What's 30k points in AU dollars worth

    • +7

Air Canada points are some of the most valuable imo, 45k points to Singapore and South East Asia with very minimal taxes in Business

      • Question: Am I correct to assume that you would need to go through Air Canada's website to use the Aeroplan points, which in-turn obtains the cheap/super valuable deals that you speak of - for example 45k points from Australia - Singapore?

        • Yes. But you would need to collect 15k more points somehow to redeem business class flights .

          • @Autonomic: Yeah - ok that makes sense. I guess if you held onto it for the second year, you'd get the additional 20,000 points, but the condition is that you must spend $48k in the first year and you would get slugged with the annual fee.

I've only recently started looking into all this, as I have roughly 800,000 AMEX points to transfer prior to the dec 15 devaluation. I was doing research yesterday on how to best go about it as I'm going to Europe in June next year - for the most part, I've managed to find some decent one-way business class flights, but unfortunately the return (July) doesn't exist likely as a result of high demand (in general) and because I'm booking late.

I always read these amazing stories of people obtaining business for super cheap to Europe return, but obvs there's numerous factors such as booking 350-365 days out and being flexible with where you land/exit.

            • @eltito: Europe summer is always difficult. If you can transfer to Qantas you may open up more indirect options. Most airlines are not releasing seats 365 dates anymore and are instead releasing them in batches. There's a guy called Points Coach on instagram who seems to be on top of most of the releases. He charges $25/month which is not the worst deal. There may be other services that do something similar.

              • +2

@Autonomic: In my experience you're more likely to win lotto than find Qantas reward seats to Europe. Not that I've ever won lotto

                • +1

@caustic birch: Direct? Very rare. Indirect? It's possible.

                • @caustic birch: I've done Europe through Qantas 2 years in a row yet, although took a bit of flying to different places, and stop over a day or two, I managed to do it

              • @Autonomic: Thanks for the confirmation (and the added info of the releasing them in batches). I'll check out the Points Coach and see what he/she offers - honestly in the grand scheme of things, $25 a month is nothing when you'll likely spend as much on a weekend brunch (coffee included) and that's literally a 1-2 hour enjoyment, whereas you could potentially get a solid 12–20 hour enjoyment from a business flight ha!

I've seen heaps of these services in the past and always been reluctant to give them a go because although I'm sure you can find great availability for say Sep-Nov to europe (being off-peak ish), I only think about my personal circumstance, which in this case is to Europe in June.

Re: Summer difficulty - I have read this in the past when I've thought about doing it, and it's one of the reasons why I've never fully bothered to be immersed into this frequent flyer world (along with deals getting progressively worse, which is a sign of the times). I'm currently awaiting a name change on my AMEX (to include my surname) so that I can transfer points as I did find a few carriers offering one way via business in May/June and of which I'll take up. At this point it's either that, or I just keep hoarding points of which are being devalued).

                • +1

@eltito: I did europe through qantas points last year. Booked business return via China Airlines so flew to Taiwan and then onwards. Taiwan is good tourism spot too so consider spending some time there.

                  • @jedimaster: Interesting, can I ask what months you did it in (curious to know if it was like in peak European summer) and how far out did you book?

Also, I've never done business class before, so if I'm successful with my booking - it'll be my first time flying business. I assume there are various tiers of business, and am wondering what your thoughts were (good/bad) on China Airlines business?

                    • @eltito: I booked a year in advance as soon as the availability showed up(Mid May) and the return in (mid June). All flights in business for 2 people and were very good compared to Qantas business. I am Qantas Bronze. We flew 23 April to Taipei, then on 28th April to Amsterdam, did inland via trains and small flights and out via Rome on 10th June back to Taipei and then to Melbourne. If you are going I encourage you not to go during June or after. As soon as June started, it was very hot everyday, you rarely see any clouds and the massive crowds make it worse. The best days we had were during the month of May (very pleasant temperatures 20-27). We covered Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, Grindelwald, Zurich, Lucerne, Milan, Venice, Florence, Pisa, CinqueTerre, Amalfi, Naples(avoid, phone stolen), Rome.

I use this website to see which all cities a certain airline goes to and then plan accordingly
                      https://www.flightconnections.com/route-map-china-airlines-c…

                      • @jedimaster: Interesting, thank you for the additional info - it's much appreciated and helps with my current/future planning.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but you booked a year in advance for when you were planning to leave (so May the year before), and as soon as seats became available, you booked 2 x business one way. Then, you waited a month, and as soon as the tickets for June the following year were released, you booked your one way return ticket?

