Steelcase Australia has reduced the Leap chair to their usual discount of $1175.30 on Amazon. currently Amazon has a 15% High Performance Egonomic Seating coupon that you can claim to reduce the price to $999. It is being shipped by Amazon, so I'm guessing that it should be trouble free to return if you are not satisfied. Only 1 colour is available "Licorice", but it looks black to me.

Been looking to purchase the Steelcase Leap, but being out in WA it is rather expensive as the only reseller is designfarm and haven't seen any discounts at all.

  • Interested but how does one go about returning a chair to Amazon?

    • Attach to back of Amazon van with a rope

    • The return process is easy (chatbot to person to get a return label generated).
The hard part is finding a big enough box to ship it back in, fully assembled.

Or you could just stick a label on it and let the post office deal with it 🤣

      • Just keep the packaging it turns up in for a little while, and only chuck it out once you're happy you'll keep the chair

    • Interested but how does one go about returning a chair to Amazon?

      Chair lift?

    • An item i purchased from Amazon wouldn't get accepted by Australia Post because of its size so i cut it up into several pieces using a drop saw and they accepted it.

  • Great price for great chair.

    • Better deal than throwing cash at Herman Miller if the Leap suits you, but this chair is probably worth $700 in a competitive market. This is also assuming that it's a Leap v2.

      • Slim chance it’s a V1. V2 was released in 2006.

      • I don't know about Herman Millers, but the Leap v2 is actually a comfortable chair.

I'm typing now, while sitting on one :-)

  • Great price and a great chair! Mine has been going strong for 4 years with daily use, worth every penny. The only issue I’ve noticed is that the grey/silver color tends to darken over time.

    • Noob question: Have you tried any other chairs to compare this one mate?

I developed a lower back pain using cheap Officeworks chair and doing long sittings. My colleague advices me to buy Secret Labs chair for $800.

Would highly appreciate kind advice pls

      • I have the Steelcase Gesture and my sister has a Secret Labs chair. I thoroughly do not recommend a Secret Labs chair.

        • SecretLabs style "racer" gaming chairs are my personal pet hate.

I'm a "gamer" but I work an office job. There's a difference between 2-4 hours in a chair for a gaming session, and 8-10 hours in a chair 5 days a week. My well endowed butt needs the support that only a "real" office chair can provide. Although bloody hell I hate having to pay for the privilege.

Although moving to a WFH job means the numbers in the chair means I can probably make an argument for one of gel pools they used in Minority Report as its probably the only thing rated for this many hours of daily use!

          • @Intoxicoligist: yeah same, I am a gamer, but those neon throne just doesn't fit ;)

            • @twain90: "I'm not cornering fast enough to need side bolsters in my desk chair!"
              - Intox, Last Place, 2025 Chair Race

        • Totally agree on the secret labs chair.
I had one a few years ago, after a few months I developed lower back pain… I was in my 20s….
I gave it to a family member, and I ended up getting a RH Mereo 300 after a lot of research, I love it to bits, I have not suffered any aches or pains since.

      • This chair is considered far superior to a secret lab type gamer chair. However its really hard to judge until you actually use it. If it were me i would choose this over secret labs. Might not be a bad idea to consult your physio also thry may have recommendations suited to your needs.

      • Gamer chars like the Secret Labs are comfy but they aren't necessarily good for you. I hear they're built like shit but no perosnal experience.

I use a Herman Miller Aeron at home for many years which is considered the gold standard and I don't love it.

I like the Steelcase Leap a lot but haven't used it for extended periods. I'd consider getting one if I was looking for a good chair right now.

      • Don't buy the secret lab chair unless you like hard seat cushions. I found them hard and uncomfortable to sit in for more than an hour and the armrests slipped around too easily when I pushed down on them when adjusting my seating position.

Switched back to my old chair and sold this a few months after getting it. Wouldn't touch Secret Lab again.

