Samsung Odyssey OLED G5 27" G50SF QHD 180Hz Gaming Monitor $595.12 Delivered @ PB Tech

600

First deal, be gentle ;-)

On the hunt for an OLED to replace my Acer Predator which is getting a bit long in the tooth, and with an older GPU, QHD fit the bill (downgrading from UWQHD). Came across this on a random Google search. Never ordered from these guys before so let's see how it goes.

Also available on the official Samsung site for $699 ($300 off but that's off Samsung RRP):

    This or the dell
    Alienware 27 280Hz QD-OLED Gaming Monitor - AW2725D* ?

    • -3

This if you don't play competitive FPS type games at high frame rate and or want to save some money. I'm also going to go ahead and assume the Dell/Alienware generally has a better customer service experience if you run into a bad panel or some sort of burn in issue.

I have the 2725DW at 360hz and coming from 165hz, and running competitive shooters at like pretty much that FPS on average makes it a really smooth experience, I don't even have to use VRR or anything like that.

    Oled is really getting cheap

Oath and It's so freaking good. LCD does not compare now

I have a 4k IPS which is only 60Hz due to the technology but the colours are great and can never burn in. I don't need higher than 60FPS but I wonder if anyone has direct experience, is it worth upgrading from an IPS to OLED monitor?
I have an OLED TV which is nice but unsure about upgrading the monitor as well.

Depends on use case and personal preference. Best would be to go in store and take a look.

I have G3223Q used to be popular on ozbargain 32" 4K 144hz IPS.

it's amazing to see prices go down on OLED monitors but I don't feel like I am missing out in any way.

          • -3

@shabaka: That's interesting I didn't know IPS can go up to 144Hz. Impressive!

          • +1

@shabaka: Uhh, you are. I was one of you people, lol
            Trust

Same with tv's LCD its done now

miniLED is the way to go for TV and Monitor. OLED makes more sense on mobile devices (energy efficiency).

I feel like if I’m jumping into oled I’m going to go 4K and save/wait for a good deal

    • +4

But then you need a graphics card that does it justice. If you have one then hooray for you but QHD is the right resolution for me

      • You can always bin down to 1080p, or crop the resolution to 1440p.

        • +3

Why then would I buy a 4K monitor if it costs more?

          • -1

@Gorby: So you don’t have to buy another monitor if you want to go to 4K once you have the hardware for it.

            • +2

              @FujinShu: I'm pretty confident that I won't so I'll save my pennies

            • @FujinShu: The hardware has never really came for a high FPS experience on AAA games at 4K. People have been talking of 4K gaming since the 1080 Ti almost 9 years ago. As hardware gets more powerful games are taking advantage of that hardware and average FPS are more or less staying the same. I'd rather buy a QHD monitor and run a native experience with higher FPS than buy a 4K monitor and run non-native resolutions just in case there is a generational leap in computing (which lets to be honest, with the focus on AI eating up all hardware allocations at present I don't think it's anytime soon).

OLED is going to look good at 1440p just the same. At this price it seems like a good way to get a visual upgrade without having to fork out for a high end GPU.

      • +2

OLED looks great at 800p on the Steam Deck too - all about that DPI and viewing distance

  • +2

    Where is the 32" OLED 4K ????

  • +1

Does OLED or this monitor in particular have protection against things like burn-in? Never had OLED but curious as seems like they're becoming more affordable & I never looked as they seem unforgiving when you 'mis-use' them.

    • +1

Pretty sure every OLED has some form of burn in protection, how effective those are is up for debate.

Honestly just set for your monitor to turn off after 5 mins inactivity and you should be fine, I've ran 1st gen dell OLED till today with no issue.

    • You can’t escape burn in - it will happen just a matter of when

      • Burn in is old tales lie
Every monitor has timer weather LCD or OLED and all OLED have burnt protection

  • Samsung software was really bad. Did they improve?

  • +1

    200 nits brightness?
    Is it typo?

    • +1

That will be a 100% white measurement at max brightness in SDR (and probably sustained 100% white HDR). It's certainly lower than other current QHD QD-OLED panels, which hit 250 nits, but higher than the original lineup, which was around 150 nits.

  • Good to see a price drop but I worry about the burn-in. I have an LG OLED TV (~5 yrs old) and it's got some permanent burn-in even with using pixel refresher reguarly. I've got some good life out of it regardless so not really complaining.. I'm waiting to see movement on mini-led monitors. You take a bit of hit to quality but no burn-in problems.

    • There's none!

  • this or dell or IPS?
