  • Hurray! Finally the same price as dark!

    • I really liked the Dark. How does this compare?

      • Not as dark.

      • Aldi dark makes my stomach hurt, too acidic. Medium and the ones named after other countries are fine though.

        • You have this the wrong way around. Darker coffee is LESS acidic. Google it.

        • Aldi dark has been my daily coffee for years - but coffee choices are literally personal taste.
I'll often buy a kilo of some of the top shelf roasters for a change but thankfully never get sick of the Aldi dark.

          • @goody: Cheap coffee, often masked by burner roast and more dark names, work much better if combined with milk from the same machine. This trick really can save a lot of money - if with milk you can't feel the difference between beans, why pay more?

            • @Ozzster: I like the taste of the medium roast with or without milk - lot of variables and anecdotal opinions when it comes to cofeee.
Main thing is technique, half decent equipment and spending some time and care.

            • @Ozzster: Roasters hate this one trick.

      • Much prefer the dark personally

      • Medium is more fruity, dark is more chocolatey.
I prefer dark as I prefer my coffee more on strong and bitter side.

        • Medium definitely doesn’t have any fruity notes. Well not to my palette anyway. See my post below comparing medium and dark flavours. As for dark tasting bitter, that simply means you’re over-extracting. No coffee should ever taste bitter

          • @MediumRareChicken: How not to over extract in automatic machine?

Havre Breville magnifica. Aldi Luxe taste bitter and bad.

            • @CrypticM: In auto.
Steam milk first. Do shot second.
Shot should be no more than 40ml (basically an oversized dribble in the.bottom).

              Don't grind too fine.

Shot should look like a brown mouse tail.

          • @MediumRareChicken: Nescafe Blend 43 says hello!

      • I've tried them all, Dark is the best Aldi bean IMO

      • Our family didnt like it. The dark is fine, but medium just wasnt a nice flavour.
Im not a coffee snob, will drink anything but wont buy the mild again.

        • Dark chokes my grinder

          • @sqheaven: That's odd, shouldn't be doing that.

Sounds like a grinder problem, was it in need of a clean?

            • @I am Steve: Not specifically. The beans may have a higher oil content in them which causes grinds and husks to stick to parts, thus resulting in a clog. I do agree that a clean is recommended, though.

I use this grinder cleaner which is really easy. Empty the grinder completely, use a vacuum on lower suction to remove any loose small material, then run a couple tablespoons of the cleaning media through followed with another vacuum. Afterwards, refill with beans and grind a small amount to remove any cleaner that may still be inside and you have a nice, clean grinder again. I was dubious the first time I used it whether it would make any appreciable difference, but very pleasantly surprised afterwards to find that it does.

              • @Chazzozz: That happened with beans from Zaraffa (coffee chain). Too oily.
Messed up the grinder in our auto machine. Grind some rice and it cleans it.
Aldi beans are fine though for us.

          • @sqheaven: This sounds rude

      • I like the choc notes of the dark, but the mouth feel of the medium. So I mix them.

        60% Aldi medium (toffee)
30% Coles blend (adds a nutty element)
        10% Aldi dark (dark choc).

        A 60/40 Aldi Medium/ Brazilian isn't too bad either.

        • do you mix all the beans and then grind, or do you have a setting for each then mix all the grounded up beans together

          • @zorodluffy: Just mix the beans in a sandwich bag and shake up.

I keep all bags in the freezer. Bring them out, make up a mix for the week, whack back in the freezer.

      • doesn't matter, "Just buy it"

  • For those without ALDI nearby, Coles and Woolworths also have an $18 1kg option.

Coles & Woolworths. Coles roasted in VIC, Woolworths roasted in NSW.

The Woolworths ones came from The Gourmet Brand Collective which make Northern Beaches & Bearded Barista Coffee Beans (https://abr.business.gov.au/AbnHistory/View?id=40620293085).

    • Whats the main difference between the ww coles and aldi home brands coffee beans btw?

      • Aldi: 100% Arabica
Coles: unknown, not 100% Arabica. Could be 100% Robusta or a blend.
Woolies: unknown, not 100% Arabica. Could be 100% Robusta or a blend.

Arabica vs. Robusta coffee: 5 differences

        Robusta is the cheaper one.

        • Does Coles have whole beans? My local just has pre-ground coffee.

        • Coles whole coffee beans tasted like the bottom of my coffee machine excess water/ drip tray. It was gross.

I wouldn’t feed it to my worst office enemy.

I rate 1990s maccas drip coffee better than Coles whole beans.

