My first mechanical watch. Pairing it with the Uncle beads of rice at the moment. Highly recommend for first watch

    • +1

      Uncle beads of rice

impeccable taste bro - wish i could splash that much cash haha

      • +1

        Yes very nice pairing!

      • +2

I'm Asian. I asked my wife for some money for rice, it's an instant approval

        • I’m Asian but my wife is white! Help please

    • +1

Was planning on getting the same bracelet. Did you just go for the Sarb017 version of the beads of rice bracelet? I don’t think they have a spb version.

      • Great choice.
Yep I went for the Sarb017 version. It took a bit of time and effort to put it on the Spb121j but it will fit 100%

  • +6

Pretty sure starbuy has had it at a similar price for a while now, and this is also the old model of the alpinist, new ones just got released over the last couple months and are already available in aus

    • +3

And cost about $1500 I think. This is still a deal at this price as the new movement is pretty much identical but bumps the power reserve from 70hrs to 72hours and that's about it. Unless you're really into the new teal dial (which I kind of am) there's not much to justify 2x the price of this puppy.

      • +2

Retail is around $1400, and I picked mine up for about $1000 from an authorised seller. The 6R55 model is also slimmer, has better finishing, harder coating, and proper Alpinist branding. So at ~$1000 it’s easily justified over the older one. But yeah would never pay RRP.

      • +2

Exactly, it's stuff all difference and essentially the same watch. It's funny how people think a new movement is night and day and prepared to pay way more for 1-2h power reserve.

Always aim for 750$ for the alpinist.

        • Aiming for $750 makes sense for the older Alpinists, but the 507 actually retails higher. It literally came out about a month ago, while this one’s around 5 years old. Different release cycles, different brackets, different expectations.

A 50% markdown on a brand new slimmer model is never happening, but 20% off is exactly what you can realistically snag, which is why its a solid pick up.

          • +1

@shootermitch: Yeah have to wait a while for good sales on new releases. Although not long for some buy 30-40% off is what you want.

Depends how long you want to wait but may not matter if you plan on keeping it forever.

          • @shootermitch: It's a Seiko. Expect it to go down

    • Correct, should expect slightly better clearance pricing as the new models roll out if people hold off purchasing now (new model dial is prettier with alpinist text imo).
Still a decent price, I recently bought the SPB532J1 from Malaysia for almost $1500, otherwise I'd probably buy one of these.

  • Kinda looks like a rip of the Alpina watches, looks quite nice though

    • +3

      Seiko Prospex Alpinist

      • I meant the Alpina brand of watches… never mind. Thanks

        • +1

We know what you meant. When you know you know :)

    • +1

The alpina was probs inspired by seiko

  • +2

Always wanted this. Can't justify the price. Need to feed the family !

    • +2

Milifortic on AliExpress have done a pretty faithful homage… still about $300 for the knock off though.

Will your life be any better by paying $1000 for a 50 dollar watch with an expensive tag on it?

      • plenty of people appreciate the value of a brand name .. what car do you drive?

        • Just sold a ford ranger, getting a ford Everest. Need towing for family holidays/farm gear, 4wding for my weekends and the seat space. I'm also a freak of nature and can't see traffic lights without ducking in anything but the Ford's generous headroom. But a car is not even remotely comparable to piece of jewellery where the utility stops at saphire glass, which even then is a rip as an easy diy saphire is like $10.

          • @lew380: JAC T9 is about 15% cheaper and 7yr unlimited km warranty .. but yea, like the majority of the world, I'm happy to pay more a brand name.

            • @matt-ozb: Reliability and resale. Look at the t90's. Were 10k less than the Rangers new but are now 20k less second hand. No one wants the parts and reliability woes. If your watch breaks down, you aren't going to have to sit on the side of a dirt track for 3 days.

      • How is this a $50 watch..

  • +2

Have had one of these Alpinists for years and it is low key my favourite watch (out of a collection that includes a Longines Hydroconquest and Spirit Zulu Time). That being said, Starbuy has definitely had it for sub $700 before.

    • Agreed, but this is the best price now that I can see. Prossibly go cheaper on Boxing Day if they have any left.

  • The SARB017 looked better and was so much cheaper. IMO Casio, Orient, Citizen and Aliexpress is where it's at these days. I'm through with Seiko

  • I've seen cheaper, I don't think forking out ~800$ for the green alpinist is a good deal honestly

    • +1

OzzyB post link or it didn't happen! ;-p

Feel free to suggest other $800 pieces that people may be interested in.

      • https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/603560, sub 700 is reasonable. Plenty comments above saying that it has been better priced in the past mate. Can definitely wait until boxing day to see if price fall again (only 20 days).

