    uBlock for free!

  • +7

    Brave browser lol

    • +1

What if I like my existing browser? lol

      • +6

You don't know what you're missing

        • +8

You don't know what my existing browser is.

        • Firefox + uBlock = 0 youtube ads. Isn't Brave subject to Manifest v3 like all Blink-based browsers, and therefore doesn't block everything (by design). In that case, yeah I don't know what I am missing as I never see a youtube ad.

    • I've been using brave browser for 5yrs now and looking to go back to chrome. Some webpages especially cashback trackers don't work on it

One of the cashback made me missed out on $1050

      • +2

Just use it for the cashback stuff and Brave elsewhere. I use Firefox but go to Chrome when I need to use weirdly optimised websites that only work in Chrome (feels like the good old IE days)

      • I had similar as well and I used a guide from a user here to use edge and make sure I don't lose cashback

  • +26

sigh everytime an AdGuard deal comes up you see all the snarky comments advocating for free browser based options.

AdGuard is device wide DNS filtering, which means you can block ads outside of just the browser. Think of the all awful banner and pop-up ads you see in the free apps. Not to mention all the tracking and telemetry they send.

The only other alternative with feature parity is setting up your own DNS filters, which either requires self hosting, or editing the hosts file on your phone (requires root, Android only).

    • DNS filtering doesn't really go very far these days. You would still get YouTube and Twitch ads for example.

      • +1

I can confirm you do NOT get Twitch or Youtube ads, after DNS filtering - on the condition that you view them in the browser.

        • +1

You don't get ads in the browser because it applies a content blocker like uBlock Origin. The DNS filtering component does nothing. That's why it doesn't block any ads in app.

      • -1

There's a revanced solution for that.

        • Not if you're on iOS. There's also no Revanced for Twitch.

          • +1

@posilepton: There's Revanced for Twitch in the Revanced Manager on Android. Can't help you for iOS, yeah.

      • but Adguard works on apps like Newscorp papers which embedded ads for.subscribers.

        • Up to you if you want to pay $18.65 instead of read them in browser and not even need to pay for a subscription.

          • @posilepton: i don't pay for subs, but the app is a much better experience. There's other apps (some games), that work too. Yeah IMHO it was worth the $us13 i paid for 10 devices.

    • On the flip side, also messes with cashback tracking.

    • Or you can use blokada 5 for Android phones.

    • +3

Yeah, but ozbargin comments are always filled with know it all tiprats.

They rarely associate fruit with fruit let alone apples with apples.

I also love the one from poor people that say "but does it make you breakfast" in reference to a vacuum cleaner…

They fail to realise there are many varying levels of wealth but everyone here is still looking for a deal. Just because one can afford a top of the line item doesn't mean they should just pay full price.

  • +32

Go for the family Adguard plan here, which is a much better deal: See this: https://www.stacksocial.com/sales/adguard-family-plan-lifeti…

9 Devices: USD $15.97 (~ AUD $26.24) with code FAMPLAN

GST 10% will be added if you choose the country as AU. You can avoid it by choosing Country as US and State as Delaware (https://www.fakepersongenerator.com/random-delaware-address-…).

    • For stacksocial.com you can also use code TAKE20 for 20% off items, may end up cheaper, note it does not work for VPNs deals offered on stack social.

    • +1

Thank you for posting your comment, that's a great deal and I never knew the fakepersongenerator existed.

  • +1

Can I install Adguard on my Flint 2 router to cover more than 3 devices?

    • +2

AdGuardHome runs really well on Flint2, self hosting.

      • Reposting my question as i scratched my head and with gpt already but still not working

A technical question here, using this router with Adguard turned on, with a list of filters applied, i can see it's blocking heaps of noises from devices sending out, BUT it cannot block the ads, ie on ozb web, also toggle on the "Override DNS Settings of All Clients" but still not working

        • Add more block lists, you can also find the ad domain and block it.

      • Thanks for letting me know, unfortunately it's sold out now. Wish I hadn't listened to the previous response.