Aldi whole beans dark roast ftw for a fuller bodied flavour

          • @Butterfly Gocha: I just bought a bag of coles beans. Extremely bland, no distinct flavour profile and it's 110% not even worth $12 a kg.

            • @Combo64: @Combo64, if you paid $12 you got the wrong beans. Coles has 2 ranges, the one @hamza23 linked to is the one. I like that one, it's quite intense, and better to me than most of the specialist roasters I have had through the years.

              • @scarface: Yes coles has a simply range White in yellow bag. We are using the urban coffee culture it's about $24 a kg but I suspect will drop to $17 inline with Aldi.

The Aldi beans in the medium actually very nice they've got red berry notes which I particularly like.

However I don't know how ethical a coffee wall is going to become with the major supermarkets

        • Robusta has a better crema. So can have it's place.

        • The Coles one, which I’m drinking now, is so strong it’s probably Vietnamese robusta … the beans are very small not sure if that’s a give away? I got the woollies medium to try next when I saw it back in stock for $18 a week ago

        • Tha ks

    • I can confirm that the Coles option above is the best of the bunch imho. But then again, I drink blank espresso (made with a Bambino plus) and this has become my go-to brand. Still love my illy Intenso as a treat when they are on special.

Tried the ALDI dark roast but it's nowhere near the Coles one

      • Did you try the Aldi medium or Aldi single origin? That’s the one we are talking about here. IMO it’s quite nicer than illy or the Cole’s brand. Obviously don’t compare at all to fresh beans

    • Coles is comparable to the Aldi Medium, but both are noticeably worse than the Aldi SO.

    • ALDI one is 100% Arabica, there's no mention of it in both Coles or Woolies ones, so assume it's mixed robusta and arabica

    • How can I find the roast date on the Coles and Woolworths branded coffee? The Aldi brand provides the roast date as a batch number, which means I can make sure I'm buying freshly roasted coffee, rather than three month old coffee.

      • Pretty sure you just subtract 12 months from the expiry (or is it 24? I can't remember…), and you'll find that takes you back to 1-4 months prior to the current date.

      • How to read the batch number?

        • For Aldi coffee the batch number is YYMMDD.

    • Coles also have beans in a darker bag (and a little more expensive). I remember I bought it once after running out of my usual. They smelt amazing, I think I made a few (bad) coffees before I binned it though. Wouldn’t recommend supermarket beans at all unless you’re coming from instant coffee / are someone that’s enjoyed instant coffee

      • What beans would you recommend for $18 per kilo?

        • Wouldn’t have a clue, all the beans I buy are usually $60+ per kg. I only drink one or two per day, so it lasts the entire month

          • @johnnytran: Now I see why wouldn’t recommend supermarket beans.

      • I would have agreed with your statement 12 months ago..

But the Aldi beans and Coles Urban are hard to beat.

Especially if you can get them fresh
Aldi roast date is printed backwards on the side of the bag.
Coles is 12 months use by so you can work out when they were roasted.

My locals in Wallan are usually under 2 weeks from roast.

Combined with a decent grinder (breville smart grinder as a MINIMUM) and they produce an excellent cup

        • Agree, can get great results at a third to a quarter of the price.

A conical burr grinder still ok if it goes fine enough (shim mod) and have a wdt tool. Even expensive grinders are not without issues and far from perfect.

Lime blue when 40% off (and free shipping over $75) is a noticeable step up when budget permits. Still probably night and day but coffee making is a hobby of marginal gains.

  • The price of these has been wild lately. I swear it wasn't that long ago they were $14.99 then went up to $17.99 then to $21.99 now the "new low price" is $17.99.

I'm still buying them though. They are great beans for the price.

    • Agreed! Considering the price for a 1kg is between 50$-70$ for the "big brands" but in all fairness the consistency is out for month now and not worth the top dollar price tag.

      • big brands just rebrand this stuff.

        • Lol this is honestly the worst comment I have seen relating to coffee beans.. if you don't know. Better not to say anything.

          • @maverickjohn: Lisa: It is better to remain silent and be thought the fool, then to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
Homer’s Brain: Uh-oh, what did that mean? Better say something or they’ll think you’re stupid.
Homer: Takes one to know one!
            Homer’s Brain: Swish!

          • @maverickjohn: You realise the place that makes Aldi beans makes them for MANY others too?
Have a read of the very vague website
            https://blackbagroasters.com.au/

            • @Wiadro: That doesn't make all coffee equal, even big coffee places such as code black coffee, Vittoria etc have different beans in each bag..
Even if it's the single origin. They could be roasted to different standards or come from a different tree.
You might think they are all the same but a Colombian bean can differ massively from the next companies Colombian bean.