So essentially, you had two one-way itineraries, which obvs isn't an issue, and obvs I assume Qantas can combine them if needed (into one ticket). Silly me, I never thought of this, I always figured doing a return ticket is the way to go, but this wouldn't be attainable if they release tickets only 1 year in advance (and never thought of doing 2 x one way).

                        • @eltito: Yes, booked 2 separate one way tickets in May 2023 and June 2023 for travel in 2024. I had no need to combine the ticket. Useful if the flights are near and one can cause missed connection for the other. What others commented is also true that reward seats are released in batches as well. I suggest getting premium(2-3 months) with seats.aero as it makes searching & planning easier and also setup alerts for when seats release. Althought I didnt have to use it for mine but your usecase has less time left so worth a shot. As long as you are flexible with dates, you can score something. All the best!

                • @eltito: I've redeemed points for Business and First between Australia-Europe (MEL-LHR mostly, but flexibility is key) on Qantas, Cathay Pacific, Singapore, British Airways, Emirates and Qatar Airways - it's definitely a tricky business finding the flights when you want to go, so if you're flexible on dates that helps, but it's entirely possible.

Also, continually checking for availability helps, as the carriers release additional inventory at random times - I've booked all the way from almost a year out (most accept bookings somewhere between 330-360 days out) to the day before flying (literally, I booked EK First for the next day during January a few years back).

One more thing, which is somewhat obvious, but one seat is easier to find than multiple - if you need multiple seats, consider separating the flights (easier said than done if kids are involved, but if it's just two adults it's quite easy - my OH would rather fly solo than in economy haha!).

            • +1

@eltito: If you can. Transfer to Hawaiian Airline which in turn allows you to transfer to Alaska Airline. They have some of the cheapest rate with a free transfer as well. I flew Vietnam to Taipei on Starlux with Alaska Airlines for 7.5k points and $42 in taxes.

              • @nightelves: Thanks for the heads up, I will say when I think about transfer into a transfer (like you've mentioned), I get a bit iffy, noting that European summer is already difficult to find anything as is, and that's the main goal of using my current points. Personally, I don't mind economy when I'm doing short haul flights

                • @eltito: I remember when Amex point could transfer into Marriott Rewards which allowed you to buy 7 night packages and airlines points. Those were so good. Stay at the Marriott Tokyo for 7 nights free during Cherry Blossom season. Saved us $4k in hotels.

            • @eltito: There are a lot of individual factors that make it all seem too good to be true. It still is possible to get really good deals though.
A lot of it is having time, money, and flexibility. Time to do your research and homework. Money to get the sign up bonuses and point purchase offers. Flexibility to be able to plan holidays around availability, flexibility with your route (e.g, to get to where you intend on going, you may need to divert to a random airport because it's less points to book that route instead of a direct flight), and flexibility with finances (to accrue points).

For most people, earning points through points is pretty much pushing a boulder up a hill. Many credit cards are earn one point per dollar spent. So if you want the extra 15K points, you would need to spend $15K extra. Then when you consider CC annual fees, the value becomes even more questionable. For example, Krisflyer miles are generally valued at 1.5c each, so 15K points is $225. If your credit card annual fee is more then that, it becomes less worth it.

Purchasing points is good for when you have a specific plan for how to use the points. Air Canada often have offers for 80% bonus points. Sometimes it is 100% bonus, which is actually when you want to purchase the points. If you don't have a plan, you always risk them being devalued. You are also limited by yearly limits in how many points you can buy.

The last way is churn and burn Credit Cards. These sign up offers were often great in the past as you could get hundreds of thousands of points without much effort. However, they are progressively getting worse. Also, with the government making changes to banks and businesses charging excessive surcharges, I wouldn't be surprised if one of the areas hit is credit card frequent flyer mile accrual as a way for the banks to recuperate costs.

          • +1

@Autonomic: They regularly have bonus points buying deals throughout the year, hold out for that.

Also confirming AirCanada points are very good value for SEA travel, startlingly so at times.

            • +1

@zfind: I agree they're good. They seem to pull availability from a different inventory than SQ as well, so some routes have more availability (and some less).

          • @Autonomic: Would one earn additional points on spending with the card? If one spends $48K to maintain the status, that should get them probably $30K additional points (HSBC reduces accrual rate to 0.5 after $3k spend in a month).

          • +1

@Autonomic: Air Canada offers "purchase points", there are also bonuses that come on sale for these too.

