  • Was the starter packs still 12 months deadline to activate before expiry?

    • +2

When you say "the" be more specific as there are various sim starter packs listed here.

      • +2

Oh sorry i thought it was all the same expiry.

I was referring to the $50 for $18. Thanks

        • All good. Actually, now I think of it you may be right that all the Amaysim sim starter packs have same expiry

(not sure about Belong though), because Amaysim Sims I think do not expire as I remeber. Could be changed

now though as been a while since I used them.

          • +1

            @ozhunter68: Cool thanks

            • @ATTS: in line with credit having a 12mth expiry, starter packs remain valid for 12mths after purchase - as printed on them, "Activate SIM within 12 months of purchase."

  • +9

Just FYI on the topic of Amaysim, if you are using their PAYG plan to keep a number and adding $10 credit a year but noticed they've upped the min to $15 online, you can still get slightly cheaper by buying a credit voucher at Woolies.

Smallest they sell is $12 but you can pay with your discounted Woolies gift cards. I assume you can probably do the same at Big W and use a 5% discounted card vs Woolies 4% (was on my last day before old credit expired so Woolies was the closer option, not worth it for the 12c difference :D)

    • +1

That's great @bamzero. I always wondered about the old school recharge vouchers. Australia Post sells them too.

      • +1

Be good to know if AusPost min is $12 too. I don't really use the credit much but collected a bit over the years from referrals so don't want it to disappear. Just need the bare minimum to extend it another 12 months.

        • +5

sorry, you have credit from referrals that you don't really use much, but rather spend $12 to save $3 instead of using it?

apparently $10 vouchers are available, also have you tried TOP10?

          • +1

@tonester: The credit expires after 12 months but is extended another 12 if you add credit.

I looked at it as a $10 yearly plan, so was happy to spend that to keep the number active and keep the existing credit. Don't want to lose the number because it's flat hundreds like 04xx 100 200 (got it from an Optus data SIM years back so ported it to the cheapest long life plan I could find at the time)

Not sure how long Amaysims retention for numbers without credit is.

Good to know about the txt top-up tho, hopefully still an option in 12 months time

            • +1

              @bamzero:

The credit expires after 12 months but is extended another 12 if you add credit.

also upon any recharge (such as using existing credit to do so), all (remaining) credit then expires in a year

              As You Go (PAYG)

              • @tonester: Are we not saying the same thing? When I add credit/recharge my existing credit is extended for another year

(oh additional 12 months from recharge date, not saying 12 months on top of any existing expiry period if that's what you thought I meant.. I recharge on the last day so same same for me.)

                • @bamzero: if you use your referral credit to recharge, all remaining credit expires in a year from then

                  • @tonester: Ah. Yeh when I received referral credit it extended my expiry. Haven't had any in the last year (or two) though unfortunately.

                    • @bamzero: you haven’t received any recently, but still have some remaining?

                      • @tonester: Yep because I recharge $10 whenever the credit is due to expire to keep it going another 12 months.
Looking back it has been some years actually, but there was a good 3 years where referral credit alone kept the account active.

Thinking about it now, no more referral credit because Amaysim changed the system a while back so now you can only refer if you are on an Unlimited plan with auto-renew turned on :/

                        • +1

                          @bamzero:

Yep because I recharge $10 whenever the credit is due to expire to keep it going another 12 months.

so again, why not just use your credit to recharge, instead of buying vouchers?

                          • @tonester: I still don't know what you're talking about so I'm starting to think the referral system works differently now from what it used to be.

Back when I could refer, I'd get credit automatically applied to my account. It wasn't a voucher or anything I could choose up redeem.

                            • @bamzero: there are two ways to recharge prepaid plans:

                              • voucher
                              • credit

why buy voucher when you already have credit?

                              • @tonester: You still have me at a loss. I was receiving referral credit which they automatically applied to my number each time. Like all my credit that would still expire after 12 months, unless I got another referral which they would again automatically apply or added a voucher/bought credit to extend it another 12 months.

                                • @bamzero: sorry, just realised that as you're on PAYG, there's actually nothing to recharge being $0/mth, unlike with Unlimited plans, hence to extend credit expiry, must either add credit or buy voucher :)

                                  • @tonester: I feel we are going in circles here..

There was no referral credit to recharge with. The referral credit was already on my account and going to expire. The only way to extend the expiry was add more credit, which I did by using a voucher this time.

                                    • @bamzero: You can use $10 of your credit to buy the 7 day 10GB plan and that will extend your expiry by another 365 days without adding new money.