No idea about this chair though, I've heard good things - but then again I'd heard good things about Secret Lab 🥲

      • Yes, plenty actually. I sit about 14 hours per day (mostly WFH and leisure). Personally, I’d advise against gaming chairs. I used a SecretLab and a DXRacer way back during COVID, my back didn’t like them. But again, that was a while ago. Those chairs are nice for aesthetic reasons though.

I’ve tried the Steelcase Series 1 and Series 2 (my wife is currently using the Series 2—the pink version, cute as heck). I sold the Series 1 and have now settled with the Leap. Don’t think I’ll go back to a gaming chair anytime soon :D

      • Moved interstate and left my leap chair at home few years back, ever since then Ive been wishing I brought it with me. Nothing has ever come close to the leap for me, I got it pre-covid when prices weren't as ridiculous as they are now.

I settled on a Sihoo M57 Ergonomic Office Chair as the reviews said it was an ergonomic chair and was on sale at the time. Sure I cant compare apples and oranges, although its not even anything close in my opinion. I cant sit longer than an hour without being uncomfortable and get odd aches in this Sihoo chair.

I bought the leap back then because I was studying from home and also working full time from home, it was great, I went from an officeworks gaming chair for $110 to this rolls royce. My back started to feel better, the 4D arm rests are a game changer for comfort too.

Decided with this sale Im just gna buy it again.

I tried various different officeworks chairs 300-600 range and they didn't quiet feel the same when sitting in them even for a short period 5-10 mins; can't say Ive tried many different chairs although the leap is the OG

      • This is a much nicer chair than secret labs. However, chair is a very personal thing. It would be a good idea if you can get an opportunity to try it first. Further, you need good sitting habits. Even the best chair in the world would not prevent you from getting lower back pain otherwise. I'd recommend seeing a medical professional.

      • I try and avoid gamer related peripherals. Just pay more for the logo.

I've got a Leap v2 and it's pretty good and comfy. I found the Herman Miller Aeron seat too hard but it does have better ventilation.

      • oh wow…you guys are very helpful. Thanks very much to everyone who replied.
        upvoted.

      • Just my 2cents. I bought a Secretlab titan evo chair about six months ago. It’s pricey for what it is, but so are quality office chairs.

I wanted something comfortable to relax in, not a chair that forces strict ergonomic postur. I move around a lot crossing legs, putting one leg up and i feel like many expensive office chairs don’t allow that. I use it for gaming or sitting anywhere from 1 to 6 hours, and it’s never felt uncomfortable.

Overall, it’s still an expensive chair and will get criticism for being “gaming style,” which I understand it’s not as ergonomic as some alternatives.
For reference, the fabric version shows no noticeable wear after six months. I dont regret buying it, although i haven't tried many other expensive chairs.

      • Your colleague is a fool to recommend an "ergonomic" gaming chair. Those 2 words do not go together. "Gaming chairs" don't make sense. They look like racing car seats with high side bolsters. Why would a chair need that? For going 2Gs around the table? Ridiculous. The fact that these types of chairs are designed AROUND this look makes it an INSTANT FAIL.

Buy a proper office chair from a real brand not aimed at children.

    • It's 12 year warranty so you would hope that it's going well after just 4.

  • Bugger. If only they had the original silver/pepper colour combo.

  • great chair I got mine 4 years ago from gumtree.

  • I have been eyeing Steelcase chair since 2022 but haven't been able to confirm whether they fit my body.

Currently having Harman Miller Aeron 2 & Buro Metro 24/7 but they're too big and doesn't go low enough.

Would anyone able to confirm whether this would be a good fit for 153cm tall?

Or any alternative for good ergo chair?

    TIA

    • I'm a bit surprised. I'm 157cm and have a Herman Miller Aeron Remastered - Size A, which fits well for me. I made do for a while with the HM Mirra 1, which has an adjustable depth seat pan that was just able to go short enough for my thigh.