        • +1

AdGuardHome is free and open source - Nothing to pay for here. Be glad you didnt waste money, if you're looking at the self hosting option :)

        • You can still get the better deal on Stack Social shared here:
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/17243546/redir

          • @pennypacker: Apparently I don't need Adguard Home if I have a Flint 2 router

            • +2

              @KirKoloft: ???

AdGuard Home can be installed on a Flint 2 and it will provide DNS blocking.

This is a deal for AdGuard Ad Blocker, which are apps that can be installed on desktop or mobile, which is a more fully-featured solution that does a whole bunch of additional blocking that cannot be achieved by DNS blocking alone, and can also do DNS blocking if you so wish (which you wouldn't do if you also had AdGuard Home protecting your home network).

              See also

Edit: AdGuard need to do a better job of explaining the differences between their products, confusion reigns in these threads - without fail.

              • +1

@pennypacker: Thank you for explaining the difference between the two versions. I purchased the Ad Blocker family plan for the bargain price of AU$23.96 for my Delaware address thanks to Croccer.

                • @KirKoloft: Nice one! Enjoy. You will get a lot of value out of this, for sure.

        • Back in stock.

      • Is AdGuard providing similar functionality as PiHole? Thanks

        • +4

AdGuard Home is the equivalent to PiHole, as they are both DNS based blockers.

However, this deal is for AdGuard Ad Blocker for desktop and mobile. The difference being, the former only does DNS blocking, but cannot do "cosmetic" blocking, i.e. by blocking individual elements which the app can also do in addition to DNS blocking.

For example, an AdGuard Home filter rule can only block (or allow) a DNS request to a specified domain or URL.

Whereas an AdGuard Ad Blocker rule can block first and third party cookies, remove cookie nags, annoyances such as preventing right-click, saving images etc, plus remove tracking parameters (i.e. UTM tokens), shorten URLs, offer scripts such as AMP URL remover, Bypass Paywall Clean etc, as well as the DNS level blocking that AdGuard Home can do. And it can do all of that before the traffic even reaches the browser (so can filter crap out of non-browser traffic as well).

For what it's worth, I run AdGuard Home on a pi, AdGuard Ad Blocker on my desktop and mobiles, and run uBlock Origin on my browser.

  • +4

Note; while it's not a VPN, it uses the VPN function to filter out ads so you cant stack with another third party VPN to get both adguard and VPN.

    • +2

      Correct.

If you want both, you need to use RethinkDNS.
It's pretty neat, it's FOSS, and available on FDroid.
It uses the Android VPN API for DNS & Firewall, but then hosts a wireguard proxy within the app, so you literally get no-root firewall features, AND the ability to wireguard back to your VPN.

      • +1

Right! RethinkDNS is a perfect solution. I installed it on the new Amazon Fire stick 4k max and successfully blocked its update for forever. The newest Fire stick are very aggressive to updating.

    • Android Pixel 8 Pro - When I turn on Nord VPN it turns off Adguard.

Is that functionality you are talking about on desktop? How do I get both Nord VPN and Adguard to work at same time on mobile?

      • +1

I'm saying you can't do that on mobile

      • As I understand it, the mobile app for AdGuard uses a (their) VPN to filter out the ads, hence you not being able to be on one VPN and another VPN at the same time.

    • What if you add the vpn app to Adguard whitelist?

  • +4

I love this app. even works on amazon website to block out sponsored listings

    • I've tried various userscripts that claimed to block them but none of them worked.
How did you manage to get it working?

      • +1

I have many of the annoyance & ad blocking filters on. Only ones with Adguard in the name. Not sure which one(s) it is specifically. Works on both my desktop and android, website only, not app, if on android make sure https filtering is on and the security certificate is installed correctly.

  • +1

If anyone watches Twitch, this works really great to block ads on desktop (doesn't work on mobile) without having to constantly find the latest bypass when twitch patches it.

  • +3

    Highly recommend.

  • umm.. product unavailable when trying to add to cart.
    anyone has the same?

    • product is sold out. please update.

    • Out of stock now, that family plan that was posted in the comments seems good though

  • -2

Ok so using Firefox + uBlock Origin… What does this do, on top of that? Or using the Brave browser.

