I’ve only played the demo, and is the game just basically you walk around smashing stuff?

  Not really. They chose poorly by making the demo just the first 15 minutes of the game, the simplest, most mindless slice of it. It has you just walking down corridors smashing big piles of junk and that's about it. After that early tutorial section it opens up into a more exploration-oriented platformer with more varied moves and challenges. There's still a lot of smashing stuff, but it's not all you do.
  
  If you've played Super Mario Odyssey, it's very close to that, only Mario got real hairy and he trades his magic hat for magic gloves that can smash everything up. Same gameplay flow and structure, mostly the same mechanics, same kind of level design, same co-op feature where player 2 is a little sidekick, even the same gold and purple coins and stores. If you like Mario Odyssey, you'll probably like this.