A disappoint with the Aeron is the armrest. The Steelcase Gesture "4D" adjustable armrests look good for getting close to the desk.

    • Just buy a shorter gas lift for the HM, if you want to keep it. Cheap and easy, just check google

      • Unfortunately the HM is at work so I won't be able to make any modifications to it.

Pretty certain that it's size B.

Looking for something with a bit of cushion like the Leap or Series 2.

Multiple sources pointing to Steelcase having a shorter lift but Steelcase have been saying otherwise.

Aftermarket is not recommended due to the top activated lift.

        • Up to you. I replaced a Leap 2 gas lift (gas had run out) and it was pretty easy, except that it had been jammed in there hard after 10+ years of use. Easier to remove a new one I’d imagine (Amazon likely delivers it disassembled too).

The OEM lift is quite low at its lowest though, I think you’ll be ok. Great chair too!

    • apply coupon

  • I found a near new condition one on FB marketplace for like $300, highly recommend checking it out before buying new. So many offices in Sydney and Melb CBD empty getting rid of these kind of chairs to middle men refurb companies.

    • Check under the seat I bet you its manufactured 2007/2008. Used ones are always super old.

      • if the condition is still good, it doesn't really matter when it was built.

        • I bought mine used for $200 in 2016 or 2017, and to date it has remained comfortable, and had zero issues even with the gas strut, so I agree with this.

I don’t have armrests though, but in general I don’t like them because they get in the way.

          • @Mungulz: My Leap is V1 model from the 2000s? still going strong - only had to replace the gas strut because it no longer held up.. tried a dodgy way of attaching wood planks and clamps to keep it at the right height then forked out the $200 for a new strut but still going strong. Very well built for a 20+ year chair

      • Damn, those chairs have had a lot of farts

  • Price is great for new, anyone know if a local seller (Arki for QLD or Steelcase generally) would support warranty?

The Amazon shop/seller 'Steelcase Australia' doesn't provide much info on their storefront.

    • Amazon direct for warranty support, but I suppose you could attempt to contact steelcase direct - it'd be treated as a once off so I doubt you'll get a clear answer here.

There's absolutely no shot that Arki or another third party would support warranty for an amazon chair.

    • I bought a Steelcase Gesture in 2021 and put a warranty claim on the cushion end of last year due to the stitching coming apart, pretty seamless interaction with ARKI's support, I just needed to provide photos and email them, and they sent the replacement cushion with no other questions asked.

Mind you the it was still under warranty for that specific part. I believe it was a month or some away from it being out of warranty for the upholstery.

Edit - YMMV however because I bought direct through ARKI, not through Amazon

  • Is this V1 or V2?

    • V2 was released in 2006 so it should likely be V2.

    • V1 is long discontinued… doubt you can find one new.

  • Great chair but I wish it had a headrest

    • The headrest version of the leap is a pile of dung anyway - there's no adjustability to it

      • you can get Atlas headrest, though which is what I've got on my HM Embody!

https://atlasheadrest.com/en-au/products/headrest-for-steelc… - if the headrest was a dealbreaker; consider this. It's not cheap but it's fully matched and adjustable.

      • It looks like it forces your head too far forward - can it be moved back?

        • Yes; has the rods at the back dictating how far forward/back it can be, however that also depends on height - if you're taller you've probably got the full range; if you're shorter you'll probably be more limited by the top of the seat itself as it'll push against that.

    • The headrest is notoriously uncomfortable apparently.

      • OEM from Steelcase is a pos.
The one from atlas is much better… It's not cheap though at $300 but worth it!

    • I actually got this aftermarket headrest and found it pretty good so far
      https://www.officelogixshop.com/en-au/products/steelcase-lea…

      • Interesting - I've been eyeing the Atlas for a while but was not sure how comfortable it would be - this looks a lot nicer to my eyes - I'll have to investigate!

