      • -1 point for not being able to spell the party you're sledging
+1 point for clearly not being a russian bot (they can spell)

        • Maybe they are commenting on the UK party.

    • What about height discrimination, why aren't the left wing protesting this discrimination

    • Answer this fundamental question first: Is anything free in this world?

      • Advise is free lol, air that you breathe is free?

        • The word you were going for here is 'advice'.

'Advise' is a verb, 'advice' is a noun. Here's a short sentence demonstrating correct use of both words:

'I advise you to take my advice.'

          • @GnarlyKnuckles: Thank you tons Shakesphere

    • If they're funding these schemes with tax revenue, great…no issues there.

Problem is when these schemes are funded by more debt on top of already unsustainable debt. VIC debt has jumped from $168.8 billion last year to $187.9 billion this year and their debt interest payments are projected to rise from $6.8 billion this year to $10.6 billion by 2028–29.

      • no one seems to be talking about USA debt?

        • It is just so bad they can’t possibly ever get out from under in.

        • You are comparing the debt of an entire country of almost 400 million people to a state government debt with a population of about 4 million people.

And also, no one talking about the USA debt, do you live under a rock? Every single time the debt ceiling needs to be increased it’s all over the news. Government shutdowns, workers not being paid, highest debt ever…

        • Are we suppose to follow someone jumping off the cliff?

        • I mean we don't live in the USA? Who cares

          • @killingtime: Because the USA is the first domino. It crashes we all go down, at least for a while.

        • USA best county, America name itself is fancy like newyork New Jersey Vegas etc etc all names fancy vibrant lol I want to go to newyork… who don’t want to be an American lol…. America craze for everyone outside America lol … so I talked about America 🇺🇸

      • Most kids don't pay already, fare evasion is rife.

      • Of course, we can all thank 'Teflon Dan' for this astronomical—and growing—state debt. It is simply astonishing that he was able to 'conveniently slip away' post-COVID, and was never held accountable for … well … any of his numerous monumental fiscal/COVID (and other) screw-ups. This baffled me at the time, and it still does. As a direct result of these observations, I actually have no idea what motivates Victorian voters at the state level. Teflon Dan did everything wrong (policy/monetarily-wise/etc.) throughout his entire 'reign', but inexplicably he just kept getting voted back in.

I now suspect that Teflon Dan is some sort of modern-day incarnation of Franz Anton Mesmer. It is the only hypothesis that can logically account for his repeated political 'success', despite the fact that everything he ever touched turned to s##t, and everything he ever did he did totally ineptly; resulting in massive state debt that will take generations to pay off.

        • Goes to show you how bad the State opposition must be

    • This benefit is for those that can't vote.

      • What about parents of kids? What about 16-17yo who will remember this (a la Adobe and Microsoft who turn a blind eye to software piracy to obtain mindshare when students are poor, but marketshare when those same students become professionals).

      • The financial benefit goes to the voting parents who were previously paying. Although as tax payers they are also paying.

    • !remindme 12 months

Not because I don't agree, I just like to check back when people making swreping statements

    • Yeah they said that before the last election and Labor picked up a seat. The LNP are a rightwing rabble.

      • Exactly. Don’t know their head from their ar*e.

        • Frankly they are just culture wars. The joke is even their moderates have worked for the IPA.

          • @try2bhelpful: They complain about knife crime in Victoria, yet they all happily stab each other in the backs to get better roles etc.

            • @HamBoi69: Reminds me of the comment. “Of course we stand behind our leader, it makes it easier to stab them in the back”.

            • @HamBoi69: There are a few people here who will quickly run out of negatives for today. I do not mind the negs because these people are negative in general. It is a badge of honour.

            • @HamBoi69: I’m willing to bet not one person in Ozbargain has been a victim of knife crime or even seen someone attacked. Not saying it doesn’t happen just that the media exaggerates for the clicks.

              • @try2bhelpful: Then you lose the bet. Been stabbed on 3 different occasions, tho only once in Vic, and ended up on life support when attacked with a pool cue. It does happen but I agree media distorts shit for their own purposes.

                • @sharkyoz: That is very rough. I hope you have recovered from your injuries.

I suspect you are pretty much an outlier here. Not trying to victim blame but maybe you need less exciting places to hang around in.

                  • @try2bhelpful:

maybe you need less exciting places to hang around in

…but that's where the best deals are always found, and get OzBargained very quickly! ;)

                    • @new2onlineshopping: “Off the back of a truck” deals? I still think physical assault is a high price to pay for a bargain.

              • @try2bhelpful: Yet almost every Ozbargainer has been cut by a Victorinox steak and tomato knife.

    • Seen the alternative options?

    • Betting markets say otherwise.

    • They will win easily. Same as last election. Liberals are an absolute dumpster fire and the Greens have imploded as well. Who is this other alternative everyone will ditch Labor for?

    • As much as any normal person should despise them, there is not actually any opposition party, so they will sadly be allowed to continue the ruin.

  • Honestly think it should be extended to people on healthcare card/pensioner card. Would help people get back on there feet finding work and some of the older population

      • aww the Victoria Carer Card is so sweet and awesome! so many unpaid carers who need the support

    • it should actually just be free for everyone, well zero charge, not free, tax pays for it.

start by taxing any oil and gas exports

remove the myki ticketing system, remove all the need for sales systems… thats over $1b saved there….

would take thousands, probably 10s of thousands of cars off the road (the -it's cheaper to drive crew) and benefits for all

      • It is an interesting idea but I don’t think we have the capacity to take all the people on public transport. I ride the trams quite often and the free trams in the city are pretty full. During peak hour the trams are already very full outside the city and I suspect the trains are similar.

Do agree with taxing our resources properly.

