GCDB: This offer includes the coveted $50-500 variable load Restaurant Choice gift card, meaning you don’t need to manage multiple smaller value gift cards.

    • +1

Still, what is the best way to use off the remaining small value? Does not seem to have a good way to do that.

      • +1

        Mcdonald 50c soft serve

        • Can u split payment at McD?

          • +2

@cuteduck: Yes: although it's a card + cash only combo which is inconvenient as you'll have to plan for the cash change. Use it at other places like KFC, Grill'd, RR which allows split payment across two different cards.

      • Split payments at stores that accept them, e.g. Zarraffas. Been a few other stores mentioned in previous posts.

        • +6

Can you list them again? May be we need a wiki page for it ….

          • +1

            @wildstone: I know first-hand that Grill'd does split payment.

            • @Soulja Sam: They are okay with splitting multiple cards with each of them $1-$5?

              • @wildstone: Yes, I have done multiple small denominations without any issues.

                • @Soulja Sam: Good to know, next time I'll visit Grill to use up all remaining cards.

        • I tried asking for split payment at KFC once, but they said they can only do that if paying by cash… doesn't make sense but I didn't want to hold up the queue :(

          • +3

@cynix: I did 2 times split pay at KFC a few days ago, it could rely on the staff if well trained / has exp or willing to do so.

            • +1

@test8888: for anyone interesting, I bought meal "2 for $5 2-5pm" (picked 4wings) plus free 600ml drink from quick survey (they don't check the code).
split pay 2 times with 3 cards, so far eliminated 5x small amount cards in 2days.

      • +1

Sushi Hub does split payment for multiple cards. If you are in Sydney, I know Nichi Getsu Do (Japanese Ramen) also accepts split payment.

  • wow this is a new one

usually they have it once a year around June or July for the variable Restaurant Choice gift card

    time to stock up

    • $500 * 5 = $2,500 worth of card in one transaction?

      • ya I've done before but you need to watch who you get

you need the manager to approve it because regular staff have to call them over for approval

        try like ciggy counter

pretty sure i got more than 10k last time in July

  • Can we convert the restaurant choice to the e-card to add to apple wallet?

    • +6

Yes, but it's not converted just added.

      The Physical Card remains valid.

  • -7

Immediately convert all physical gift cards to digital if possible, otherwise there is a significant chance another party has modified your physical gift cards.

    • Does digital card make the physical one no longer usable?

      • +3

For Restaurant Choice gift cards, no. The physical gift card remains active, and you have a digital copy of it stored on a mobile wallet. (You also can only store a gift card on one device's mobile wallet.)

The comment you replied to is completely non-sensical for Restaurant Choice gift cards (and Uber / Uber Eats gift cards). I suspect that commenter had TCN experience gift cards in mind (e.g. TCN Good Food gift card, TCN Restaurant gift card).

        • +3

It was indeed TCN Good Food.

        • +1

Correct it was TCN GoodFood. I had incorrectly assumed going digital would cancel the physical for Restaurant Choice gift cards. Since that is the case, I would say these physical gift cards carry too high a risk to be worth 10% discount.

My mum bought 5x $500 last time and they were all used up by scammers within the following month. Still waiting for a refund from Blackhawk, it’s been a big headache.

    • +3

Scammers had to eat out a lot unless they can resell or redirect the food

    • +2

I haven’t heard of restaurant cards been used by scammers.

Anyone explain how it works and best way to protect against it?

      • +2

There was some discussion back in July.

      • +1

FWIW, I raised a dispute on cardbalance.com.au back then, and it took them just over a month to resolve it in my favour. I received a replacement card.

I can't think of a good way to protect against this. Blackhawk says the fraudulent transactions were made using a mobile wallet (not my device, obviously). Given that the scammer appears to be located in a different state, and there was no sign of tampering on the physical card's packaging when I bought it, I can only assume the scammer simply guessed/bruteforced the card number, expiry date, and CVV. Perhaps these physical cards have roughly sequential card numbers or something that makes it easy.

It seems Blackhawk has at least made a half-arsed attempt to thwart bruteforcing: they introduced a restriction some time around September where you have to wait something like 24 hours after adding a card to your mobile wallet before you can add another one. Not sure if this restriction applies per card type (i.e. Restaurant Choice, Activ Visa, or whatever), or across all Blackhawk prepaid cards.

        • +3

Another restriction (probably) introduced around the same time is that you can only have a particular gift card added to one mobile wallet.

