Who'll be first to calculate max profit available….

    • $5 x 5 = $25 ($100 yield most "profit")

    • -2

Who'll be the first to tell the calculation really doesn't matter if you convert flybuys to velocity and redeem on business class flights?

      • +3

As if people from OzB fly business class lol

        • +2

What else do they do with all these bonus points? You'll be surprised.

          • -1

@Oh Daddy: Yesterday, I spent 10k points on kids snacks lol like chips and crap

            • +1

@sqheaven: could have taken them to MEL-Sydney in that cost

              • @Oh Daddy: That's interesting, I'll not waste points now. Do you mean, convert to airline points like velocity and book a flight?

                • @sqheaven: Last night I booked MEL - Brisbane for 8900 probably that's less than what your snacks would have coated.

                  Correct velocity

                  • @Oh Daddy: That sucks man, I feel bad as an OzB member

                    • @sqheaven: That's exactly what mose OZB members do, use points to pay for non flight items.

                  • @Oh Daddy: what's the conversion rate from Flybuys to Velocity? Dont you also need to pay for taxes?

                    • @cheap4321: 2:1 and unpaid $42 in taxes.

My booked tickets were 250 in cash, i paid 8900 + 42 which if spent on snacks will get you 131 worth.

                      • @Oh Daddy: Was it 8900 velocity points, so 17,800 FB points needed?

              • @Oh Daddy: lol, this is exactly what i do with my FlyBuy points. Great value imo.

            • +1

@sqheaven: Sorry to tell you but the best way to get value from points is to spend on flights. You get a far better $ redemption rate per point.

              • @Tommyaka: True, I have converted the remaining 22k points to velocity. Learned my lessons. Thanks a lot!!!!

  • Here we go again!! Useful to have for remaining last min Christmas shopping!

Also in that thread: mixed reports that these cards no longer work for ATO payments. So unless someone can confirm that they still work, be warned that the ATO may no longer accept them.

      • I really hope this isn’t true; it worked perfectly during my last run in November.

        • +2

Coles Mastercard gift cards cannot be used to pay ATO online but it may or (may not) work over the phone. More info here.

          • +3

@trixieb: The update on that website on 9/12 say ATO do still accept them.

            Update
In an email to GCDB, the ATO claimed that it is still possible to make payments with prepaid gift cards:

If the pre-paid card is registered, you should use the details that are registered with the card. If the pre-paid card is not registered, you should use your details provided to the ATO.
When we asked the ATO why payments from Coles Mastercard gift cards were still being rejected even when entering our own details, the response they gave seemed to contradict their earlier advice:

People should check with the gift card issuer what billing details they should be using for online payments.
We have reached out to the issuer of Coles/Vanilla prepaid gift cards to see if there is anything that can be done to allow payments to the ATO but have yet to hear back.

            • @Slo20: Will check with @VantageXL who posted the offer on GCDB today with this statement:

However, if you’re planning to use them to pay taxes you should know that they can no longer be used on the ATO website, although they may still work for phone payments.

            • +4

@Slo20: The ATO claim that they still accept prepaid gift cards for online payments but the fact is that they stopped working as soon as they upgraded their payment system and haven’t worked since.

Make of that what you will.

              • @VantageXL: Thanks VantageXL. ATO haven't tested.

              • @VantageXL: I used a bunch of prepaid cards on the ATO site last week no problems. These were the type that you need to register. One of them required an SMS code, the other one didn't. Looks like the verification is done on the issuer's end and if they wanted to, could accept any name, address and phone number just like when you add a prepaid card to a mobile wallet.

                • +1

@JIMB0: Certain prepaid cards will work but the issue is that the ATO told me that "If the pre-paid card is not registered, you should use your details provided to the ATO" which clearly doesn't work with the Vanilla/Coles gift cards.

I tried getting a comment from InComm but they neglected to respond. Maybe if a lot of OzBargainers kick up a fuss they'll do something about it. After all, it seems to have done the trick in the past.

                  • @VantageXL: It's pretty obvious that the issuer is blocking them. Maybe now we'll see a return of the 10% off deals, they seemed to stop after the last time people twisted their arm into accepting them at the ATO again.

                    • @JIMB0:

Maybe now we'll see a return of the 10% off deals

That would definitely be a nice silver lining.

                • @JIMB0: You can use them on pay.com.au - register the prepaid Mastercard and then pay ATO. You will have to pay $1.20 fee on pay.com.au but if you buy these with the HSBC transaction account you can get the cards 2%

      • +3

Tried ATO last week. Not working on ATO anymore.

