Because.

Cheap.

As a time keeping device, it is a bad watch. As a health monitoring device for super old or sickly people it is super great especially for delaying death. For sports / exercise data junkies, it is mid / decent.

46mm here. https://www.costco.com.au/Electronics/Smart-Watches/Apple-Wa…

As a time keeping device, it is a bad watch.

    Eh why?

    • +10

Cause you have to charge it

      • And it’s ugly AF.

    • +3

Battery life is 18-24h without low power mode. Equivalent quartz sports watch would be indefinite with solar charging (at least I think)

      • +10

oh I thought there was some revelation about time being inaccurate on these things.

I guess my laptop is a bad computing device too

      • +1

Yea but your quartz watch tells time and nothing else.

        • and probably the most important use case for a watch

          • @00: Which the Apple Watch does, people whinging about charging it must not sleep.

    • +2

Because every time you check the time it shows you alerts instead

      • +4

Some time in the last decade Apple actually allowed you to configure what notifications you receive on your device, worth checking out

        • I don’t mind the alert, it’s the fact that it obscures the time when you lift your wrist to show you an alert, while its primary function is to show the time. Especially those animated badges that won’t go away.

    • +1

Because when I went to check the time it was restarting to apply the latest software update.

      • it only does software updates when charging, nice try

  • +4

Amazon is selling 46mm at $597 if you don’t have Costco membership

  • +14

I mostly like it because notifications can go to it. I haven't heard my phone's notification or ringing sound in many years, just get the gentle tap on the wrist. It is nice too that the watch tells me how fat and lazy I am.

Just “mid/decent” for sports and exercise.. okay Bryan Johnson

I don't like Apple but I do like delaying death… Quiet the conundrum 🤔

    • +4

      Quite indeed.

      • +2

        Dammit

    • There's always smart-rings and wrist-bands.

    • +1

i get all my sheeple products from the 2nd hand marketplace

Thanks. Wish all ozbargain posts are just like this caption.

  • I wish it was for a series 11 cellular + gps any color choice for this price and or for $400

  • delaying death

    Eh, why?

  • +1

According to the quantified scientist, it's pretty much the best all-round health tracker. Not sure where the 'mid-decent' assertion is coming from

If you prefer a smart watch mainly to track activities and exercises, Garmin is a better brand with longer battery life. Using Apple Watch for exercise, especially extended one like a day hike drastically drains the battery. Source: I have owned 2 different generations of Apple Watch.

      • +1

If you value accuracy in health data, Garmin is not a good choice. If you just care about battery life, sure

        • +1

As mentioned, for accurate health tracking, it's super great. Exercise / fitness tracking it is mid. Other brands like Garmin as the previous comment mentioned are a generation ahead of Apple for fitness / exercise data tracking, especially if you are a full blown fitness freak.

          • +1

@Dollar Dreamer: Exercise tracking falls under the umbrella of health tracking. According to measurements by The Quantified Scientist, the Garmin falls significantly behind the Apple Watch in health tracking accuracy (again, this includes exercise tracking). If you have evidence to the contrary, I'd love to see it. A long battery life does not make a device 'a generation ahead'.

@robinbanks: A single Youtuber is not what I call extensive. If you will only reference a single Youtuber to make up your mind, then might as well just ask AI, at least the AI has all the Youtubers and reviewers content. Garmin is still way ahead of Apple for serious fitness enthusiasts. One of the best description I have read on Garmin vs Apple watch on exercise and fitness is from a Reddit post, 'Garmin makes you hate yourself so that you can strive for the best. Apple Watch gives you a hug after every workout and and kisses you goodnight. You gotta Earn that Thumbs up of approval from Daddy Garmin.'

              • @Dollar Dreamer: He’s an exercise science postdoc and his videos are very thorough. ‘Might as well use ai’ is a complete nonsense statement. If you prefer vibes over accuracy just say so in the first place rather than string me along and then quote a reddit post lol

            • @robinbanks: The Apple Watch is indeed much more accurate than Garmin for general tracking. However, both are useless for tracking your strengh training workouts. Which is why I have been using a Garmin with a chest strap for years. I still rely my Pixel Watch for sleep tracking though, which is just as accurate as the Apple Watch as of late, according to the Quantified Scientist.

Interestingly, this morning my Garmin Fenix 8, Pixel Watch 3 and the Eight Sleep Pod 5 all tracked the same deep sleep from from last night. However, the Garmin and the Pixel had 10 minutes difference in REM sleep detection; however, the Eight Sleep Pod, which is highly regarded by the Quantified Scientist, was off by more than 100% compared to the Garmin and the Pixel. I've only sleept with the Pod for a few nights, so perhaps it's still calibrating.

I can’t understand the appeal of these things with their terrible battery life.
As an example a Garmin MIP watch will do about 2 weeks off a single charge (including tracking a few activities) which is much more practical day-to-day

    • +2

I stream music on my whilst running, take phone calls without carrying my phone, when I am out I can purchase something without getting my wallet out - when I return home I can unlock my front door with it.

    • I can see the appeal of both and wear both a Fenix 8 and a Pixel Watch 3 (I remove the Pixel when I'm going out to avoid looking weird).

The Garmin looks amazing, the battery life is unbeatable and I rely on it for my strengh workouts with the Polar H10 HRM. However, the Pixel Watch sensors and the Fitbit algorithms are better for almost everything else.

The previous Fenix models lacked a lot of the smart watch functionality, but Fenix 8 has significantly narrowed if not closed that gap.

    • which apple watch has the best battery life?

  • FYI 42mm jet black is not available in store in Sydney (46mm is).

    Only $7 more on amazon.

  • Can you not get into Costco with just a gift card anymore?