For example, if you add a Restaurant Choice gift card to an Apple Pay wallet on one device, you cannot add the same Restaurant Choice gift card to an Apple Pay wallet on another Apple device, Samsung Wallet on another device, etc.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Yeah I saw that on their website, but haven't verified it myself.

I think it might be a double-edged sword though. If a card can only be added to one device at a time, you'll certainly want to add all your cards to your phone as soon as you buy them. But the 24-hour delay means it might take several days before you can finish adding all your cards, which might give scammers additional time to steal them if they somehow get hold of the card details…

          • @WookieMonster: This 1-device restriction is very annoying — prevents me from adding to iPhone and Apple Watch.

  • +1

the difficulty with these is that all the restaurants add a surcharge. Usually when you ask them how much it is, they don't even know. I recently had a number of $100 gift cards and had to keep asking them to try different amounts until it worked. Still, love it for the savings even though I am often wasting $1 per card.

    • +1

Isn't that the same if you are using normal CC? The key is to able to find restaurant to split payment.

      • I would rather they split payment and add the surcharge at the end. Otherwise I have to work backwards and some restaurants find that too hard.

      • +2

The key is being able to find an eatery that can do split payments based on the dollar/cents amounts.

The last few restaurants I have been to have only been able to split payments based on items on the bill.

Then there is the pizza restaurant I once went to that would apply a 5% surcharge if I requested split bills…

  • great

Trying to find it mentioned elsewhere in wiki or other recent gift card deals but I cannot seem to find it. I have seen talks about limits on Cat Choice Groceries cards at what I believe were all self service terminals (Some suggest $280 limit, some suggest $270 limit) but is it any different buying from a checkout staff? Has anyone tried more than $280 at a manned register and did it work?

    • +2

Happens at manned registers too, I tried front counter the other day and had rejected payment due to the limit.

    • +2

Tried today at self checkout with cat choice - $243 didnt work -declined. When i put through $180 ($200 face value) it worked

  • +3

The biggest gripe with this card (vs TCN Restaurant card) is that it doesn't work with some online payment system (KFC is an example) so won't work trying to order and pay via app (but will work for payment in store via POS).

    • +1

Another example I ran into recently is a restaurant using an online ordering system provided by Foodhub (including when trying to pay via Apple Pay).

      • Would it be a security feature? Why the difference when paying via app vs POS?

If it wasn't for this hurdle/restriction I'd say Restaurant Choice is definitely far superior to TCN Restaurant, but I'm forced to have both to enable in app payments.

        • +4

It is likely a security "feature".

The Foodhub online payment portal does not reject TCN Good Food gift cards nor TCN Restaurant gift cards (either direct or via Apple Pay), so I suspect it is something to do with Foodhub not liking prepaid Visa gift cards (or Restaurant/Café Choice gift cards, more specifically) when you are making a payment online.1

I have also used an in-store Foodhub kiosk at the same restaurant and Restaurant Choice gift cards work fine there via contactless, so it further illustrates it is most likely some weird security "feature" related to the fact that Restaurant Choice gift cards are functionally prepaid Visa gift cards. (I have also noticed whenever I pay using a mobile wallet at this kiosk, the card number printed on the receipt is of the actual card number, not the virtual card number assigned to the mobile wallet. Unusual.)

          1. I know it is Foodhub rejecting them, as there are no declined transactions on Apple Pay, plus Blackhawk Network customer service previously told me they cannot see any declined transactions from Foodhub on multiple Restaurant Choice gift cards.

          • +2

@WookieMonster: @Craze To add to this, Wookie also posted about this in a previous deal here

            • +1

@MiscOzB: Do you guys just save/bookmark specific comments to make quick references in future?

              • +1

@Craze: Nah I just saw that again after reading about the hacker part linked above.

    • -1

I experienced that it does work with KFC online but for order value of less than $30

    • +1

      I can confirm this

It is because KFC app uses a SMS verification and TCN rest card can but Rest Choice cannot as its not a digital card but physical card that can be added to GPay / Apple Pay no sms feature

      • We need a widely accepted shorter word for restaurant

  • hmmm anyone tried using the Restaurant Choice card on EatClub?

    • +1

Yes, been using it for a while.

      • Wait, you can do that?

        • Not anymore! I just tried!

    • So there's one confirmation. Anyone else?

      • I've been using it on eatclub for at least a year. TCN works as well.

        • Can you please explain how to put restaurant choice giftcard into eatclub? Do you use app or desktop to fo it etc.

          • @Bettyboo: You put the card number in payment details like a regular card

            • @RTY: Thanks, it works now. I have to put as default the previous cc.