        • +2

Sure… That's in FEB 2021 dollars though. Doubt it'll go that cheap again, but if you're not interested, or want to gamble with a wait and see, that's fine too.

  • +1

Sold my green one cause I preferred the champagne face alpinist. No regrets. The green isn't as nice as I thought it would be.

I guess this would be somewhat of a collector's version now that the new version is coming out (SPB507).

  • I have been eyeing the pogue, and they have been dropping the price by $1 to outdo each other lol. At the moment Linda is leading at $737 https://lindajewellers.com/product/seiko_prospex_pogue_speed…

  • Someone gifted me this:

    https://watchfactory.com.au/products/1513854

Any opinion on this watch ?

    • +2

Why worry about other people's opinions if it was a gift, or do you not know much about watches?

If that's the case then Hugo Boss are fashion watches & that price is crazy when compared to the Citizen Eco-Drive (solar) in this post.

      • +1

I honestly shouldn’t have looked up the price. I got curious and it surprised me more than I expected, which is why I asked. I don’t know a ton about watches.

        • +1

I doubt whoever gifted it to you paid that much, but even half that price is still too much when you compare it to what you can buy from reputable watch making brands like Citizen, Seiko, Orient & Casio.

Anyway if you like it then who cares.

        • $600 is for the logo only.

    • Fashion brand watches are notoriously crap. Huge Boss, Armani Exchange, Tommy Hilfiger etc. It's crappy hardware with the price being for the name only.

    • It's a quartz movement so it's not worth much money and isn't collectable because it's mass produced.
The styling is a little gauche but if you like it then don't worry about just enjoy it.

      • @xavster nothing wrong with quartz movements, they keep better time and I'm actually tending to buy less automatics these days. Great to have a good few grab and go pieces.

Generally it's good to avoid fashion brand watches. They don't have the history or quality and usually bad value. That one is nice looking and if it's a gift then what do you do (but enjoy it). Most people's first watch would be a fashion brand. You can get quartz Tissots for a bit more on special which would be the go for example.

Even a lot of AliExpress copycat watches are great quality these days, just have to stick to the known brands.

  • Question for all… what's the cheapest watch/best deal with the 6R35 you've seen?

    • +1

This one at the moment… I think.

      • +1

Got one for $764.10 last week from Shiels - was the cheapest I'd seen ever so picked it up, this is still a great deal

    • I got a second hand SPB147j off eBay for about $700, it was as new in the box with papers and zero scratches or other defects.

      I don’t think I’ll buy another watch, unless it’s a sub.

  • Where would one get something like the SSC937?

  • Why did they have to put a cyclops on this? I’ll just keep waiting for the GMT version.

    • So you can see the lume application on the seconds hand, of course! I agree though, totally unnecessary.

    • yeah…not a big fan of the cyclops.

    • The 1995 alpinist had a cyclops too…

    • It suits some watches, I like it on this.
You can actually read the date as well.
It's possible to remove it yourself but then the date looks funny. They should just do a no date on more watches.

    • You can remove the cyclops from it. It's glued on.

  • Ordered a watch on Monday but still not shipped :-(

    • That's very unlike Starbuy. They usually ship really quickly.

      • I know right? It's actually just been shipped so maybe I will get it on Monday. Which is unfortunate as i thought it would've been here by Wednesday this week. I guess they probably had a few more orders than usual being Black Friday sales.

        • Damn. They're usually shipped express. Maybe you'll get lucky and they'll deliver on Saturday? Don't Auspost do Saturday deliveries closer to Christmas, or am I imagining things?

Have to admit I've stopped looking at emails from them, so haven't kept up with their sales. Too broke for watch collecting. 😢

        • Ordered on Wednesday and hasn't shipped, looks like it won't ship till next week going by your timeline. Last time I ordered a Seiko Arnie from them it shipped the same day.

    • +3

Hi there. We are running behind at the moment unfortunately due to the Black Friday orders. We will be up to date from Tuesday as we will all be in the warehouse this weekend to catch up. Thanks

      • Hey I received my order this evening but noticed that it came unstrapped in the box and without the usual Seiko warranty & instructions papers. Is this right?

Auspost also just chucked it over the fence and didn't knock for a signature or anything.

  • Love the Alpinist! Good deal

  • not a watch nerd and this watch is cool,. this year i have been wearing this the most, i actually got compliments from strangers on it.

  • I lost an original sarb alpinist on a big night out once. Still filthy

    • Ouch… That sucks!

