  • I'm getting - transaction declined

    • How are you checking out on the Giftz website?

I find some payment methods do not work on Giftz. For example:

      • Coles/Vanilla Mastercard gift cards have never worked directly.

      • Coles/Vanilla Mastercard gift cards used to work via PayPal, but that stopped working a couple of months ago for me.

      • I once accidentally tried to use a Westpac credit card via PayPal, but it was declined. Thank goodness it was declined, otherwise Westpac probably would have treated it as a cash advance. (The MCC for Giftz via PayPal should still be MCC 6012, which is something that most credit card providers would treat as a cash advance.)

      • If payment is being treated as a cash advance, then that's a big fat no from me to this deal.

(And yes, I know it's up to the card issuer re how to treat the transaction.)

        • That is only if you are using a credit card via PayPal.

If you pay directly (by entering your card details into checkout) or pay via Apple Pay or Google Pay, it should be assigned MCC 5947 (which is a lot less likely to be flagged as a cash advance by a credit card issuer).

      • Oh shoot just ordered and paid with a WP CC via Paypal before seeing your comment! Transaction went through, fingers crossed not treated as cash advance (will report back).

      • I just checked - used Amex card with PayPal previously and there was no cash advance fees. I did it again today, pending transaction also shows no cash advance fees. So this might be to do with Visa or MC. In case this helps someone.

      • The C/V Mastercards can now be added to PayPal again, and I have used them successfully for this deal. It is changing all the time so no harm trying considering we probably all have a bunch atm.
If you still can't add them, it is probably your PayPal account being subjected to the BIN-based cool-down like Shopback, but I think that is very unlikely since they could not be added for a long time.

        • Lucky you.

Late last night, I linked a Coles Mastercard gift card to PayPal, then tried to check out on the Giftz website via PayPal. PayPal was able to charge my Coles Mastercard gift card and I got a PayPal email saying I authorised a $180 payment to Giftz, but then when I tried to finalise the transaction on Giftz, I got a transaction declined - contact your bank message on the Giftz checkout page. Now I think about it, this probably sounds like a Giftz problem.

          • @WookieMonster: Interesting, sounds like Giftz isn't happy about your account lol. Blackhawk is still a lot less elusive than TCN when it comes to fraud detection; most of the time it still works.

    • I’m also getting transaction declined - contact your bank :’)
Have tried with Westpac and Commbank CCs including via PayPal. Then tried via Commbank debit and still no dice. I give up.

  • How does this differ to the Restaurant Choice gift card?

    • want to know as well

    • These companies are introducing new cards with more restrictions on places where they can be used. The Restaurant choice is the mother of all and the TCN Good Food is the worst.

    • No difference in my experience, same merchant codes. Just branding.

Terms on giftz are the same also.

The Café Choice Gift Card can be used at the following merchant category locations: Eating Places and Restaurants (5812), Hotels, Caterers (5811), Drinking Places (Alcoholic Beverages), Bars, Taverns, Cocktail lounges, Nightclubs and Discotheques (5813) Fast Food Restaurants (5814) Motels & Resorts, Central Merchant (7011), Amusement Parks, Circuses, Carnivals, and Fortune Tellers (7996). The Merchant Category Code (MCC) identifies the type of service a business provides. If the MCC listed above does not match the retailer’s category, then the transaction will decline.

I have also used both Cafe & Rest Choice cards at Bakeries (MCC 5462). Baker's Delight and a local gourmet bakery.

  • Bought two, thanks OP.

  • Can you add these cards to your Apple/Google pay?

    • Yep, got to add them in manually. No add to wallet feature like TCN cards has via their app.

To use your Café Choice eGift card instore, add your eGift to your mobile wallet, and tap your phone at the terminal when making a purchase instore.

  • For anyone in Brisbane heading to the cricket this weekend, I can confirm these work at the Gabba (also Suncorp too).

    • worked earlier this year at the Gabba when buying overpriced and over salted chips

      • Yes I too was victim to this. It also works for for over priced but still refreshing drinks.

        • they make it extra salty so they want you to buy a drink…very smart of them

  • last time was $300 when can we get $500 ones again

    • Missing this $1000 denom. deal which sold out in less than hour. Ever since they have been $200-$300 denoms only. The last $500 was at Coles, but over 5 ago months now.

      • With the cost of eating out these days and surcharges, the lower denominations should be cancelled, as they are pretty useless.

  • As always - transaction declined for no reason

    • I got declined using both Google Pay and when entering a credit card directly.