      • Agreed.
        Salmon farms too.
Plus, when you remove the ticketing system and all the back end that goes into it, long term, the savings are enormous.
Plus, all the ticket prices are checking rangers/staff will no longer be needed, further savings thousands of dollars, assuming they're all on $100k pa, given shift timings and loading.

We should have $1 tickets everywhere.

I see school kids just push through the barriers. They don't care.

      • Love this. Corporate welfare or socialism for billion dollar mining companies and even religious institutions is insane.

      • PT should be free for everyone

Myki cost $1.7B when it was awarded
        https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-05-21/myki-public-transport…

Myki is now $137M over budget
        https://www.9news.com.au/national/victoria-state-budget-long…

By comparison, the free public transport for kids is only projected to cost a paltry $40.9M in 2025-6, increasing to $97.5M in 2028-9 (Victorian Budget 2025/6 Service Delivery Budget Paper No. 3 page 83).

Kids 5-18 make up around 18% of the population (kids 0-4 another 6%)
        https://www.planning.vic.gov.au/guides-and-resources/Data-sp…

By extrapolation, extending free travel to everyone should cost around $173M for 2025-6, up to $412M in 2028-9.

This is still way less than it costs to run Myki.

Free public transport is a no brainer.

        • Plus the institutional cost of enforcing and monitoring and administrating and prosecuting

        • No offence, the idea is good but a bit utopia. Myki is not just the cost, but also the passengers influx control.
The ticket is basically a way of voting who wants to get on the train more than others. If that’s taken away, it will be hard to get on the train coz there could be people live on the train😂

  • Good start

  • "saving families up to $755, per child, per year."
0 for me. But, you're welcome.

    • I honestly believe “you’re welcome”. I didn’t I incur the expense or effort of having a kid but I’m going to need a bunch of “someone’s child” to be my aged care support services et al.

      • Can't we just import more third world slaves for that though?

        • Only as long as they have lots of kids.

  • Saves lots of fights between authrosied officers and eshays.

    • Eshays won’t want to pay the $5 for the card.

  • Shame on NSW Labor

  • Curious to see how we'll get existing credit back from Myki.

    • You can do that on the pt website, or on a ticket booth at some stations. Takes a couple of minutes

  • Hey NSW, when are you going to follow suit?

    $0.5c in qld for everyone!

    • No need to follow but just give free for age group 35-45 😄😄😄🤗

    • Hey, I just wanted to kindly point out that the way you’ve written 50 cents there is a bit confusing

      Either do 50c or $0.50

Otherwise it looks like 0.5 cents :)

Hope you have a great day

      • Thanks mate.
I had my Microsoft Calc brain on at the time and that's how it displays on the calc. I will not multitask next time!

  • I wish it was free for age groups 35-45 too in NSW lolz

  • Will be interesting to see how they manage this, will student cards have special myki chips in them, or will they start leaving the gates open at the major train stations?

    • I mean, do kids even pay nowadays? I bought my kids mykis and pay their ticket, but i never see other kids paying for theirs, to the point i though i was doing something wrong and even asked a ticket inspector about it once. They told me kids 5+ should pay, but they rarely check them

    • To access free travel from January, they must use a new youth myki card and tap the card on and off each time they travel.

Do people not read anymore.. not the first comment on this post to ask basically the exact same thing that is explained three sentences in.

      • It’s almost like the original post was edited after I posted, which you can clearly see from looking at the edit history.

        • Oh okay if that’s the case then my bad

  • Just make it free for everybody

    • Yeah, bit surprised by all the negativity here to be honest. Out of all the shit way the government spend money, this is probably one of the better ones.

I don't even use public transport myself but if they make it free for everyone and it all comes out of our tax dollars, then I think thats a net benefit to everyone. I wouldn't surprised if overall productivity increases too, will be way less cars on the road and heaps more on PT.

      • Same. I don’t use it but if it takes the pressure off the roads then it’s a no brainer

  • payphones are freee now…..

    • Notice all the bright colourful LCD advertising panels on pay phones everywhere now? Telstra are exploiting a loophole and making a killing off it. Far outweighs whatever the calls cost.

  • Government sponsored ageism.

  • To access this you will need the new "youth myki" - they are available to order now, and cost $5. They reckon they are already facing high demand so if you're interested you should probably buy your $5 free travel myki now.

    • What are they gonna do? Fine kids for not tapping on…..?

      • Its probably more so the kids can go through the gates?

    • Any mention yet whether it can be obtained and used via Android phones (Google Wallet), like other Myki passes?

  • Authorised officers probably tired of policing young offenders. Unlikely they'll pay up anyway.

  • as long as this is coupled with sacking all the ticket inspectors I actually think this would save the state money

    • The most useless occupation in the entire state.

      • Oh come now, we have loads. I noticed we now have crossing supervisors at pedestrian crossings that have buttons/lights and have been in operation for decades. That's pretty top notch too!

  • i identify as he, him, and under 18.

  • Good time to move out ifof NSW.. only taxes no benefits 🫤

  • I don't even have children. Why not just fire myki inspectors and subsidise fares!!! 100% they're going to increase the fares for 18+ to pay for this and make WFO 5 days mandatory.

  • Nothing’s actually free , taxpayers are the ones picking up the tab. Just wait, council rates, energy bills, land tax… all of that is gonna creep up sooner or later.

    • Good lol, happy to pay more tax if it benefits society (free public transport/free school lunches etc etc)

      • In long run free feeding cripple economy…

      • We pay enough tax as it is. Gubment should be spending it way more effectively.

        • Australians pays less than the OECD average. it might not seem like it, but relative to other developed countries we are a low-tax country

    • Wait till you find out how much taxpayers pay for building and maintaining roads!!

  • I'm wondering without card how they pass the gate