        Any issues/cons with yours?

  • Strongly suggest you try before you buy. I tried out all of Steelcases range in showroom a few years back and I just couldn't find comfort in any of them. I understand some chairs need lots of adjustment/breakin but I didn't even get that far; the seat cushion is just way too thin!

I ended up with a Herman Miller Embody - have had no pain issues in the tailbone/butt etc since - it's been the only chair that I don't have that issue in after a few hours! It's absolutely way too expensive but I plan to use it til it breaks so eh. (Also trialed this at Living Edge Alexandria Syd).

That said; if it's comfortable for you; it's a great price!

    • Agree with this, unless it's simple to return a chair via Amazon, I wouldn't risk just purchasing it. Chairs are one of those things that you won't know until you try.

I went to my local deal Steelcase and Haworth as well as HM dealer to check out all the main chairs, and none of the Steelcase chairs worked for me.

  • Pretty poor reviews at 3.5 on Amazon. Not saying it's bad but it's rare to see anything poorly reviewed on Amazon. Often items that are pure garbage are 4.0 and above on there.

    • Can you really make a judgement on it based on 8 reviews?

    • Fortunately you don't have to rely upon only Amazon reviews.

The Steelcase Leap has been around for decades and is a very popular/well known task chair. You'll be able to find countless reviews elsewhere online.

  • Has anyone find the cushion on this is too thin?

Bought a 2nd hand one but I'm not sure if the cushion has completely given up or what. I've had to buy cushion pad.

But a very good chair given the adjustments available.

    • The main complaint about the leap specifically is due to the thin pad they provide.

Alot of people complain about this online and the general advice is that it takes a few weeks to get used to. Using a seat pad or cushion is a work around but also affects the ergonomics of the chair.

      • I think the argument they made is that it's thin so that after some period of time you feel the need to move around - moving is part of the ergonomics - get up out of your chair; go for a walk; stare outside for 5mins etc. Sitting for prolonged periods in general is just a bad idea, but I think it's a poor excuse for crappy padding on a north of a thousand dollar chair lol

    • Sometimes after a few hours, I feel it slightly but take it as a sign I need to stretch. Overall, good for me at 90kgs.

    • I have a second hand one as well, and find the same issue with the cushion. I was wondering exactly the same thing, if it was just mine, or if they will all be like that. I find after a few hours it gets really uncomfortable on my butt.

  • Great chair, although I personally prefer Okamura's.

  • Cushion way too thin for me — returned and got the Herman Miller Aeron and 10x happier.

    • Ever see them on "reasonable" sale though?

      • Never for a true "bargain" price — after some hunting, I picked one up from Chairhub in Melbourne (fella's name was Jason, very friendly). The "fully loaded" version I bought is currently "on sale" for $2595 which is not a bargain — but I am sitting in it for at least 50 hours a week, and and I'll have this chair for the next 10 years, so worth it for me.

        • yeah, to minimise the discomfort it is worth it to me as well. The problem I had with the Aeron is there are so many different permutations of it!

          • @Fybre: I had this difficulty but chat to Jason — he is a total chair nerd. When I saw the chairs in person I knew that I wanted the "fully loaded" version above because of (1) polished alloy feet (looks better than the plastic) and (2) arm rests. The Mineral suits my office but otherwise some of the other colours are cheaper.

  • Sold out! Dang, Missed it.

  • Aaaaand missed it. Oh well

  • Late to the party. OOS

  • Excellent price. As others have said, for a chair in its price, the cushion is absolute trash. Still find the Buro Metro 2, with its cushion far more comfortable. Tried a variety of other seat cushions on top of my Leap v2 and they don't work. Disappointing that a chair half its price is far more comfortable. Does anyone at Steelcase take any feedback and implement it? The Leap cushion was trash in V1, then they did nothing about it in the V2.