        • -1

Can you test again next week just to be sure?

        • I did too. Not only did it not work, but it also caused my card to be locked, according to card support.

      • +2

I used 4 * $250 digital Coles prepaid Mastercards I bought a few months ago last Sunday over the phone. I couldn’t use any of them via the online payment portal.

        • so it can pay ato via phone ,but cant via the online payment portal?

    • +2

Risk is higher in Victoria than in other states.

      • Why?

        • +3

i'm assuming you haven't visited Victoria, lol.

  • No more ato payment ?

  • Since they can't be used for ATO, pointless for me now

  • Wonder if the spend restriction on the Category Choice Groceries card will get put back just in time for these?

I used 2 × $250 no problems last week on Luxury Escapes cards at Woolworths, consecutive transactions at the same self service terminal.

    • +1

There was a 10 minute wait for $280 per payment terminal according to comments here and here in last offer.

      • It seems 280 no longer works, but 270 went through. Not sure if it is a dynamic thing or what. $210 should be safe.

    • I was able to buy 1x $250 without issues.

  • Do they still work for council rates payment?

    • +1

Yes it does, i used Australia Post BillPay online to pay Council rates in NSW.

      • Do you divide the single payment into multiple $250 payments?

        • Yes i did, but i believe there is a limit of number of payments to the same biller each day.

    • Yes. I paid my December rates with $100 debit cards last month.

    • +1

It depends on whether the payment options available accept Coles Mastercard gift cards. For example:

      • If Post Billpay is an option, it will depend on whether the council accepts Mastercard payments through the Post Billpay service (e.g. City of Melbourne does not). Additionally, if you are in-store at Australia Post, it will depend on whether the staff member will allow payments from a prepaid gift card. Some staff will not care, but others definitely will care.

      • If BPAY is an option, you can try to use a BPAY payment service (e.g. Sniip), but it will then depend on whether the council accepts a prepaid card as a payment method (e.g. not all merchants on Sniip accept prepaid cards).

      • If BPOINT is an option, it may work.

      • If Payble is an option, it probably will not work.

      • If the council allows you to pay in-person at the council offices, it will depend on whether their EFTPOS terminal will accept swipe payments from prepaid Mastercard gift cards.

If you need to make a payment larger than the available balance of your Coles Mastercard gift card, it would then depend on whether split payments can be accommodated.

      • +1

I pay rates to three councils in Victoria and, luckily, have been able to use these cards directly with all of them.

      • Trying to pay water bills in BPOINT but it doesn't allow to choose amount to pay hence cannot do split payment. I guess I'm out of luck?

        • You may be out of luck, as I have no idea what will happen if you pay an amount lower than what your water utility company is expecting (or you do multiple payments). Maybe the water utility can reconcile multiple payments against your account during the current billing period, maybe it will only process the first payment and be unable to correctly process further payments during the current billing period?

When I paid for my car rego in-person at Australia Post a while ago, I had to do two separate transactions, because the staff member incorrectly entered a lower amount for the 12 month renewal option. The first transaction was processed fine and my car rego was actually renewed for 12 months, but the funds from the second transaction ended up in a holding account, and there was a whole administrative process I had to go through to get the funds back.

          • @WookieMonster: So you can get rego cheaper just by entering a lower amount?

            • +1

@JIMB0: It was only a couple of dollars lower (approximately a 0.2% discount), but I guess a saving is a saving.

When I was going through the process to get the funds back, the rep helping me was surprised the first transaction even triggered a full 12 month renewal, as they thought the rego would have been renewed for six months, and leftover funds from the first transaction would go into the same holding account as the funds from the second transaction.

  • If only i can find it then

    • -1

There has been absolute no shortage in the last 6 months

      • +3

That isn't true in the ACT. In the last promotion I went to the 3 local Coles stotes each day and they had none. I ended up asking if they had any behind the counter and was told they had sold their entire stock the first morning of the promo.

        • -5

That's why you hide them in the freezer before it goes on sale.

        • …to the staff if something I saw close to opening one morning was an indication 😀 still…good on them…a quick 5% 😁

  • can this card still be used for DEFT?

  • ATO PAYG bills are due end of January, so it's a pity these cards no longer work.

I used to use these cards with PayPal, and I assume they can still be used that way. Maybe someone can comment on that.

    • ATO is the main change that I'm aware of. I've used via PayPal recently.

      • Can you elaborate more? So you add these cards in paypal and make the payment via that?

