members who purchase eligible Sony products at Sony Store online.

  • It's does'nt show 213.49 (after discount) for me. Myabe targeted?

      Use ZIP payment.

      • Got it. Thank you!

  • does signing up for Zip trigger a credit check?

    • AI said (I already signed up ZIP for some ebay deals many years ago)

Yes, signing up for Zip triggers a credit check as part of its application process to assess your creditworthiness. This is different from some other "buy now, pay later" services and is a formal credit inquiry that can be visible on your credit report.

    • can confirm, its a credit check

    • Yes, its essentially the same as a credit card

  • Why do they always have refurbished units in black only, and not in white?

  • WH-1000XM5 OOS

  • Yup WH-1000XM5 OOS

  • Difference between WF and WH?

    • +3

      WF - earbuds
      WH - headphones

I would not recommend the refurb store. I purchased a pair of WF-1000XM5s that still had the previous owner's ear wax on them. They were also pretty badly scratched up and one of the charging pins was corroded. I returned them for a refund. eBay deletes negative feedback where a refund was provided so other buyers will not be aware.

My XM4 ‘seconds’ was literally in pristine condition, bought 3 years ago and still perfect, battery and all. Guess sometimes it’s pot luck

      • Same experience for me. My xm4s are like pristine condition

  • +2

    strongly recommend skipping the XM5s.
    I've had xm3, xm5 & xm6.
xm5 hinge snapped in months and sony refused refund, reddit shows its a very common flaw. I treated it like a baby due to the reviews. It quite literally separated on my head with no warning after sitting still with them on my head for a hour.
I'm also finding the xm6 doesnt hurt the top of my head after extended use.

    • My refurb WH-1000xm5 pair are 18 months old and still in great condition. YMMV.

      • What's ymmv?

        • +3

YMMV is an internet acronym for "your mileage may vary," which means a person's experience or outcome might be different from the one they are describing. It is used as a disclaimer in social media posts or comments to acknowledge that a personal opinion or recommendation may not be universally applicable.

      • Yeah I definitely think it's some sort of batch issue hey.
It's annectodal, but there's simply no way mine was from misuse, which makes me believe the 1000s of identical hinge break stories on Reddit etc.
There's also thousands saying they treated theirs roughly with no issues, so definitely varied mileage.

    • @Bidet Mate can you comment on your experience with the relative effectiveness of the noise cancelling of those different models. I have xm4 headphones and am looking at getting a second pair of noise cancelling phones and should I not get another xm4?

      • I don't have the 4s sorry.
5 and 6 definitely have better noise cancelling than the 3 for me but not relative to the price difference.
I found the 3 struggled with pressure changes after a few years use (popping and crackling when taking off/landing on flights), but to be fair to them, they endured about 6 years of very heavy use.

The 5 vs 6 anc is close enough it's hard to tell if it's placebo, but one thing is certain the 5s had far less practical automatic adjustments. It was often quite jaring when it would changes its mind about how to control the environmental sound. The 6 does it too but I never really notice it.

For sound, I was really disappointed when I got the 5, but after playing with the sound settings I got it better than the 3, however the base on the 3 was still much punchier (although muddier too).
Again, placebo may be present but I definitely feel the 6 sounds better.

I never got to test the 5 and 6 directly against each other as the 6 was a replacement, so take my info with a grain of salt.

Honestly I love the 6 and don't regret them, but if you could still buy the 3 or 4 for a good price they definitely have better value than 5 or 6. They were also built vastly better. I wore them on 3+ flights a week for years, threw them in gym and work bags directly, slept in them etc. They never saw the inside of their case for years haha. I replaced the cups around the 4 year mark and they were as good as new. I only replaced them as they developed a sound feed back issue where the ANC would freak out and play a very loud whistle anytime the cups weren't seperated, eg when you take them off and put them on your desk for the toilet. After one too many embarassing times coming back to find an angry office, along with the pressure popping getting worse, I gave them a well due retirement.

Compare that with the 5s which I genuinely think I treated better than anything I've ever owned.
The 6 feel significantly more sturdy but I'm scarred now, so they get the delicate treatment too. Going strong 6 months now.

        • Thanks for that… I've found the noise cancelling in the 4 to be good but now we need a second pair NC headphones and the writeups about 6's supposedly better NC was appealing. Ideally would like to be able to test the different NCs in the 4,5,6 range but I don't think a business would put itself out to make that possible. Anyway I'm certainly interested and will watch the prices…

          • @franek: You can test them in jbhifi. Just take your 4s in and do a side by side?

  • I dont use ZIP. Can you use the gift card method?

    • +1

Should be fine as long as its 0 balance to pay

  • I ordered the WH-1000XM4 seconds product from the seller last friday, but it still hasn't shipped yet. I'm starting to wonder if it might get canceled.

    • +1

They might ran out and waiting for more stock but not necessarily a bad thing. That happened to me once (camera) and they eventually sent out a damaged box instead (factory seal on box intact which meant item was brand new).

      • You were right. They finally got in touch to say that they had no more silver-coloured stock left, and offered me the black one instead. I expect to receive it soon.

  • Cant wait for next XM 4 ozbargain deal.
