      Art is never cheap

Mac mini plus 4K monitor combo is much better.

  • +3

still prefer my 2020 27" imac.

    • +2

      Why?

      • Also wondering why

    • Apple can never be boycotted, my bro. They're nearing 70% dominance in Aus already

The Mac Mini and the Macbook Air is exceptional value for money though. Ask anyone with the original 2020 M1 Airs, absolutely no intention of upgrading cause it's still so good.

Ask anyone with the original 2020 M1 Airs, absolutely no intention of upgrading cause it's still so good.

Nope. They've probably moved on to an M3.

      • Can confirm.

The only reason I need to upgrade at all is that I cracked the screen of my M1 MBA (16GB RAM), so now I just use it as my desktop device. It's been great, and still is.

(I have considered just getting the screen fixed and buying a Mac mini instead, but I think I've probably cooked the MBA's battery leaving it perma-plugged in.)

Download Al Dente, it's a program that can limit your battery charge. Set it to 70-80% to protect your battery

@redcafej: Exactly what I was going to say!

    • You probably find Macbook is a better option considering the ridiculous price of RAM and laptop with 32GB RAM specs.

    • +1

Hope you are boycotting Microsoft as well with its pricing of Surface products etc that are Apple Clones, also with ridiculous pricing

      • -1

Haha yes, people seem to miss that Surface products are vastly inferior and undergo way more significant depreciation. I'm taking from $2500 to $600 lmao.

Not to mention Microsoft is evil.

      • I use a Surface Laptop for work and my word, the amount of hangs is unreal. Can't believe a Microsoft product running a Microsoft OS is so bad, and I only use it for basic web browsing!

These Apple-haters hard-ons for the miniscule amount of Storage/RAM obviously have never used an Apple product with Apple Silicone. I have an M4 Mac mini waiting to be set up, seeing as my Win10 Media PC is on it's last legs.

  • Can this train AI model? Or the mini is better

    • With only 16gb of system ram, you're going to find this quite painful to use for ai inference for anything other than tiny models, let alone trying to fine tune a llm.

  • Is it possible to survive on only 256gb? It seems to gimped with no upgrade options.

    • -3

Thought this was 256gb of ram and got very excited. 256 of storage / 16 gb of ram is horrific.

      • +2

in the MacOS world it really isnt. my windows machine chokes on 16GB just with a few browsers with a bunch of tabs in it but my work mac on the same pages feels absolutely fine, with slack, spotify and a bunch of other apps running.

        • Yeah agreed. I switched companies and went from a MBA M2 16GB to an MBA M3 8GB and I didn't realise Slack + Meet + Chrome can bring this thing to a stuttery mess :(

    • I wouldn't go near 256GB for a laptop, but at least with a desktop you can add external storage fairly easily. But like others have said, this isn't really a great deal, and the Mac mini + monitor of your choice offers a lot better value.

      • I personally wouldn't either but after having a base spec Macbook for work with everything I do saved in the cloud, it's actually quite manageable… most of my local storage space is filled with downloaded movies to watch on the plane.

  • why are they so skimpy on ram and storage, well I guess now it makes sense (with latest price increase) but before that just no justification but greed

    bad apple !

    • +5

Apple devices manage RAM well and generally speaking you can get away with less RAM than you would configure on a windows machine.

      • riiiiiiight

  • Why would JB not price match, its their policy?

    • +1

something something not readily available stock something something. basically anything they can do to get out of price matching. standard JB i think

256GB?! You might as well live boot off of a USB

  • whats bloody glorious about green.

    • It’s a conversation starter, hi!
