Isn't it cheaper to buy Qantas wine?

  • Irony is that it takes $2730 to get 160000 points. But if you want to cash out 160000 points, you get
    1. $550 mastercard gift card and you are left with 3900 points. Or
    2. $975 apple gift card and you are left with 1500 points (20% off for the apple gift cards at the moment)

Still might be cheaper to buy points and book a flight then make a direct booking using cash/card. YMMV depending on location and availability of reward flights

    • +4

Using Qantas points to buy gift cards is usually the worst value.

    • +1

Absolutely, but I think people believe they get higher value from using points for things they wouldn't otherwise buy, like business class seats. Qantas flight rewards often require additional taxes which are pretty close to what someone can pay for economy sale fares (obviously on different airlines). I personally can't justify spending cash or points to buy exorbitantly priced fares for a bit more comfort on a flight lasting only 24 hours. Way better to enjoy a nice hotel at your destination, but hey, to each their own. Not sure why your comment got negged, unless people don't like their "correct opinions" challenged. ;)

      • The thing with points is that you can usually book a ticket sometimes under 24hr notice compared to paying 4 or 5k with no points and thats what i usually use my points for. Ive also seen first class to middle east for 110k points + $1000 in taxes and thats usually a 15k+ booking

        • Nice. I'll file that away - excellent use of points, and an excellent point on use (of points) :)

          • @jrvb42: Yeah. Thats the only reason im sitting on 700k+ points from qantas and virgin.

Booked 3 last minute flights this year and saved 10s of thousands (XX000 points with a few hundred taxes (short transit time) compared to $5k+ on booking sites)

Im tempted to buy some qff from this deal to topup.

No-one with a mind to chase bargains would spend Qantas points on anything other than classic rewards flights or upgrades, I reckon. In that event you could theoretically get roughly $4000 worth of domestic business or economy international flights for that 160000 points.

This is a great deal if you have little to no points and plan on booking business class flights with QF.
For example.. Melbourne > Dallas -Business Classic Reward is 151,800 points + approx $700 in taxes
This would cost you $2730 in real money to buy 160k points with this offer (+ taxes)
It's impossible to buy a one way ticket on this route in Business at this price.
Obviously you'd need to find availability with a Classic Reward seat.

    • Available for 24December. An extra long christmas eve flight arriving on same day 😀

  • How does this compare to buying points through other means?

    • +4

Check ozbargain classified. Currently selling at approx. 1.2c - 1.3c per point. But these are against the Terms and conditions of QFF. They can block your account and you lose all your points if they take action

    What a waste of money

What can you even use Qantas points for now reliably? A Qantas domestic classic award or classic plus for basically anything else

    • +1

Used them a few weeks ago at Classic award level to book to 2 Business Class flights to Europe and back for late next year.

      • That's lucky of u. What routes if you don't mind me asking?
With Emirates? I feel their fees cost more than purchasing tickets directly~~

        • +2

There’s plenty of availability for Paris-Perth direct right now in business. $2700 to buy points vs >$10000 in cash.

          • +2

@jsjc: $2700 each way to buy the points PLUS over $1000 in fees and only available in Feb/March with crappy weather.

Is that really an amazing deal?

            • +1

@dantrax77: Exactly, sure there's availability when no one else wants to fly, but what's the point in that

Singapore airlines meanwhile has great premium availability all year round, you can still get reward flights in bizniz to Singapore and Hong Kong for CNY-26

            • +1

@dantrax77: I mean each to their own. I’m flying the family to Europe in this time period so have managed to get 4x business classic rewards fares. I didn’t have to buy points, but if I did then the total cost with this deal wouldn’t have been far off buying cash economy fares, so worthwhile for me.

If you can’t find a flight that’s useful, just don’t buy the points 🤷 I don’t think anyone is recommending to stockpile them for later use

        • It wasnt with Emirates and their high taxes and it was for September/October next year for 2 people in Business class return.

    • +1

Nah you just got to look for them, my wife and I absolutely burnt through points the last year or so (all for 2 people):
      - QF business to HK, return in premium economy
      - JL first to Tokyo, return in business
      - CX business return to Seoul

      Already booked for next year
      - JL business return to Tokyo
      - QF business return to HK

As an example the first class classic reward to Tokyo is about 155k points, I can buy that using the above with $2860. That’s way less than what the ticket value is in cash.

To be fair the last 5 trips I've found business or first seats. Good to be flexible and I guess lucky

  • You could earn this amount pretty easily with 2-3 credit card sign up bonuses in 6 months for $500 or so.

While I appreciate this is the super lazy option, the value is really, really poor if you're actually looking for a bargain.

    • +2

24 month cooldowns it's so much harder than it used to be

  • +1

You'll need it when they reduce the buying power of points again in 2026,guaranteed

  • Do these go towards Points Club earn?

    • +1

Yep all top up points purchases are counted towards PC and PC plus

  • Just get a credit card
