OMBRA Daily Defence Face Moisturiser Sunscreen Untinted or Medium Tint SPF50+ (New 2025 Formula) 60ml $4.99 @ Aldi

170

The once a year seasonal special at Aldi has been released. This is a daily wear face sunscreen with no water-resistance. Previous versions been very reliable for being lightweight and non-sticky. Unfortunately there is no longer an Aldi close to me and I have been forgetting to check the shelves the last few times I've been there, so I'm not sure how long it's been out for.

Even though this used to only be $3.99 a tube, $4.99 is still decent if you're after a small tube of sunscreen.

Price comparison:

This year's release seems to have a new AUSTL number judging by the product image - 476781. Looking up the ARTG search, this is the full list of ingredients. The sunscreen filters have changed, there are now 5.

  • butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane 40 mg/g
  • ethylhexyl triazone 30 mg/g
  • homosalate 100 mg/g
  • octocrylene 80 mg/g
  • octyl salicylate 40 mg/g

If anyone has tried this new formula, please let us know how it is in the comments. Hopefully it has kept the same lightweight feel like previous versions. Edit: Apparently not…

    This is now the way

  • Switched to lrp after the last fiasco. Expensive but a much nicer sunscreen that doesn't melt into my eyes

The new formula is quite different to the old formula. What has changed is the following:

    • colour is now snow white, old has a pink hue
    • new one is quite runny, old is more thicker and pasty in texture
    • new feels greasier, old formula doesn’t feel greasy
    • new leaves a shine after applying, whilst old is invisible matt
    • new one has no smell, old one has a smell when applied

The new one no longer states

    • invisible matte
    • fragrance and oil free

Overall, when using the new one, it feels quite similar to the regular sunscreen that Aldi sells.

Wow, thanks for the review. It sounds like it's no longer lightweight, that's such a shame as that was the best thing about it :(

      • You're welcome moocher. I am quite surprised with the significant change in the formula for 2025. I did noticed a small change in 2024 from the 2023 formula leading to a change in smell. Overall the change from 2023 to 2024 was not significant as it didn't alter the texture and feel on the skin. This years change is quite significant as the sunscreen feels totally different. I may go back to Hamilton Everyday Face that you recommended in the past as I find that closer to the old OMBRA Daily Defence Moisturiser Sunscreen formula.

        • Yeah it's a shame that the change was so drastic…

Just to confirm, was your older tube in the photo the one with AUSTL 408969 printed? Unfortunately the TGA listing for previous versions seems to be gone, but here's the table with the breakdown of ingredients that I posted 2 years ago. As far as I know the last formula was released late 2023 (but of course would be sold then onwards too).

          • @moocher: Yes, it is the same number as the one in the photo. Also want to confirm that the number and ingredients for the 2023 and 2024 are the same. However, strangely the 2024 batch doesn’t smell as pleasant as the 2023 batch, leading me to think there was a change in formula.

            • @haz: Ah I see, thanks for confirming!

  • Price drop to $2.99. Maybe it's not selling well this year due to the formula change