It's also worth noting that whilst they advertise 45k points required, when you click into it, you can use a lower number of points than this and pay a higher CAD$ amount. (like 30k points + 900CAD)

I did this previously when I only had 50k points and was purchasing 2x BKK-SIN-SYD J class fares. I ended up spending another ~1K AUD out of pocket (including all the taxes), but compared to the cost of a single Y fare at $1800 for my partner, this was a no brainer, and had us both sitting on the upper deck of the A380.

I would only recommend purchasing points when there is a fare you want to book though, sometimes it can be hard to find availbility.

edit: going through my emails, I see that I had 52,800 points, purchased another 2000 for 70 CAD, then had 54,800 points. I paid 54,000 points + 920.20 CAD for the two J fares.

      • Is it possible to singapore airline flights using air canada points?

        • +3

Absolutely, I have purchased AC points and have used them from MEL-SIN-SGN for 45k AC points and multiple MEL-SIN-JFK/EWR flights for 110k each way in J

        • Singapore Airlines are generally pretty great at offering being able to purchase point redemption seats with another star alliance member (e.g., Air Canada). The exception is First Class redemptions. Just be aware that in some situations, doing a point redemption for one airline but using another airlines system, you have reduced amenities. For example, if you book a point redemption business class with Airline A but do it through Airline B, you may not get things like business class lounge access. This is not the case with Air Canada and Singapore Airlines, but other airlines have been starting to do that.

Both Singapore Airlines and Air Canada systems are both relatively easy to use. However, I find the server response time searching with Air Canada's much quicker.

  • If you are based in Australia, Singapore Airlines offer just seems more usable to me specially with the option to convert from Velocity

    • +3

You’re getting status for 24months (if status starts Jan) with Aeroplan, and you can still use VA/SQ for flights and points.

      • 24 Months do seem tempting - but point wise it's harder to earn Aeroplan points without flying.

        • +1

If you spend $30k thats another 24k points to add to your 30k aeroplan, which should be easily usable across different flights

      • +4

Its not 24 months, as soon as the card is cancelled the status is also immediately cancelled

        • +1

True, but if you pay for year 2, at least you dont need to do $48k in spend for your gold status to automatically continue

          • @Coops1: Oh you dont need to meet the min spend req for status in the 2nd year?

            • @AircraftFreight: Thats right. But if you want to extend status into a 3rd year, you need to do $48k spend in Year 2.

** YOU WONT GET extra 20k bonus points though

Note: Spend of $4k must be finished in say January 2026 to have status until December 2027, with an extra gratis 1 month extension to January 2028
If you do spend in December, it only goes to Dec26

              • @Coops1: @Coops1 I'm finding it a little confusing with the spend and expiry. Can you explain it a little differently into why if you finish in Jan you have status for 2 years but 1 if you spend in Dec

EditL: I read the impact of the calendar year. As a side note, has anyone been able to negotiate a reduction in annual fees?

                • @keji: From the comments in the previous posts, it looks like they do not negotiate a fee reduction. If there are two members in a household, then probably one can cancel for the other member to start a free first year. I am not sure if that would work. Someone else might be able to comment.

      • The status you speak off is the Star Alliance Gold Status, which if you have, it lets you access the Virgin Australia (domestic) and Singapore (international) lounges, however, am I correct in saying that the condition is that you still need to fly with that airline - i.e. having Gold Status but flying Jetstar Melb-brisbane won't grant you access to Virgin lounge domestically?

Furthermore, how do you use the Aeroplan points for VA/SQ flights - is it a case that you book it via Air Canada's website OR you can book via Virgin/Singapore websites and inputting your Aeroplan details?

        • Book via aeroplan website. I think you're right about lounges.

        • Yea you still have to fly on a star alliance partner airline, not jetstar as they are one world affiliated via Qantas

Yes you book via air canada/aeroplan. Virgin domestic comes up and you pay with aeroplan points and taxes in CAD (which you get ripped a bit on auto conversion - versus if you booked via virgin with velocity and AUD)

        • You still need to fly Virgin, Singapore or Star Alliance to benefit from the Aeroplan status

You still need to book on the Air Canada website to use points.

        • If i join Aeroplan will i have access to Singapore (international) lounges? I bought flights with another credit card (ANZ) scheduled to fly in April, assuming i spend the 4k by the end of this month will i have access to the Singapore lounge by April?

          • @Mistyxo: Yes, provided your ticket is one of the SA airlines then you can access any SA lounges.

            • @timhn: thank you, yes its with singapore airlines

      • You lose your status immediately upon cancellation of the card…

So then, am I correct in thinking this is only an advantage if:
1: You do NOT meet the spending criteria in the second year?
2: You immediately (somehow) (or as quickly as possible) meet the spending criteria in the third year? - otherwise you end up with a long gap without status in the third year.