Disconnected from WiFi and then it worked using the same credit card. So if you can change IP address give it a try

  • Effort constantly checking balance and not being able to use the entire balance = not worth it imo

    • Given average dining for 2-3 ppl easily cost $100, it’s not that difficult to see roughly how much $ left from the mobile wallet recent activity screen.

    • I usually spend the remaining at McDonald's. They have 50c items that you can add on to fill up the card and they don't add a silly little % for credit cards.

    • Starbucks app lets you do $10+ with cents so if you don't mind some Starbucks it's a good way to get rid of the balance

  • How to easily use remaining couple of dollars/cents on card?

    • KFC and Grill'd can split transactions in store. YMMV on encounters with power tripping staff who refuse or staff who don't know how to split the transaction though.

    • Ask a fortune teller (7996) ?

    • Gyg, you can minus the remaining with gyg dollar to use the rest, quick and easy

      • can you help to further elaborate on this?
does this mean we can exchange custom amount to gyg dollar from the app?

        • Let's say you have 20 GYG rewards dollars, the burrito costs $14.90, this GC remaining balance $2.90, you can customise the GYG rewards dollars to use only 12 GYG rewards dollars and then pay the rest with this GC(either integrated into apple pay or directly)

    • RR also allows split card payment if there's one near you.

  • Can be used at Inglewood for coffee beans?

    • Very likely not. Cassiopeia cofee beans in Springwood was one of 2 odd places where this card was declined.

    • No, you can use the category choice grocery card or the 711 card for that via Paypal. If you do it directly, it is 5999 and there is no obtainable card with that MCC allowed.

  • Thanks. Ordered successfully.

  • Can we use coles mastercard for this?

    • As above, GC guru WM reckons no. Try linking to PayPal first and try if it works.

  • Have been eagerly waiting for a discount on TCN Restaurant/Restaurant Choice with holiday season coming up, but this works too! Thanks OP!

  • tried adding Coles $250 to Paypal and didn't work, paid with Amex finally

  • Coles mastercard worked for me via paypal.

    • same, didn't work initially but tried again using incognito tab and went thru fine

  • Do we know if we can only add in either an apple or google wallet?

I added in Apple and that worked. Fails in google on multiple attempts.

I have two phone and hence the need.

    • i think these cards now have some restriction in adding to multiple phones (or even wallets)…I think once it is added somewhere it is registered and does not allow you to register on another phone until you remove it from the wallet

I wonder if there is a way this info is sent back to the issuer network when the card is removed from the phone

@WookieMonster probably can give more tech details/confirm my understanding

      • Yes, you can add it to another phone after removing it.

It wasn't always like this. I used to be able to add it to multiple devices.

        • Yep. Worked. So only one wallet allowed.

          Thank you

        • Just checking, removing from old wallet (phone) and it allows it to be added reasonably straight away to the second wallet (phone)?

          • @sicarz: @sicarz That is correct.

            • @djsydney: Sweet. I'll do that. Too many phone swaps lately, so was getting annoying!

      • Yeah it seems blackhawk has recently added this restriction to all their cards. Same goes to the Activ, various category choice cards, 711 cards and shell cards.

  • Anyone having the same issue? Successfully added the first card to Apple wallet, but second card comes up with "Your Issuer Does Not Yet Offer Support for This Card"

    • I believe theres a time limit on Apple devices as to how many cards you can add a day with Blackhawk Network cards, I got fed up and bought another phone that I can use Google Pay on a few weeks ago and haven't had an issue since.

    • It is the sign to buy a cheap Samsung phone with Samsung wallet support :)
Yes not just any Android phone but a Samsung phone. Blackhawk can ban your Google wallet if you add an obscene amount of cards (I think around 500~1000, not exactly sure as I've never counted) and you still have Samsung wallet as the backup option before getting rid of it.
Plus you can easily track your card balance inside Samsung wallet with numerical notes.

  • 2nd order not going through and I used another email. Enough for me to use until next colesworths deal. Thanks.

  • Is it instant , I can't find emails or no text

  • Purchased successfully first time on Amex but declined on second attempt. Both payment's showing on my Amex account though.

    • The second will cancel itself off at some point.

I have never had issues with them in such a scenario in the past.

      • Good to know. I received a transaction declined message on the website but can see the pending transaction for the amount on my Amex. Not being able to customer service certainly didn't help!

  • Has anyone tested these with eat club? Can you use these as payment method?

    • Restaurant choice works, so would think this works too given its accepted at the same MCCs

    • Yes 100% works
