@davidl222222: I’m out here..missing the joke all together.. I’ll laugh in preparation for an explanation.

            🤣🤣

  • How does this price compare historically ?

  • Would this be suitable to use to back up personal data?

    • +2

Yes but if you aren't using it in nas and just connecting it to your computer, it's probably better value to get a cheaper standard desktop drive instead.

      • Cheaper where?
The cheapest 12TB drive at umart is $464.

  • +2

Are they packaged well or are they placed in an oversized box left to freely slide around?

    • +3

      Bubble mailer if you're lucky

      • Is this how yours were?

    • +3

I've bought 3 WD Reds from Amazon US. All were well packaged. Mounted in a plastic holder to keep the drive in the centre of the box.

    • +2

      The latter, in my case

    • +1

I've had mixed! Once time I got a specific box for a HDD which had a cardboard insert that protected the drive. Without the insert you could have snuggly fit about a dozen drives into that box!

On the other hand, one got delivered in bubble wrap and it was sliding around the place in the box…drive still going ok, so I lucked out!

  • +1

I missed the old days of bulk buys. Nas drives are too pricey these days.

    • +2

Looking at old threads of people buying 6 12TB drives for under 1000 is always really weird

  • Good for a plex drive ? Or something else?

    • Good for almost anything.

For your purpose, you get more value by getting something cheaper and maybe more silent

      • What would you recommend? Im a hard drive noob

  • +1

Just had an EXOS fail.. nice timing. I can't believe the prices of HDD's at the moment.

    • Lol, I just looked at receipts for 4TB drives bought nearly 10yrs ago. 3 x 4TB Red WD for over $600

  • +3

I had one of these running in my nas for a couple of years. I loved how quiet and cool it was. I wanted to get larger drives, so started buying enterprise models - but they make so many noises!

    • +2

@Thaos picked up that my Helium-filled drive (WD120EFBX) was quite different to the model in this deal.

  • +28

Just be aware that these drives are the newer WD120EFGX that replaced the outgoing WD120EFBX. They are filled with normal air instead of helium which makes them quite a bit louder at idle and while seeking. The spec sheet has this drive at 34dBA/39dBA (idle/seek) compared to 20dBA/29dBA of the older WD120EFBX. Whether or not that is a dealbreaker is up to you.

    • +3

Oh wow, that is a massive difference.

    • +1

Terrible! They make you pay so much more now and they give you less. People should search out older models on ebay or something, than pay top dollar for whats a mid tier drive now.

      • +5

Shrinkanomics at its best. And they're blaming everything on AI. Like AI caused Nvidia's greed.

    • Have just gone researching for a good quiet alternative and didn’t find any clear winners. Would be interested to hear anybody else’s recommendations!

    • Personal speaking, I will away from WD Red, prefer seagate Exos.

I'm not sure if this is worth its own post, but ironwolf pro 14tb appears to be on sale for $439 AUD from Amazon US

If only this was ssd flash.

Spinning disk is old technology now.

    • +1

They are still perfect for cheap, high capacity storage, backups and long-term archiving. I'm thinking to build a new NAS with few (4-5) of the 8TB drives

  • This (512MB cache) or Ironwolf Pro (256MB cache) @$384

  • Curious if anyone has dealt with warranty buying this from US amazon? Thanks

  • Seems it’s sold out now.

    • back in stock

  • Ordered on 22/12/25, expected delivery by 10/02/26. Crazy long delivery time for Amazon

  • 2/4 arrived DOA. Packaging was no where to be seen HDD's just able to be thrown around in the rather large box for the size of the package. Returned all don't wanna risk it after seeing the way they packed it.

    • My two drives also arrived without any protective packaging, just in a simple cardboard box. I’ve run extended SMART tests, and the results are normal. I hope there won’t be any issues moving forward.

    • +1

mine arrived same without any protection..Ran some tests on Disk genious it was showing bad sectors so I have returned it