If it's nothing, then I don't think this is a good deal?

Also showing as ~$50 for me but also sold-out so can't test the coupon.

    • +1

For just browsing in a browser, this does pretty much nothing.

This is useful for ads anywhere outside of a browser.

      • Ok thanks, fascinating, such as?

      • For just browsing in a browser, this does pretty much nothing

        Not true

  • +2

Had Adguard turned off and went to use petrol spy, so many ads and barely usable. Stats say blocked 3.7m ads on my phone. Even if it's not that many it's still fantastic.

Even better when you add in custom block lists.
    https://github.com/hagezi/dns-blocklists

Also use Firefox + ublock for browsing and brave browser for YouTube.

    • Thanks for the blocklists

  • Use Adguard Home completely free.
    https://github.com/AdguardTeam/AdGuardHome
Or you can use setting AdGuard's IPs (e.g., Primary: 94.140.14.14, Secondary: 94.140.15.15) on any device as DNS network configuration.

  • Why would a lifetime subscription have to specify it's only for new users ?

    • +2

As confirmed by AdGuard Support, you can add it to an existing account.

I asked support before I did it the first time. Since then I've added a Family license and multiple AdGuard VPN 5 year licenses bought from StackSocial, all to the same existing AdGuard account.

Not sure why the listings say new users only but it's not the case. Also they don't care if you share your licenses with other people, a refreshing difference to streaming services etc.

  • Does this block youtube ads since I can't afford youtube premium anymore???

    • no it doesnt. If you are on ios then use Brave browser. if on android, use Revanced Youtube.

      • What about for windows??

        • Brave Browser for Windows
          PC mostly blocks YouTube Ads.

    • You can only do that indirectly by selecting a video on YouTube, tap share and choose AdGuard player. Good for long videos with lots of ad breaks.

  • +3

I've used this app for years and can't speak highly enough of how much nicer the internet is to use and how much less mobile data you use with Adguard activated. You can even add add a userscript that hides paywalls - suddenly nigh-on every need article on the internet can be read without subscriptions. Well worth the money either buying the personal plan or buying the whole family package.

    • +1

      Care to share the userscript?

      • +1

        Bypass Paywalls Clean

There's two sections on this page - Adblocker filters and userscripts. You want the userscripts down the bottom, copy the URL of the language of interest, then add it into the AdGuard app by Settings > Extensions > Add Extensions

The page seems to suggest you should use both the filter and userscript. There's a link in the first section to "Subscribe for AdGuard"

        • +1

Yes, that's the one. Brilliant add-on! I'm surprised it doesn't come up more often on Ozbargain. Their Chrome and Firefox extensions ended up with a DMCA takedown because they're so good at bulldozing through everyone's paywalls but this way of dealing with them has happily continued in spite of that

          • +2

@EnforcerOfJustice: Good news! You can still get the Chrome and Firefox browser extensions, just not through the Google and Mozilla channels.

            Enjoy!

  • The developers are soon (early 2026) making the AdGuard app to route all iOS traffic through your device without using their dedicated VPN. Looking forward to it!

  • won't even block YouTube

  • +2

If anyone still interested StackSocial has it for sale for $17.57 Lifetime (9 devices). Use code FAMPLAN.

  • +2

Got this on my unraid server as docker. Hook up kids devices via DNS. Could set dedicated wifi or network but haven't done that as don't wanna do a boo boo when cashbacks. Can block individual apps. Not bad. Also got this as family lifetime. Can also see what they been on. Using mainly to block some nast popups. Trust them until otherwise, and then stricter rules.

  • Admiral popup for News.com.au telling you to disable adblocker. How do you get around this?

  • Back in stock.

  • +1

https://www.stacksocial.com/sales/adguard-vpn-ad-blocker-fam… This gets you 5 years of VPN too ~$57AUD

Cheaper to get just the family plan, but VPN comes with Adguard DNS personal also for 5 years, valued usually at $19.99/year.

Edit: It randomly offered me 25% off as a popup too

FYI their block list is public if you want to DIY https://adguardteam.github.io/AdGuardSDNSFilter/Filters/filt…
