  • Point devaluation has been around for a long time

  • I wouldn't have renewed if I knew they were they were going to discount the earn rate 4 months into a12 month membership.

Other cinemas to go to instead but way to burn a loyalty ̶s̶c̶h̶e̶m̶e̶ ̶scam to the ground.

  • never been to cinema since pre-covid…

    • since pre-covid…

      When did pre-covid begin? 300 BC ?

      • since pre-covid

        not

        since the start of pre-covid

        • What's the difference?

          • @jv: pre-covid is vague. it could be 2019, 2018, 2017, …. etc

start of pre-covid would be a definite point in time (allthough I'm not sure what it is) something like 4000 BC or maybe the big bang?

            • @tenpercent:

              or 300 BC.

              • @jv: yes it could be for your context

            • @tenpercent:

              or maybe the big bang?

What about before the big bang?

    • Seats are much more comfortable than pre-COVID

    • That's insane

      • You have never experienced the new IMAX Sydney.
      • You have never experienced modern 4DX at Event Cinemas.
      • You have never experienced OLED at Hoyts ONYX.
      • You have never experienced The Batman (2022) and its legendary batmobile audio in theatres..
      • You have never experienced Avatar: The Way of Water in theatres..

      That's insane

    Shareholder value….

  • considering it cost like 13cents to make a bucket of popcorn you would think they would be doing everything possible to get you to go up to the candy bar in the hope you redeem your points but then buy something else

Feel like the Cinema Industry needs a Uber Style shake up - or the blockbuster treatment with home entertainment coming close to mirrioring the Cinema experience at a 'fraction' of the price and more and more film companies making their own content ie Netflix, Disney etc the Industry needs to think outside the box

Personally think it is a dying industry with the 'large scale' high demand commerical space resulting in 'very' high over heads i can't see how the industry can sustain more and more price rises and reduced consumer value before the bulk of the population just say 'f—k it' this is too expensive

    • needs a Uber Style shake up

How is that a good thing?

      • For a 'long time' the Taxi industy was poorly run but essentially had a stranglehold on the industry Uber came in and added afar superior product at a lower price

the Cinema industry needs something to come shake up the experience adding more entertainment for less - otherwise i reckon the industry will die like Blockbuster just outdated

        • Uber came and operated illegally and got in via some under the table deals with the government…

Now we are left with surge pricing and taxi drivers refusing fares because they don't want to use the meter and illegally charging flagfall fares of $30+ at the airport and nobody does anything about it because they no longer have a taxi license to lose.

          • @jv:

Uber came and operated illegally and got in via some under the table deals with the government…

Uber started in USA in California….

there had shaken up the taxi industry well before it hit Australia.

Just like AI, Nuclear Energy and driverless taxis are shaking the world up now, Australia just tend to lag behind…

            • @Checkmate3023:

              before it hit Australia.

and operated here for a long time illegally.

and operated here for a long time illegall.

this isn't the point but nothing you have said is incorrect my point is the Cinema Industry is becoming out-date non-cost competitive and needs innovation

                • @Checkmate3023:

                  this isn't the point

                  Of course it is…

"Uber broke laws, duped police and secretly lobbied governments"

I wonder what Dan got out of it ????

                  • @jv:

"Uber broke laws, duped police and secretly lobbied governments"

In Australia the point im making it Cinema needs to change Uber changed the Taxi industry in the states

I wonder what Dan got out of it ????

The Government shafted taxi licence holders but almost No backlash from the Public because the industry was so poorly run - in Victoria you gotta blame Dan Andrews as he used it to score political points opposed to up hold the law as the hard left love to tear down anyone who has worked hard to invest in something

Half a million dollar Taxi Licences were almost worthless thanks to Uber - do i agree with what happen? No? but it is still case in point industries need to change/adapt or they will die you cant expect the 'government' to protect you (or compensate you) esp corrupt ones and Vic ALP is the worse, most evil and corrupt government you will ever see

            • @Checkmate3023:

Just like AI, Nuclear Energy and driverless taxis are shaking the world up now,

AI is shaking the world up, in the same way tech bubbles always do. It'll pop and then people will start using it like regular technology. Much like "the cloud", it'll wind up being used for agentic process automation and 20 years from now we'll still be talking about AGI being just around the corner.

The world produced less nuclear energy last year than it did 20 years ago. Even Musk is trash talking small reactors these days.

Driverless taxis cost 8 times more than regular taxis to run and run at a loss, despite the cost savings of not having a human behind a wheel.

You seem to have a real thing for hype over intangible goods. Uber's real achievement was realising you could pay people like pizza delivery drivers to ferry other people around.

    • Your comment is actually 15 years too late. Everything you said happened then. But then movie goers experienced Avatar and realised nothing replaces the spectacle, atmosphere and social aspects of the Cinema.

Netflix et al seemingly are like Kryptonite to the Cinema industry but nope they've realised launching their content on Cinema is a marketing platform and reaches an audience outside of their subscribers.

As population continues to increase in density around the suburbs the shopping centres are getting more popular and are looking for entertainment experiences. So we are entering a phase where Cinema is becomming an anchor tenant again.

      • Cinema is becomming an anchor tenant again.

Not when it costs around $100 for a family of four just to watch a movie…

        • Between discounted gift cards and movie tix from various sources, I've never paid more than $35 for 2 adults for a movie at Hoyts.

          • @Trekky: I just checked at our local hoyts… Standard adult ticket is $28.50, so $114 for family of four with teenage kids.

      • I don't care for the cinema but this is true. Cinema nearly died, and it's been coming back the last few years.

  • help us maintain and continue developing the value

How is reducing the points continuing to develop the value?

Hahaha, read it slowly … "help us" "developing the value" (for us, not the customer - nowhere is value tied to the customer in any of the statements)

    aka: typical corporate speak ;)

  • "Help us"

    Reading comprehension.

  • Probably because their customer service has always been horrendous. They can’t even send you an email when your “VIP” membership expires.

    • I get an email when mine does and so does my nephew and it's usually around a month before.

      • Ah okay good to know, must have gone to spam. Don’t know why they can’t just allow customers to setup a direct debit?!?!

  • The police seem to be doing really well also, they're getting around in BMWs these days