    • Agree with the Buro Metro 2 having superior cushion. Would have loved it but the thick cushion made it too high for me at the lowest seat level. One sitting and had to post it on marketplace. Wish I have longer legs lol

      • I'm glad I saw these posts. I was thinking I missed out but I find the Metro 2 (bought from new) uncomfortable after about an hour so can't imagine I'd have much fun with the Leap at all.

  • Been using a V1 for probably 10 years now, armrest padding fell apart but apart from that rock solid. I'm 6'4 100kg as well with a shit back and absolutely love the chair.

  • These are great chairs, you can get one for half this price on gumtree used. Because they are so well built they will last a lifetime so used is fine.
I bought one 5 years ago expecting to have to get it re-cushioned and upholstered at my small local guy who does this, but I never had to. Still perfect today after daily use.

    • I've had a Steelcase Think for about 14 years and used it for many thousands of hours.

Apart from the upholstery needing a good clean, it's basically in the same condition as it was new.

  • I got 2 of these from an office that was being closed down, had to replace armpads and gas on one of them - but got them for $250 each. Love them, great chairs - would choose over Aeron any day.

For reference I am 5"10 and about 90kg and spend 10-12 hours some day on it. Even for 2nd hand chairs they are in great condition 5 years on as they are super durable.

    • I have both the Aeron and the Leap (V2) and I would have to agree - for me at least, the customisability and comfort of the seat padding are superior (and I haven't experienced any issues with sweatiness)

    • Would certainly choose the SC over the Aeron.

  • I've been using this chair for a number of years. I couldn't get rid of the loud creaking noise from the spring in the recline mechanism no matter what I tried. Any ideas?

  • The price are still affordable compare to Herman Miller, but missed this great deal

  • smh thought of it for too long and its now out of stock xD

  • $1000 is a bargain for a chair for Ozbargainers?

    • The mattress I sleep on for 8 hours a day was $2000. Is it not reasonable to spend half that on a chair?

I spend more time on this than my lounge which cost much more.

      • This is the way.

Anything between you and the ground or that you use multiple hours a day is worth spending time to find the right one + spending a little bit more..

Shoes, Mattresses, Desk chairs. Couches to a lesser degree but I'm not sitting ergonomically on a couch; I'm usually pretzeled in some way so it's less important to be fully supportive :P. That said 200 dollar IKEA couches ain't it folks.

    • A cheap chair can wreck your back with years of pain, physio bills, and misery – easily costing way more than $1k.

Your future back will thank you!

    • I would argue the quality of chair has had more impact on me than my mattress.

I used one of the Ikea Markus chairs for years and swore by it, still is a great value chair.

Amazing how much having a premium chair has improved my back and posture, honestly it is the one of the few places I can sit with minimal discomfort for long periods of time.

  • Why would you buy this when a Herman Miller Aeron Remastered is only double the price? /s

  • I’m a big boy I’m 6ft5 and heavy I got Leap (Holiday Edition) New Black Henry / With arms, No headrest BF last year got it brand new from Steelcase Australia $991.21 AUD delivered. I can honestly say someone who has gone through a dozen of the “cheaper” brand chairs since 2006 this is worth the money, I do long hours, have a lower back problem this chairs perfect and lots of padding also.

Now I will say it’s got so many tweaks and tunes and features but honestly never played around with them. Highly recommend this chair.

    • I'll second this. 6'7" and probably 110kg here and snagged a leap V2 from an office refurb in 2021. replaced the dodgy gas lift and it hasn't missed a beat since. I used to break a $100 chair every couple of years, this thing is 10+ years old and rock solid.

I agree with those who say the padding felt relatively thin at first but it doesn't seem to reduce comfort, I stopped noticing after a couple of days.

  • $999 for a chair!? Yikes!

    • right this way sir, just the chair for you sir https://www.kmart.com.au/product/advwin-ergonomic-office-cha…

Manged to keep it under $50 for you sir

      • you just saved your ozbargain membership
