One of the only ways to get a discount at OZ Design, thanks!

Obligatory warning (skip to 5:35 in) for theory on how they make their profits as that suggests the longevity of company and risk of holding onto card still having value.

    • I can assure you his maths doesn’t checkout.

ok, so your assurance is based on ?

The bloke in this video hacked into TCN card PIN's in 15min or so. So his logic credentials look pretty solid.

I would be more than happy if someone could show where this bloke is wrong. Peer review is a good thing.

        • Its an interesting issue. My guess is colesworth swallow some or all of the bonus points as a loss leader to get people into store even if they have 100% spend rate on the cards.

          • @Davelovesdealz: I can think of many other loss leaders than gift cards. The thing about gift cards is the cost of the product is the price of the product. I really cannot imagine colesworth taking a loss on a product with such a large money value at the expense of other profitable store items. I would think they would prefer you spend $100 on groceries than a gift card that cannot be redeemed in Colesworth. I can more understand a loss leader being a much smaller value item, such as BBQ chooks. Also gift cards are at the front of most stores so customers would not be passing many products.

My thinking is that TCN must be getting a much higher payment rate from the companies on the gift cards who in turn load that cost into the price of their goods. But I am only speculating from thin air. This bloke in the video appears to have done a much thorougher investigation it seems to come up with the figures he quotes.

        • ok, so your assurance is based on ?

Being a frequent poster of Gift Card deals, and with inside sources, you pretty quickly learn what the “margins” are. I’m not going to disclose them here on a public forum, but just as a public example, in the video, the person mentions loyalty points on the “20x” offers are only worth 5%, well you and I both know that’s wrong, as they’re equivalent of about 10%.

          • @HamBoi69: I need to pull you up on the 20x "worth" you have mentioned from the video as being incorrect. He claimed its an extra 5% cost to the gift card company, not the points value us customers get of 10%. I took that 5% statement the bloke said as implying a 50/50 split of the cost of the 20x promotion between Woolies and card company. At no time did he say the 5% is the points value you get from buying the card. So I still think his credentials and theory still stand.

He also mentions a 6% affiliate fee that card company gets back, not a nice round amount of 5%. So there is an implication that he may have a deeper insight of margins.

Again he still may be wrong. But to me his logic, credentials and evidence is pretty sound.

@HamBoi69: Hi, I made the video, your point here is ridiculous.

If the loyalty points are "worth" 10%, then this would mean that the gift card companies are losing even more money on every card sold during a promo period. This would make things even worse.

Also, re. "inside sources", I too spoke with many during this period of my life, likely much more "inside" than your "sources", without disclosing details here on a public forum, I am incredibly confident in my margin figures.

With all of that being said, they have now fixed the gapping hole in their systems and I'm not against people buying these cards generally, obviously be careful, but they are a way to save some money!

            • @deansimons: Hi there, I freeze framed your computer screen in the video, the hits per second on that end point was very impressive (over 280 hits per second).

        • One thing I do want to make clear. I dont want to discourage anyone from posting gift card bargains. I do think there is a bargain to be had. But just to make clearer the risks involved before the purchase feeding frenzy.

@deansimons - I was also impressed you had time to add emoji flourishes to the UI of your python code :)

  • Is Officeworks no longer part of Choice gift card?

    • Officeworks has never participated in the TCN gift card scheme (including TCN Choice gift cards).

Ah I mistaken it for the Celebrations gift card (red packaging) that includes Officeworks.

TCN are absolute nightmare to deal with !

I was given $200 gifrcard. While trying to convert it to use it online at one of the store the card didn't go through so I have tried to check the balance and it kept buffering so after 4-5 attempts of buffering card has been locked up.

Customer support is pathetic, the lady asked for reciept of purchase ! After explaining to her about gift and telling about registration that has been done on my name and email if that helps, she provided me email of support and disconnect the call !

After back and forth 6-7 emails they are still asking me to ring up the guy who purchased and asked him to go to store to get proof of purchase to unlock !

At this point I am thinking of complaining to ACCC !
