  • Q for the hot wheels nerds: can I still find the Subaru Forester (IIRC there are two models that have been released?) in store? And is there a way to know which store so I don't have to visit 30 different locations?

Or do I have to accept paying $10-15 (+ travel) for one off marketplace?

    • +3
      1. Maybe, and no.

      2. Just buy the specific car off ebay/marketplace to save your sanity.

    • This wiki says there is a 2025 one, so maybe. It's not in the $1 range though.

$15 + reasonable travel time for something that will give you some happiness everytime you look at it on your desk sounds like a bargain imo

    • Actually there were a few premium blue Foresters left at the Burwood East store two weeks ago, but I’m sure they’re long gone by now.

    • It's always a lucky dip of what you'll get. The fun in then is wandering and seeing what's there, normally rubbish, but occasionally it's fun stuff you might like and not expect. If you just want one car definitely just buy it off marketplace.

  • I learned recently of Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt variants, that are rare versions of normal cars that have a flame logo on the car.
I had a half-hearted look for one when I was last in a Kmart but didn't find any. Not sure if I should try harder.
Wondering how hardcore the Hot Wheels collectors are, and if finding a TH version in-store is possible without planning beforehand?

hot wheels guys are hardcore. I see them hovering like seagulls when staff are putting cars onto shelves. my brother in law is a hot wheels guy, and he has a contact at his local big w who hooks him up/gives him a heads up.

i think the odds of chancing upon a rare car is low

What a way to live. Reminds me of why i burn my valuable donations.

    • +5

There's almost zero chance you'll find anything rare or valuable on the shelves. If they aren't taken by staff, or their mates, it'll be dedicated scalpers that snap everything worthwhile up as soon as they go on the shelves. Seen it myself, staff can't load shelves quick enough out of boxes as 3-4 others are grabbing them straight away.

      • +1

Yep, ruined the hobby for so many.

        Fk scalpers.

        • +1

There's a guy local to me who literally quit his job to be a fulltime scalper. Apparently his wife works for one of the department stores and has access to shipment details and he knows exactly what boxes are going where and how many boxes there are. He's insanely rude to staff when he goes in. Demands they go out the back and get the boxes he's saying are there.

    • The chances are very slim. I visit Kmarts and other places that stock Hot Wheels more than most people, but less than diehard collectors and have found a mere 3 over the course of 7+ years.

Just to clear it up, there are regular Treasure Hunts (TH) and Super Treasure Hunts. TH's I'd say are pretty common depending on the car, but STH's are what all collectors are trying to find. These have s gold flame on the card itself behind the car, spectraflame sparkly paint and Real Rider wheels.

    • Only way to definitely get at least one TH would be to buy an unopened box for yourself. There is one in each box apparently. They get snapped up really quickly

  • Confused, if I buy 5 of these they will give me 5 random cars? Risk of getting the same car multiple times?

    • probably just depends on how spiteful the picker packer is (unlikely)

    • +6

Very high. I’ve had three cars in the same lot. The pickers are lazy.

i ordered a big stack of them last year when my boys were going through a hotwheel phase, and also for them to gift to class mates (im not a fan of handing out candy for xmas gifts for kids) - and surprisingly iirc only had 1 double. Not sure if the kmart stock picker on the day just had nothing else better to do.

    • I recall buying 50 online last year. After getting home I found so many duplicates and triplicates that I returned about 35 of them. Absolute lucky dip.

  • Do i need to get more to add to the bucket of 500 we already have?

    • The more the merrier.

    Lunch sorted cheers!

My 3-year-old's first OzBargain. One of us!

  • I got a woolworths reusable bag filled with these last week from a friend who had 3 boys, who are now all in late primary/high school.

my god, curious how much she spent on them!

    • Probably about a dollar a car: a lot more if they went in hard with the playsets which generally only come with a single car.

  • Was gonna do a Pricematch Target like last year but i guess they removed Target Toy Price Guarantee