              • @Bettyboo: Not anymore! I just tried!

                • @aiyoyo: Is this with the updated EatClub payment card? I was checking it couple of nights ago and it prompted me to update payment card (which I did). Haven't used it though.

                  • @Craze: Yes with the recently payment card update.

                    • @aiyoyo: That sucks! Wonder how long we can delay the card update if they patched the hack with the new one.

      • yes I do it all the time and same with Good Food Card and TCN rest

      • Yes. It covers the Eatclub fee plus a bit more

      • I did so about 2 weeks ago for the first time. Stressed about it failing, but it linked and worked no issues

  • Has any one tried using Restaurant Choice on macros.com.au?

  • i buy restaurant choice from coles before, but i can't add on my apple wallet/pay. anyone have same problem? or it is normal?

    • I find that there is a time limit on how many cards you can add in a certain amount of time (not sure what the amount of time is), I have since bought another phone that supports Google Pay and have never had an issue since.

      • i just add 3 card on my apple pay. it's fine with my samsung but i change to apple now.

  • +1

Another way of dealing with the small balances is at local cafes. Both the ones near me are happy to split to get every part of the value off the card

    • +1

my local cafe is cool with it but I work the out the surcharge for them so it's easier

sometimes i just end up using their eftpos machine and punch the the correct amount if I am using multiple cards they are so cool with it

  • Anyone know if Restaurant Choice works with Kris+ app?

    • +1

I can't remember if I used Restaurant Choice or TCN Restaurant at the time which worked on Kris+ app.

  • If you are looking for the variable load card, Coles at Mountaingate Victoria have heaps

    • So variable load is included in this 10% off deal? Can see it listed in the original description or subject

    • That’s for the Restaurant Choice gift card

  • Yes, I made the purchase first thing this morning. The variable is definitely included.

  • i went doncaster east and doncaster coles at 8am, already ran out variable one.

    • Depending on your Coles. There is the usual wall of gift cards and then some of the served checkout counters have a small mini wall of gift cards. Check both! At my local, the main wall had run out of variable cards, but in the served checkout line there were a bunch of variable loads hidden behind a few $100 load cards - looks like someone was hiding them maybe!! =D

  • +1

Has anyone been able to use the Category Choice Groceries card to buy the variable load restaurant card? I just tried to buy a $300 card for $270 (which is what I read to be the cat Choice limit) and I also put in $20 cash to bring down to $250 just to be sure and then it would not accept cat Choice card.

Unsure if I came undone because someone used a Cat Choice card at the same terminal within the 10 minute cool down or if they have blocked using this card to buy other cards at Coles.

    • I just tried to buy a $500 RC for $450 at the terminal with Category Choice Groceries and it declined :(

    • +3

definitely limited to $200 each transaction. tested the same as others met https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/17253568/redir

      • Tried $200 at Coles, approved.
Wonder see if split payment works.
Already paid for a $500 FV earlier without
        Choice Groceries benefits.
        Guess that's dollar-cost averaging…

  • +3

What's the risk level of these cards being tampered and drained? Feel a bit scared to make the $500 purchase ….

    • +4

Should be low if you are only buying one then add it to your mobile wallet asap. At least that should stop scammer add it to their phone since it’s restricted to only one mobile device.

      • Is it unique to restaurant choice card that it can only be added to one mobile device only?

        • It is a feature that Blackhawk Network currently uses for all their prepaid gift cards supporting mobile wallets (e.g. Restaurant Choice gift cards, Category Choice gift cards, Activ Visa gift cards).

          • @WookieMonster: Any restriction on the the number of their gift cards in someone’s digital wallet?

            • +3

@unity1: In terms of BHN, I think they do not have a limit on the number of their gift cards you can have on a mobile wallet at any one time. My Apple Pay wallet at one point this week had 13 BHN gift cards on it at the same time. Having said that, you would not be able to add anywhere near 13 BHN gift cards to the same Apple Pay wallet in a short period of time: I added a Category Choice Groceries gift card to my Apple Pay wallet on Tuesday night, but when I tried to add a Restaurant Choice gift card to the same Apple Pay wallet on Wednesday morning, I got the card not supported error.

In terms of the digital wallet itself, it depends on whether that has its own card limits. For example:

              1. Apparently you can still hit a hardware limit, but it looks like you need to have many cards added to your Apple Pay wallet for that to be an issue.

              2. This is a link from an Australian banking website also stating there is a ten payment card limit.
