Who are you?! and what have you done with the real marshmall0w2?!?!

      • Got kidnapped hence why buying this

These cameras have a light on them when they're active, I guess the firmware can be hacked.

I think the thing is, don't use them unless you're okay for the feed to be hacked. E.g. when away.

I guess the only thing is sophisticated thieves could track when you are away - they'd have to know a lot about you to do so.

I would never place them in a child's room.

      • +1

        Can turn the light off.

      • Literally any camera can be "hacked" if they can get hold of your account credentials.
As far as I'm aware, this has never happened with Tapo cameras.
And you can turn the light off. You can enable/disable many of the features.

Why would these be more risk to any other camera? They are not just an unknown company.

    • -1

Don't you just need to set a good wifi password?

      • -4

        Solves nothing.

        • -4

Dear Clowns that voted me down, it does solve nothing. Voting me down doesn’t change that.

Any good way to run these locally at home, without paying for their subscription?

    • +1

Yes can save to local SD card and review that way. Or use the local storage hub (buy it) or use home assistant smarts to save to central storage but that's quite a big job.

      • +1

Yes but if you do embarrassing things like smoothing with your stuffed toy, the thief can now blackmail you when they steal your camera with the sd card.

I have the Swann version of the 2k tilt and pan and I always delete local storage and leave it on cloud storage.

That's why actual security systems, aside from saving to the cloud, save to disk in a server/storage room that's key and locked.

    • +1

Yeah they have onvif feeds so you can store the video on your nvr.
It'll also work with the tapo hub if you don't want to store on micro SD cards in each camera.

I have quite a few of these cameras

    • I just run them for monitoring, along with plugs, sensors etc. No cost. Can run SD card if want recording functionality as someone else mentioned.

    • You only need to subscribe if you want cloud storage. All features work in local mode.

  • +1

It says its not water resistant but I've had one of mine outside for a few months now and it's still going not too fussed if it does die as they're this cheap.

Add an SD card and you've got a decent camera you can place anywhere.

  • Only 1080p :(

    • +24

      Buy 4 = 4k

      • This is what I did with TVs.

  • Got different cameras any way to have on one app ?

    • Nvr

    • +1

      Yeah nvr.

      Tapo camera have onvif.

      • Would it be worthwhile buying an NVR box from AliExpress for setting$50, or just run it using an old laptop/desktop?

        • +1

Nvr is always going to be simpler.

To run those software nvr on laptop it actually requires a decent processing power.

It'll chew more power from a laptop or pc i'd think

          • @edrift: Thanks!

          • @edrift: any recommendations for a low-cost NVR?
I just got 2 Reolinks cameras, and get their recordings saved to an FTP server.

            Thanks

            • +1

@Averell: Would like to know this too. A quick AliExpress search showed a LOT of options, but unsure of the quality of some of those

    • Frigate

  • Is it battery operated ? Can it record continuously or only when there is a movement ?

    • +2

      Cable. Can record continuously

      • Thanks

      • -2

No, it streams continuously, but does not record unless there is an "event"

    • Can do motion and/or continuous record.
I.e. both at the same time via onvif and local or hub storage

      • Thanks

  • I believe these (C200 v5) should be flashable with 3rd party firmware (ie. Thingino), but it requires disassembly to either program directly with nand flasher, or a little soldering to access uart. (Test pads + pads aren't connected and need a little solder to bridge a gap where they omitted 0 ohm resistors.)

Somewhat of an effort to fully distance yourself from their cloud, but available if you're the adventurous type.

    • I believe you could also do some IP blocking on your router if you're comfortable with that.

  • -4

1080p with the distance to see your face or number plate. They can just take your camera and sd card then blackmail you like the previous post said. Only use it without local storage to watch your pet. It is not a security camera

    • Hey bud, this is an indoor camera.

If you're worried about someone nicking the SD card and not a stranger in your home you might have your priorities a bit mixed up

  • How hard are these to setup with Home Assistant?

    • Easy add with tp link credentials, does not pass through events or anything really extra. Can turn on and off some options and use pan

      • Thanks - out of curiosity, do you know a really good option to you with HA that is wifi but powered?

        • Huh? you asking for a recommendation for a camera with HA compat, mains powered and wifi connection. I really only use C210s and C120s. The 120 is much higher quality, 2k. starlight sensor with colour night vision etc. No pan/tilt. Both same options in HA, I assume there would be some HACS integrations to get more options for tplink cams

          • @subaruwrt: I think the C120s is what I'm after. Currently using Eufy cams, and finding them way too laggy.

            • @RangaWal: The problem isn't Eufy. It's WiFi

If you're a HA user then you're able to run an ethernet cable to a camera - even if you're renting.

Takes half a day to do right, or an hour if you run it across the floor and under carpets. You'll never have laggy or poor quality video ever again

              • @String name: I don't want to run ugly conduit down the house, then ethernet through the wall, across the ceiling, down through another wall, into a router.

  • +1
  • Bought one then realised the livestream doesn't work with Google Home.
You have to use the tplink app to see livestream.
You can't share a livestream link with others etc.

Is there any indoor cam that will stream to Google Home or can be viewed from Google Home or Apple Home app?

  • Available again (still at eBay too).

  • This C200 is compatible with Thingino - open source firmware for cameras based on Ingenic SoC chip.
I'm now porting Ezviz CS-C6N one to Thingino. Getting root shell is hard, but necessary for getting GPIO map :)
Not an issue for TP-Link C200 - it is on the list of supported cameras.