        • My PayPal reply was unrelated to the ATO payment if that is what you're asking.

I've shopped online or pay some bills by adding the card to PayPal.

          • @trixieb: Can we use more than one card on the same transaction on paypal? Thanks

            • +3

@Save 50 Cent: You can split between two cards on PayPal, however it is a feature the merchant needs to enable. For example it works on Post Billpay but not on the Woolworths Gift Card Portal.

  • 50% of the saving goes to fee, pointless now.

    • It's still a 5% discount on a non MCC restricted gift card (bar some limitations explained above).

      • -2

Kinda hitting my lazy bar lol. I only act on ~10% 😂

        • That is great. More cards for people who need them

  • +5

It is high time Coles Mastercard allowed us the ability to register contact details against a card so we can continue to use them to pay the ATO.

  • +1

This is at least the 3rd time this year which is great for council rate energy and water bills

  • yeah your right this is heaps better then the 10% off

  • Long live the days where this deal was good FFFF

  • Anyone want to take a guess as to when a 'nil putchase fee online' promo will be back? (Like vladimpaler I'm sick of trying to chase down the physical cards..)

They're 'useful' to me as NAB finally seems to have worked out a payment I was making on my card was actually a government one…so no more points! :(

  • Curious to hear about the experience of other people who have had activation issues? Was the refund process straight forward in your case?

    • If the card fails to activate at checkout, they usually either try and swap it over to another one that will activate, if that doesn't work then they will refund you back to your card like normal.
If the gift card is tampered with, I haven't experienced a Coles Mastercard being tampered with but I have bought a TCN Eftpos card that was tampered with and Coles was great in my experience with handling it, their "investigation" took about 6 days, and they let get a refund at a different store, as the original store I bought it at was about a 20 hour drive away. (Bought it when I was away)

    • Bought two earlier today- one failed to activate. Had to call supervisor who swapped with another card which activated. Now I wonder if I'll get points for the card that failed to activate?

  • Anyone have any other churn ideas?

You used to be able to buy shopback supermarket gift card and then re-buy or the TCN Grocery GiftCard?

  • Can I buy these using TCN EFTPOS GC?

    • Nobody knows, they might have reintroduced some restrictions. There were recent reports of category choice gift cards occasionally failing to buy the Eftpos cards.

  • Any luck with ATO ? This was my major reason to buy Coles MC now can't think of many places to use as Councill and all other bills are paid.

  • +2

I bought a bunch of these during the last offer in November, one of which was declined when I tried to use it 10 days later because most of the balance was drained on an online games site and at some small business in Texas (USA) two days after I bought it.

No signs of tampering, looks like it was a brute force attack.

Still yet to receive my replacement card. The first time I called, they told me to wait 30 days for a replacement card. Just called again and they told me that it's still being investigated and I should receive a card within another 15 days.

Not confident of getting my money back any time soon. Try and spend these ASAP if you buy them.

  • +2

Offer is from Fri 26 Dec to Tue 30 Dec. Not today.

    • -1

No wonder!!!plenty of stock in store today, unfortunately I bought it already today!!!

      • Well at least you can buy another 5 tomorrow to break even if that comes as any consolation :)

  • Beware of using Gift Cards at ATO. I used to pay ATO using Visa Gift cards. When I tried to pay ATO yesterday using a Visa Gift card, the payment was declined and also the gift card was blocked. Visa Gift Card Customer Service is going to send me a replacement card from US, which will take 30 days .

    • +1

The same thing happened to me. But then they emailed stating that it was now unlocked and could be used. However, when I did use it ( not at ATO) it did not work. Now have to follow up again.

      • +1

Although their Customer Service told me that they will send a replacement card, they actually unblocked the original card instead of sending a replacement. They also advised not to use at ATO. When I did a balance enquiry, it says the card is active. I will try to use it tomorrow.

  • +5

Scored a tester this morning, paid tax via phone no dramas! Even $0 processing fee now :) (for gift card only I'm guessing)

    Time to load up!

    • Is there any limit on no. of cards per day ?

  • What a pain… 2 of the 5 failed activation so had to get them swapped over at the service desk

Hopefully the points still come through as I am not sure how it works with failed cards and then reactivating the other 2

    • +5

You should still get the points, on 3 seperate occasions at one store I have had these consistently fail to activate and they usually just refund me and on all the occasions of being refunded I have still got the bonus points.

      • +4

Best case scenario is getting all the bonus points for no actual outlay.

  • -1

Unfortunately my local did not put them behind the counter this time so they are all gone 😞