  • +1

Besides cheap surf watches when I was a teenager. The green SARB017 (green). And more recently the SPB489J (red aussie limited edition). They are the only two proper watches I have ever owned. They are great size especially if you have fairly skinny arms. Terrible strap though.

  • This is a very nice watch, saw it today. Looks nicer than most rolex imo

    • That my preferred colourway, and in the 'baby alpinist '

      • yea .. 39.5mm is too small for me .. so no alpinist for me

  • -1

a daily time tolerance of +25 / -15 seconds per day

    • This again lol. You'd be unlucky to get one that bad or out of spec. Easy to adjust to exchange anyway. Better yet get a quartz.

      • -2

It is not my watch, it is the official specs from Seiko!!.

After reading the specs I was surprised how poor accuracy it offers.
In particular when a cheapo quartz wins hands down ..

        • +1

Welcome to mechanical watches. Quartz will win in accuracy every day. If you're not into the feel of the engineering that goes into springs and cogs then you're right - not for you.

          • -1

            @nitens:

            Welcome to mechanical watches.

            Not all of them.
Rolex (and probably many many others) offer very high precision mechanical watches with only 2 or 1 seconds variation. Then resting the watch overnight in a position or another will get (more or less) back on time.

Still my comment remains: what is the point of this Seiko wrist watch so inaccurate?. OK for a fashion item but not for a "watch" to give you the time … all the time.

Not trying to offend nor belittle anyone, just stating my point of view.

            • @LFO: Lol get a Rolly then?
How many people hanging out on Ozbargain are in the market for one of those you think. Fair not more expensive haha.

It's very easy to adjust periodically, even most quartz will need adjustment after a few months (if you can be bothered).

            • @LFO: 2 or 1 seconds per day on the rolex, yeah? Most reasonable quartz are about 15 sec/month, with high precision going out to around 5-10 seconds a year. This is impossible with a mechanical. I have had tonnes of mech watches with reported accuracy windows like this seiko movement that are running around the +/- 2 to 3 seconds a day that cost way less than a rolex.

So I think you may want to check your facts as there is no room for points of view when dealing with the numbers.

        • No point worrying yourself about it then, if you aren't even intending on getting one 🙄.

          • @G-Shock:

            worrying yourself

            LOL
I am not worrying at all, I am doing a copy_and_paste of Seiko's specification for this watch. Probably for potential buyers to be aware of.

Again, not trying to offend nor belittle anyone, just stating what I read on the specs.

            • @LFO: Ok mate sounds like it's not for you (and see above). I'm sure you look at your phone and not comment on all these deals.

              • @G-Shock: Why not?

Why I cannot comment on factual specifications?

                • @LFO: Sure.

You'll have to make up your own mind though.

                • @LFO: You can… Context is important though. If it were coming from a place of this movement offers far worse performance than most other similarly (or cheaper) priced mechanical movements then it'd be valuable. However, just shouting it out without understanding that this is aorund the stated performance of most mechanical movements until you're looking at watches with prices about 5x this one makes your facts meaningless and you opinions valueless.

                • @LFO: You absolutely can, but I'm going to hazard a guess that the consensus here is that people don't wear expensive watches to (accurately) tell the time; it's jewellery. It's not always about buying crap we don't need to appear rich in the eyes of strangers who don't care about us. There's a catharsis in rewarding your own hard work.
We're too quick to punish our failures and losses without acknowledging our strengths and successes. A watch can be symbolic of the time you spent on your journey. Maybe you'd like to hand that down to your offspring some day.
When you're a billionaire you can go full circle back to an Apple watch because you don't need to appear rich, and prioritize features like a heart-monitor, as more time is something money can't buy.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

                  • @BoltThrower: They are still useful and convenient for telling the time regardless of budget, but most people are glued to their phones anyway, so whatever works. Not purely jewellery:P

Old mate should just get an F91W and he won't be disappointed, but in reality we all know that the accuracy is better than the movement's maximum specs (and send back if it's too bad).

PS. Moay smart watches are annoying with notifications and having to charge daily as well as your phone).

  • Gay deal! I'm devo'd tho. Pulled the trigger 3 weeks ago at ~900 (minus a gift card) after waiting (delaying the impulse) for years. Sigh, can't have it all I guess

    • 😘

    • Fmd *great deal. Read my notifications for no real reason and learnt 1. autocorrect tryna get me cancelled and 2. I'm having old people issues with technology.

  • Save your money and get the new one which is better in every way plus new colours

    • -1

And a lot more expensive for basically the same thing.
Funny how people go ape shit for a slightly tweaked movement with an extra 1-2h power reserve. When theirs get superseded it will be a different story.