So really, it depends on whether that gap in the third year is a problem or not, in exchange for a lowered spending in the 2nd year…. right? (assuming the points hacker has sufficient expenditure to discretionarily direct spending to different cards)

    • Be sure to use krisflyer within 3yrs. Aeroplan points keep having life extended if you earn more.

      • That's not too bad since you can always interchange with velocity if needed. Only issue with aeroplan is earning

      • Be sure to use krisflyer within 3yrs.

It's 3-year expiry, per tranche of points.

    • +2

I had it a few years ago and just finished using my bonus points. Overall I found this to not be appropriate for my usage.

$60,000 spend was just insane to maintain status so I lost it. I don't travel enough for the perks to justify it. Ultimately, the one time I did actually fly Air Canada, I didn't even get business when it came down to it as there weren't enough spots and I wasn't high enough on the status list to get it.

This is what you have to factor in - you'll rarely if ever fly Air Canada here in Australia so you won't be earning actual points the regular way, and then when you do fly, you're competing with legit "ULTRA BLACK DIAMOND DELUXE" status Canadians who will get preferred treatment.

It's a lot of money for a temporary bump in status, and overall probably just buying lounge passes is cheaper.

  • Could someone help me understand if i activated for this card 1.5 weeks ago just before the krisflyer and the aeroplan bonus points were announced, and haven't yet nominated my star alliance airline, can i nominate air canada now to partake in this offer?

    • contact.rewards@staralliance.com were always responsive to my questions.

    • Just checked TCS and apparently it's approved / opened from 1 December. I'd have thought this query would be for air Canada.

    • Hey have you got a reply or sorted it out? I also activated the card 1 week ago just before the campaign lol

  • +6

    A few points:
    - My personal valuation of 30k points is about $450
    - Getting star alliance gold status from a credit card is well worth it if you travel a bit
    - Air Canada has one of the best booking engines out there IMO - my favourite feature is that you can add in a layover for up to 8 days at no additional cost
    - This deal used to be 50k points up front. Since the value of points is constantly eroding from inflation and company policy changes from all the major airlines, I'm getting a bit sick of deals getting worse and worse. They should be offering us MORE points to stay competitive, not less.

  • i was planning to select united airlines and then do a status match for American Airlines and get One World Sapphire for 120 days since will be flying on Malaysia airlines soon. Hopefully united has something like that too

  • Tossing up between AC and UA. Other than domestic lounge access in the US (and this offer) is there any real difference between the two?

    • +1

I think for virgin you miss out on a few priority items but you still get lounge access domestically.

If you time it right and meet your spend in January with the card, you basically get 2 years lounge with Air Canada.

Air Canada do have point sales every so often so can top up there if you want a cheap premium class flight.

      • Cheers, I like the idea of maybe getting it a bit longer

      • although to keep AC status, your HSBC card needs to remain active, so you'll need to pay the second year annual fee to use all 2 years of status

        • Seems to be varying reports with one person below saying they kept it.

    • +1

AC status also gets you up to 40 eUpgrade credits which are honestly great if you're planning on flying international to/from/via Canada, but they can be complicated to use

  • Better to apply in January to maximize on status for 2 years?

    • Status is revoked as soon as card cancelled as per T&C and most comments. So the main consideration is the worth of paying the annual fee and meeting spend requirements for that second year. Below comment (unrealmacaw) is an impressive exception of keeping status past cancellation!

  • +1

Last time I was able to meet second year spend, get bonus points instead of star alliance gold for second year, then cancel card and get annual fee refunded. YMMV. (I also seem to still have gold status)

    • +1

they revoked my status about 2 months after cancelling :((

      • Boo, sorry! I think Amex might be the better deal anyway for lounges, at least for one year with bonus points to cover the annual fee

  • Hope this gets applied for me I coincidentally applied on 1 December got conditionally approved same day and fully approved a few days later. T's and cs look OK!

Anyone experienced this before? When did this actually go live?

  • Do I understand this correctly? - I can apply and receive this card now but Star Alliance Gold (via Aeroplan) only commences once I meet the minimum spend criteria?

Or is the status awarded from day 1 of card activation?

    • +1

You will get an email just after you meet the minimum spend, you nominate Aeroplan, then 14 days later you will get gold(50k) status.

  • +1

I'll be traveling to Singapore for work late January and then again late Feb.
Possibly one domestic flight next year as well.
I'm an ANZ customer, so looking for advice whether it's better to go with this or the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black Credit Card https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/850198 ?

    • +1

It depends more on your spends, in the next 3+ months.

