This craps all over the deal I found yesterday (and I'm glad I've been educated by the ozb masses!).

I still haven't bought the one I want because I do want something bigger than the Pixel 9 Pro.. I might have to go for a Samsung if I can't wait for the Pixel's to go on sale.

    • for good price, you'll have to wait until pixel 11 drops, I got pixel 9 pro xl for wifey for 888$ when 10 dropped.

      • +1

i already have optus account, so i got it early release (2 or 3 months after release) of pixel 9 pro xl, i got it for same price as you, november last year.

      • I thought 9 Pro XL should be $999.

    • Correct, to call your post a deal it wasn't .

  • +1

Thanks OP. Was waiting on a price drop on the pixel 9. This is better than the Telstra deal

      • +3

That Telstra deal was crazy, they offered $600 cashback on a trade in as well, ended up getting the pixel 9 pro for a couple hundred.

        • +2

That was the best Pixel 9 pro deal of the year! I got 256GB one about $160, after traded in S21 ultra 512GB

      • Same price?

        No

        • I was referring to P9pro, but obviously person I was replying to was talking about P9.

  • +5

Pixel 9 is an amazing price! Nice find.

  • +1

    Great bargain … thanks OP

  • +2

    That Pixel 9 looks good?

  • JB wouldn’t price match this for the outright device would they?

    • +8

Short answer no; longer more sarcastic answer also ends with no.

      • +8

Actually, I thought the sarcastic answer would end in "yeah, sure"?

        /s

    • JB has been discarded the same way they discarded their port in deals.

  • +13

Pixel 9 Pro looked like a killer deal. But then I realised that was for a 128gb model (still can't believe their pro series doesn't start at 256gb) and that the 256gb model is $949, which really didn't feel like a great deal to me.

    • +8

Same. That Pro one doesn't seem good. The 9 seems good but like I'd rather get a Nothing/Xiaomi for $300 than the Pixel…

      • +4

Still waiting for the Xiaomi 17 Pro to launch in Aus too

      • Which Nothing / Xiaomi phones are $300 and better or similar than the pixel 9?

    • Yea I’d be so uncomfortable with a 128gb nowadays especially if it’s gonna be your main phone.

    • +11

      128 GB is fine

      • +9

        It really isnt now.

My phone has 101GB free (from 256GB), my wifes pixel 10 xl pro has 130GB free (from 256GB)

        • +6

I manage with my 128 gB 8 pro easily. Stream music and videos and occasionally empty phone pics onto hard drive (photos should be backed up regularly anyway)

          • -1

            @belongsinforums: Too. Much. Effort

            • +9

@spy: Takes a few minutes to plug into PC and copy a folder. 10 minutes a year of my time. But you do you

            • +1

              @spy: tme

            • +2

@spy: So you simply don't backup your photos? If you lose you're phone or it dies they're just gone?

              • +1

@xmail: I think most people have automatic backup with services like Google Photos or iCloud. And yes, most think it's too much effort to do some picture cleaning every now and then instead of doomscrolling on their couch, which results in paying a few more hundred dollars for their phones, and spreading their indignation that phone memories start at 128Gb. But as @belongsinforums says, they do them.

                • +3

@Sebajun: Yes they do.. I was just trying to catch him out. It's already backed up.. it's a one button click to "clean photos off my device that are already backed up" once a year to save yourself $150. But hey.. they do they.

                • @Sebajun: Subscription service for cloud storage is against OzB spirit unless it's free. :)

                  • @megadeth: So OzB spirit is paying $300 more for double the memory instead of paying $20 / year for cloud storage? :p

          • +1

@belongsinforums: Photos and video do get backed up to mulitple places. Still want them on the phone though.

            • -1

              @PVA: Weird flex but ok

            • -1

@PVA: Sounds like you need better plan or wifi if you can't let the app download photos that you need on demand.

              • @xmail: Thats a pain in the outback when you have no coverage.
I dont want to download on demand even though my plan would allow it. I also have tv shows downloaded to watch on flights.

I dont have an issue but seems you are really teying to prove 128 is fine.

        • +5

          I've got a pixel 8 128Gb with 30GB left, and that's with 15GB of netflix storage used. i.e. I have 45GB.
It depends on your usage, but for some of us 128GB is still fine.

        • I think the options for 256GB seem a bit limited - especialy good deals.

        • Not sure..

Install what you need. 128GB seems alright for that price.

      • Mines a 512GB, i have 28GB free :( i so wish we still had SD

        • Moto g54.. I have with a 512gb sd. I like it.

        • There's no money in it for the phone manufactuer when you use an SD card.

  • +10

How does this work if I'm not an existing customer. Get one with 1 month prepaid, cancel sim after a day or two then use my existing lebara sim?

    • +3
    • +6

Yes that's correct, I found this $10 plan as the cheapest available. Managed to setup an account and purchase the Pixel 9 outright.

      • Nice

      • Hey Mugz, I setup account on that $10 plan and it won't let me purchase the phone. It has that number greyed out when selecting existing account.

        Any hints?

        • Have you gone through the steps and activated the new number? I had to activate the eSim on my current phone, allowing the account setup to complete.
Try that first, and see if it works?

          • +1

@Mugz: Yeah, this is what I just did in order to be able to choose to purchase the phone.

          • +2

@Mugz: Thanks. I think I stuffed up by ordering a physical sim.

            Appreciate your response.