So if you buy the plan 364 days after topping up, the top up of $10 (if still possible with voucher / by SMS) can last for 2 years

                                  • @tonester: all good, but now my previous reply seems out of context because I hit reply then left for a bit and your comment changed :D

    • +2

Sorry noob q, are you saying need to top up min $15 per year to keep payg active?

      • +1

Technically yes, well any credit amount, though if your credit expires or is used up the number will remain active for incoming for a while.

I have another number I had to buy as a monthly plan to get the Moto G54 deal, then converted to PAYG after the month was up without adding any credit. That was around July/August last year and the number still works to receive calls and txts.

Just did a bit of a search and apparently number will remain active for 455 days after last recharge. My second number has an expiry date of 23/9 in the app, assuming 2024 that's 444 days ago. So I'll see if it stops working in two weeks.

        • +1

TX for this. I hardly make calls but renew my $99 prepaid with Amaysim every. From your explanation it may be more cost effective to just add some credit each year to keep my number for incoming calls.

          • @Rebsphere: It would most definitely be more cost effective to go the PAYG route assuming you're just trying to park a number, because even if $99 is what you pay per year, that's at least 6x more than necessary, assuming you compare that to "just" paying $15 per year

          Where did you see that?

I don't know the exact # of days but I have noticed that for Unlimited 32/42GB prepaid plans, the number terminates around 1 yr and 2 mths after the plan expires

You'll also get I believe two emails notifying you of an impending number termination. The first, ~10 days before it's to be terminated, and the second and final one, about 24hrs before the number gets terminated

          • @illumination: It's in the SFOA (and Googles AI summarised)

"If you are a Pre-paid Mobile customer, the Service will be automatically cancelled if more than 455 (356 days credit validity and 90 days passive period) days have passed since your last recharge of Airtime Credit."

            • @bamzero: Ah. Solid source. Ok. It seems to roughly match up with what I shared then, because I suppose if the day you purchase an Unlimited 32/42GB 28-day plan is day 1, then you count 444 days from that and you should be able to match that to what you shared.

    • +1

I bought a $10 from the Woolies checkout on December 1. When redeeming it asked if I wanted to use it for 10GB of data or $10 of PAYG credit that would expire in a year.

      VOUCHER OPTIONS
You've purchased a $10.00 recharge. How would you like to apply this voucher?

$10 Credit As you go Or to buy plans and data. Expires after 365 days.

      $10/7 days 10GB/7 days

      • Ok good to know. I just asked at the service counter and she said $12 was minimum, think that was Nov 27 or 28. Maybe she just got it wrong

        • +2

Oh I don't talk to people!
On the self serve checkouts you pick 'recharge' then Amaysim and then it gives you denominations to choose from :)

          • @rpb: Ohhh.. noted. New to recharge vouchers if you hadn't noticed :D Learning for next time.

So really they are just trying to get an extra $5 out of the ppl like me who normally recharge online.

            • @bamzero: Well it's probably just a loophole they've missed.
              Note the expiry emails say:
"Your $xx.xx remaining credit expires on 04-Dec-25. You can avoid any hassles or disruptions by recharging your service now.
If you would like to keep your mobile number 04xxyyyzzz, simply recharge with $15 in your amaysim account and you will keep your number for another 365 days!"
And the PAYG 'starter kit' is now $15.
And you cant activate a store bought SIM kit on PAYG anymore.
              :(
On one of my others I did a BPay $10 and it extended for 365 days but that was a risk. Someone else here said it worked so I have it a try.

I thought maybe they needed time for the $10 vouchers that people had bought before the change to expire. The voucher I bought says expires 30/04/2026 so that might be the end of it.

              • @rpb:

And you cant activate a store bought SIM kit on PAYG anymore.

If the method linked in the OP doesn't work (I haven't tried), you should be able to use the website (not app) to buy the $10 plan and get the remainder as credit. Not as good as getting the whole amount on PAYG but still something.

                • +2

@surfingedge: On 21 Nov I tried to activate a store bought SIM kit ($35 for $12) on PAYG on the web. The PAYG option was not there anymore but yes the "buy the $10 plan and get the remainder as credit" looked the only way forward. (And to be honest I'm never going to use all the credit as it's just to keep a number alive for a year)

So I got on chat and pushed.
Response: "To answer your question, unfortunately, amaysim already stopped putting PAYG plan on starter packs last 3 September 2025."

They did offer that if I activated a PAYG they would apply the value of the SIM starter pack as credit: "We will need the copy of receipt and the SIM pack to be send to validate@amaysim.com.au for proof of purchase".