If you also want the travel perks, then I can also suggest St. George Amplify card, which gives you 2x Priority Pass visits in a year.
So, on your travels, you can visit lounges in Singapore's Changi Airport, with Priority Pass.

However, for the bonus points on this Amplify card, it's a $12K spend, within 12-months, so that spend is quite high.

Otherwise, most of the Credit Cards have decent introductory offers, ie. the ANZ and Westpac cards are pretty good, because the initial spends are much lower, eg. $3K or 4K, and you get the bonus points, but you don't get lounge visits as part of your card.

There's also the AMEX Platinum Card which is great, in spite of its $1450 annual fee !
You can pretty much get that money back, if you avail the dining credit, travel credit, lounge access to 1400 lounges … and you get a 150,000 AMEX points now.

So, in the next 3 months, if you're going to spend big,…you have a few choices for Credit Cards, except you have to note that there's a lock-out period of 2-years, for St. George, Westpac and ANZ, ie. you can't go back to them for offers, within 2 years of closing down a card.

      For AMEX, I think it's a 1.5 year lock-out period.

  • Which CC should someone get if they are planning to travel to Hong Kong, China, or Japan in the next year?

    • That's a very open-ended question.

If you want a card without foreign exchange fees, eg… you can choose Bendigo Ready credit card, but no credit card points with this card.

There's also Wise or Revolut, but it's not exactly buying with credit nor does it give you credit card points.

      • Yea I have already applied for Bendigo Ready. I guess that's more for overseas transactions, etc. I was asking about CCs with frequency flyer points. There are so many CCs from ANZ, Westpac, and other and it was a bit overwhelming to go through it all. So, I thought of asking here what are people getting if they are travelling to these destinations.

        • +1

it was a bit overwhelming to go through it all

          RWRDS

    • Same as previous commenter said. It’s open ended. What airline are flying with Cathay, A China airline or someone else? What alliance is that airline in, Cathay are OW, so are some China airlines, but some are also star alliance.

  • +2

Got the card from last 50K deal - but cancelled it just before renewal. Luckily my 50K status wasn't cancelled and is still valid till Jan 26.

Can I reapply and get the bonus again or is there a waiting period?

    • 18 months

    • lucky you - my status got cancelled a week after my cancellation

    • What’s a 50k status ?

      • Star Alliance Gold

  • Any CC churners tossing between this deal and the Singapore one (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/936136).

Definitely cancelling upon bonus point award, so don't really care about the second year. Main concern is that these points won't be enough alone to book Business class flights…

    • I don't think the 20-30k points is worth the credit enquiry. This card has relatively generous earn rates up to 3k weirdly - as high as Amex Plat. If you don't even care about the gold status, better off sticking to the standard Black Velocity cards getting you 80-100k for that enquiry.

  • how about the HSBC offer to Singapor airline

    • it is also available. I got an email

  • For those currently on the 50k Air Canada level, like myslef.

Did you get the claimed extention to 30 Jan 26?

I got an email a while back saying instead of the 50k year ending at 31 Dec, it is now extended to 30 Jan of the following year.

However mine still shows as ending 31 Dec 25 ?

But maybe this doesnt matter as my 50k should renew on 1 Jan 26?

This is because I started HSBC card and met spend in Feb 2024, have kept card in 2025 paid CC annual fee and also did minmum spend in 2025.

I now assume my 50k will renew automatically on 1 Jan 26 and valid till 31 Dec 27 (as long as I pay 2026 annual fee).

  • Apply early Jan for 2 full years of status.

    BE WARNED!

you may get your 2 year 50k with Star Alliance Gold once you meet the requirements. if you cancel you card thinking the status will last, it will NOT!!!

18 months wait if you cancel to re-apply!

    • what if i applied in December and activated the card in Jan?

      • exactly what I did.. its the star alliance account activation that creates your airline account. if you do this in Jan, you will get 2 years with Air Canada (as long as you don't cancel the HSBC card)

  • "Existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card or customers who have held a HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card within the last 18 months are ineligible for this offer."
I currently have HSBC world Qantas credit card, first year free but renewing in a few weeks. I can't waive this annual fee then. Not worth it for me.

    • +1

Cancel you current HSBC world Qantas credit card and apply this card is NOT treated as transferring.

      • This is correct I confirmed it over the phone with their sales team.

Or applying it as a new separate card.

  • Thanks OP. Applied last night, approved this morning.

  • Given its fee free in the first year and only requires $4k spend for 30k points, I don’t see the downside to just cancelling before the AF is charged in year 2 ?