            • @chewbot: anyway to do this with a physical sim? My current phone doesn't have esim and I want to keep my same number

              • @Mistyxo: I actually got my physical sim in less than 24 hours, but in the meantime changed my mind about the phone. Grr lol.

But my understanding is that you could do it with a physical sim from amaysim and hope it gets delivered quickly or get one from a retail outlet. There are other comments that have done it.

      • +1

Got one for the wife's Christmas present. Thanks for the tip!

  • +5

Is there a better camera system/quality for under $500 than the pixel 9 here? I don't think so. Awesome deal.

  • suggeting the 10 series is not worth the upgrade

IIRC, I read that Google made a fundamental change in the Tensor chip for Pixel 10 series - to improve battery life and reduce over-heating, I think.

Pixel 9 price is great compared to the $350 I paid for the Pixel 7 Pro that I haven't started using yet.

    • +6

improve battery life and reduce over-heating

yes, but in practice it's like improving from 2017 to 2018 level. still laughable vs modern competition, and not worth paying double for.

      • 100% this. The 10 is the "tock" in Intels "tick tock" architecture.

    • +2

Not fundamental. They moved their node from Samsung to TSMC - there is basically no performance difference between G4 and G5, mainly efficiency from the more advanced node.

In summary - the 10 is not really worth it. The 9 is better value at prices we are seeing given there is barely 10% performance difference between G4 and G5. The G5 is the 'reset' year, we should see better performance uplift from G6 onwards.

      • The 10 will also limit your total battery capacity after 200 cycles.

        • =O

        • Orwellian that's crap

          • @mousie: Instead of using better quality batteries they just cap you now via software to save on costs.

    • +1

As someone that owned a Pixel 9 Pro Fold and 10 Pro, no there was basically no real improvement in battery life or heat.

  • +16

    FYI

You can activate a $12 discount Sim (esim if you want to get this deal instantly) deal then buy the phone for the deal price (select "Use an existing amaysim plan").

  • +14

For those who aren't currently amaysim customers, you can save $18 on the cost of the plan by buying the $35 plan first as an eSIM as it is currently discounted to $12. Once you've purchased this, you can then purchase the phone you're after as a second transaction. Credits to @HomeAlone (original details here)

Remember to turn off auto-renew and remove your payment details afterwards so you don't get charged for any subsequent months on the plan

    • I forgot to turn off auto-renew, but was able to score the refund for the monthly recharge with a request made to their chat support. I never used their esim anyway.

      • Wait, if you never used it how did it expire?
Or did you still activate it first?

    • +1

cant you can also just get 7 days $10 plan if you are not going to use the sim.. $2 cheaper.. ? or it wont work on that plan?

    • This is cheaper although you could argue the extra $2 could be worth paying for the additional validity/data

    • +4

Thanks for this. I just bought the Pro9 after setting up the $12.00 eSIM. 128gb is fine for me, I don't game and I don't store music or video. My current 128gb phone (Pixel4a!) still has 72gb of storage left.

    • when the phone arrives, can you switch your current sim over to it (from another carrier)?

      • Yes, the eSIM plan isn't associated with the phone at all. The plan is only needed in order to become an 'existing' customer so you can then buy the phone. Once you receive the phone you can use whatever service you wish.

  • lmao good deal

  • Won't work on any plan cheaper than the $30/32GB plan (e.g. as you go, short-term plan etc.). But you can grab the 75GB for $12 and it works out $511 with a plan (grabbed one myself).

  • +4

Pixel 9 crazy price , even cheaper than the 9a

  • @Mick83 this feels like a deal made for you!

  • +2

I am debating if I should wait for Samsung S26 next month. It will be latest gen phone with 256GB and cost about $500-$600 with promo codes?

    • Is the S26 really going to be that cheap at launch?

    • I'm in the same boat. $650 is a damn cheap deal for the Pixel 9, with very little change between that and the 10 supposedly.
But S26 is only about a month away from being announced, right?
What makes you think it will be ~$600 on sale close to launch day?

  • +1

Looks like $511 is the new ATL for the Pixel 9 128gb version (with the $12 sim workaround)

  • +1

Thanks OP, cracker deal, purchased the pixel 9 for only $499 as already on Amaysim 12 month prepaid :)

  • oh man, i want the xiaomi pro 17 global release early next year (on pixel 7 rn which batteries fell off a cliff) but this pixel 9 price is too good. hard decision to pull rn…

    • +2

      HODL

    • Just get the 9 now. You'll be happy with it

    • I got a vivo x200 pro with a silicon carbon battery in February. I get a full day of life and still at 99% battery health. Absolute game changer.

See if you can wait. Could get a power bank to take around with you in the meantime.

      • Did you buy in Australia or overseas?

        • Grey import through bestmobilephone.com.au

  • Thanks OP. I just ordered a $10 sim. Do these deals last long enough for it to arrive, activate etc? thanks

    • should hve grabbed $2 in store

      • gee that helps a lot

        • So I went out and bought a $2 card. It only sets me up to purchase a plan or transfer from an existing SIM. Seems like I wasted $2 or am I missing something

          • @Mickyboy: did you manage to figure it out?
the $2 card to do PAYG from coles etc doesn't work?

            • +1

@SeVeN11: Needs to be a prepaid plan. PAYG does not work.

              • @90percent: Eventually I bought the plan online. Good news is that the phone is due today!

  • -1

    Would apple price match this?

  • +5

If it's a useful feature for anyone, Pixel 10 and newer allows airdropping with Apple users!