However that meant they wanted me to order a PAYG on the website for $15 and then apply the SIM starter pack credit on top. I only wanted to spend $12 (because I couldn't start with $10 anymore) not $15, that why I bought the $12 pack. So I pushed and they got me to activate it on the appropriate plan and then they would apply the value of the pack as credit (without proof of purchase) "as once off".

So in the end I got a month of service (which I actually have used a little data of) and $35 worth of PAYG credit (that I'll never use).

Next time I'll just do Lebara $10. https://www.lebara.com.au/support/standard-plan/
Hopefully they don't raise their price. Ive probably jinxed it now.

                  • @rpb: OK, thanks for the info. I guess if you wanted to, you could use the credit to buy the $10 plan once a year, which would keep the number alive for 3 more years without spending any more real money (and get 10GB for a week each time)

                    • @surfingedge: hmm, I wonder. I guess that's what others are referring to "all credit is valid for up to 365 days, but is automatically reset for another 365 days upon any recharge/purchase". The "recharge" in "recharge/purchase" is the important bit there.
So use $10 of my $35 credit next Nov 20 and see what happens.

            • +1

@bamzero: fyi both woolworths and coles apps show $10 recharge vouchers :)

    • I'm surprised no one has suggested buying discounted $35 Amaysim starter kits when they're on sale for $10/12 and using them as recharge vouchers.

Although, it's not official policy, you hit them up on live chat and you ask them to convert the starter kit credit ($35, which you paid $10 or $12 for) into PAYG credit, which you could either use to recharge it onto a regular 28/90/365 day plan, or use as PAYG.

In my experience, they typically tell you that "we'll do this as a one-time courtesy" though - so probably not something scalable if you're trying to accumulate a mass of credit

      • Have you done this multiple times despite them telling you it's a one-off every time?

        • I've done it twice (a few months apart)

And my friend has done it (according to him) about 4 times and "every time they say it's done as a one-time courtesy"

  • Office works doesn’t price match prepaid sims anymore

  • Does the $99 one count as a starter pack where you can use the credit on any plan, or are you locked into the 90-day 120GB plan?

  • can i buy 30$ starter package and activate as PAYAG?

  • +1

can the $1 sim card be used to port in and port out ?

  • +1

Can you use the $1 sim to buy one of those phones in the previous post…

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/939522

  • I bought the $35-75GB pack for $12.

  • I bought the $30 Starter Pack a few months back and went to activate it today as PAYG. The option is no longer available on the website as mentioned above and in previous Ozb deal.

I had to call them up after activating the 32Gb/28-day plan and get them to manually change it to the 365 day plan, but it shows up as "Talk & Text Only" for 365 days with $30 credit. Is this the right plan or did they stuff it up as there's no data included? Should it appear as "As You Go" in the app?

    @rpb @trixieb @tonester

    • +1

@dorikin That would be the PAYG option. Initially mine also showed up as "Talk & Text Only" for 365 days with $30 credit. Amaysim told me it shows "As You Go" at their end. It has recently changed by itself to "As You Go" in my app.

The data is in your link: (It's only for very light data use.)

Data charged at 5c/1MB or $51.20/1GB. Pay $15 for AYG plan. 365 day expiry.

      • thanks for the info. your comment want here when I replied.

      • Thanks for confirming trixieb

It does show as Talk & Text only with no data, but as you said it sounds like I just have to wait until it updates itself in the app.

        • +1

@dorikin I was able to use the SIM for data when it was "Talk & Text Only" in my app. I spoke to a few amaysim agents who assured me that it shows "As You Go" at their end. Somehow it changed recently to "As You Go".

    • Interesting. The "Talk & Text Only" plan is the one we have Nana on. It's $60 a year for Unlimited calls and text only. So I'd say you scored!
I think that plan is weird though, but I'm not sure, in that it doesn't give you any data capability - it's like disabled at network level. So the $30 credit you have doesn't get used for PAYG data, you just don't have data. I'm sure I've read though that you can add a 1GB data pack for $10 and it stays valid as long as the "Talk & Text Only" plan is valid, but I've never done that for Nana.
Would love to hear how you go and if others have any comment.

      • I don't think it's Unlimited at all, when I click on "Plan Details" it shows as 12c/min standard calls and 12c/standard SMS, Data "Not applicable. To use data, change your plan"

        • yeah @trixieb explanation is much more believable

  • Folks, if I get the $50 or $30, assuming it's valid for 28 days, how much will it cost at time of renewal please?
I don't see that information anywhere.
$12 for the first month, then how much after?

    • renewal price will be the same as the value of the starter pack - assuming that one signs up to its corresponding plan - so $30 for the $30 pack which costs $12

      • Thanks for confirming, cheers!