    • I bought two bags of dark when they were $12 per kg, expecting a price rise that didn't seem to arrive. Didn't use them that quickly and gave one bag away (were getting past the best before date). Now that I'm on the last of it it's 50% dearer (or rather we need 50 percent more of our increasingly watered down AUD to buy the same thing).

      • Didn't use them that quickly

should've froze it (ziplock it up air tight). It will have lasted way longer (like 6 months) if you did that, as long as you don't open it up.

    • You understand what a bean is right?

      • You understand what a bean is right

        Doesn't get much coarser :)

      • My bad, I was thinking about the pre ground packs they sell and did not read beans.
So yeah don't buy the pre ground stuff.

        • Aldi’s pre-ground is good for what it is. I use their decaf in my DeLonghi fully automatic machine - it has just the right coarseness. I once tried some other brand (Vietnamese), but it was too powdery and the machine choked on it.

    • Buy a grinder and get the beans, is cheaper and more wanky, makes you work for your coffee.

    • Count yourself lucky. My granules were the size of coffee beans.

    • get a better grinder?

    • get your own grinder is the way to go, like comparing pepper from a pepper grinder to preground, you personalize it to your preffered taste.

  • I have been buying the dark roast from Aldi for some time now. How does the woolworths or Coles ones compare?

  • Just got a pack of the luxe blend, it tastes so bad it's like vomit with milk.
I used to be happy with the dark and medium roast, every time I try to have something new it's likely bad.

    • I too had same experience with Luxe. Not sure why it's Soo hyped.

    • Single origin are better, but don't seem to have reduced in price.

    • Yep not impressed with luxe at all, and at $29 will not be fooled again. Sticking with dark roast..

      • I like the Aldi organic beans because they come in smaller bags and I like the taste. Works out to be $33 ish per Kg but heaps cheaper than the Crema beans I was buying before

    • I'm such a big fan of Luxe that I stopped buying Five Senses Dark Horse, and that was based on taste, not price. It's crazy how different people's coffee taste is. No wonder cafes get so many grumpy customers.

      • Probably machine and grind size, and then palette of the drinker.

    • The aldi luxe beans were soooo good. Then I got a bad bag. And returned to store to swap for a new bag which was just as bad. Never again for me. You probably got bad bags but if it's so inconsistent then it's not worth getting imo.

    • Luxe is bad. Avoid.

The Columbia and Brazil single o is excellent. Highly recommend.

  • they used to do a medium dark blend. that was best. at this price it's totally worth it

    • You could buy a bag of each and mix it manually

  • How are they able to make/sell these beans at such a cheap price when the price of coffee beans has increased so much in the last 6-12 months?

    • Child slave labour /s

    • Probably because the actual costs haven't increased as much as other products but the Colesworth and others are fine with increasing the cost of everything because they have a good excuse that people will accept blindly.

That sounds conspiracy-esque but I mean it.

      • people will accept blindly.

then their price increase is appropriate - the price should be charged at the one that customers are maximally willing to pay without decreasing the overall revenue.

    • Scale.

Bigger scale, more savings you can pass onto the customer. Roast house beans you buy direct cost so much because they have no scale and have to charge you for as much as they possibly can to make ends meet. Big chains don't need to do that as they get bulk discounts and some of the costs are already absorbed into their operation as a daily cost of business.

      • They also fix prices for sometimes years in advance , they hedge currency, they do lots of things to minimise global price impact (but use that to increase price anyway)

    • the company that roasts aldi beans is large, they roast and bag for other brands also, so if the raw material goes up , the other costs e.g roasting, bagging, shipping doesn’t and the raw beans aren’t the biggest input costs by the time it’s in your coffee machine.

    • prob just a loss leader

  • The medium is 100% Arabica. At least used to be. That's why the higher price compared to the dark was justified.

What are the odds it won't be 100% Arabica in the near future to go with the reduced price? Might be worth stocking up a bit on current stock. Coffee freezes well.

    • won't the bag tell you which type of bean it is?

      • Yes, the last "Medium" I bought (at $21.99) still has the 100% Arabica in big letters on the front. As has the photo linked on the website right now.

For the "Dark" there is no information what kind of beans, so the assumption has to be that it is mostly Robusta, since that is a lot cheaper. If it was Arabica, they surely would say so.

With prices now identical, either Aldi sells the Medium at much lower margins than the Dark, or they will switch bean once the current stock is depleted to get back to a higher margin.

  • Special price on luxe when
