Price comes down to $1175.30 after the code. Is it worth it to spend this much on a office chair if I plan to use it for 10 plus hours a day? Any cheaper alternatives or suggestions?

The Buro Metro II 24/7 at half this price (around $550) has been great for me. I'm a heavy guy and sit down for work at least 8 hours a day. The seat base is very nicely padded and meets some certification - "AFRDI 142 – Rated Load 160kg Multi Shift certification". Other lighter family members use them too and also speak highly of them.

I bought mine online at Officeworks but lots of places carry them.

    • +1

yea i have had mine for like 6 years and it's as good as day 1, very good quality for the price (it was a lot cheaper when i got it, like 300ish on sale or smthn)

      • Yeah I got mine for $250. It’s come a long way and still sturdy

        • love my Buro.

    • Due to my body size, the Buro is too high for me and I can't place my feet firmly on the floor.

Have been trying to look for an alternative but not many chairs that go lower than 4cm.

      Still a great chair regardless

      • See if you can get a shorter gas lift, that can help reduce the height of most office chairs (cylinders are generally interchangeable other than visual look sometimes)

    • thats cool, Ive never heard of Buro. Looks like some of their chairs is Australian made too.

    • I had one of the buro's the mesh was practically not usable anymore it was so stretched out after a year and a half. My Ikea chair lost it's cushion in about a year.
I've now had a leap for 2 years and it's practically the same as when I bought it. Maybe it's different as I spend more time in my chair than I don't generally but I was having to replace these cheaper chairs so often that the price of entry was worth it anyway.

      • That's interesting. Was it mesh on the back or on the bottom? Mine has a mesh back (and very well padded fabric base) and I've sat in it for roughly a minimum of 8 hours a day, 5 days a week for 4.5 years now. As good as new. And I'm a chunky dude.

        • The buro cushion was still great for sure, it was just the mesh backing. I'm rather small so it may have been how my body is. My whole back was on it pretty much so maybe the pressure was different.

not worth it. i have this chair. i will replace it with something else.

  • Note only the black colour. Very comfortable chair.

  • +3

As per the last post about these, I bought 2 second hand for 300ish.

My favourite chair by a fair margin, would struggle to pay full price for it but would rate it miles ahead of Aeron based on person taste.

Has held up remarkably well after years of heavy use

    • I have one too, but rate the aeron and Mirra higher for my back. It is a better chair than any other office chair I have tried except the Herman miller ones, and they aren’t that much better that I am prepared to replace.

  • +1

Steelcase are good for sure, but they feel super overpriced.

I preferred the Haworth Fern (not the base, 'cheap' version from Officeworks), but it was a 3-month wait when I was looking. Ended up getting a Macaw from JasonL furniture, pretty happy with it.

I have this exact chair and I honestly don’t think it is worth the price. It still makes all the usual office chair squeaks and sounds every time I sit in it. I’ve tried everything (lube, tighten bolts, etc), but can’t get the noises to go away. Comfort wise it’s fine, but I’ve sat in plenty of other cheaper chairs which are just as comfortable. I really can’t think of anything about this chair that justifies the crazy price.

    • +4

mine barely makes a noise after 3 years, hasn't degraded at all. i'd buy it at this price in a heartbeat. got rid of my back and tailbone pain that i'd had for years.

    • -1

There's nothing wrong with it - using lube when it's tight normally doesn't result in less noise.

  • +2

This chair gave me chronic tailbone pain. Avoid at all costs.

    • +2

this chair fixed all my chronic pain, purchase at all costs

    • +16

My chronic tailbone gave me this chair

      • +1

My bone gave me some chronic. Oh yeah. Chair. Heh.

  • +1

I find the padding on the seat to be too thin. It certainly has all the adjustments you need, but I really don't think it's worth over a grand.

  • -2

when did office chairs reach $1000. I remember the days you can get one for $125.

    • +4

There have been officer chairs that cost thousands of dollars since forever, back in the 90s a Herman Miller Aeron was $1,000!
You can still get office chairs for $125 (I mean, there are office chairs for less than $50), but you get what you pay for and at that price range you probably aren't getting much.

    • You still can. Steelcase get away with charging over a grand because people keep paying for them.

    • +1

You can buy more fancy things than just pants

    • This is too cheap for ozbargainers. Only a herman miller for >3K is worth it.

    Pro level sitters here

  • +1

A got 1 for Xmas and it’s lop sided. Noticed it felt odd straight away. Seat pan is level but right side arm rest is 9mm lower (which is between notches so can’t level out by setting at different notches) and back slouches back easier / further toward right side.

Looked online and it’s a common complaint due to the lumbar tension adjustment being from 1 side. Some are worse than others.

I usually do 9-10hrs, sometimes more, so disappointed. Got a warranty case raised atm. Their comms have been decent so far but time will tell. If can be evened up I’ll keep it as it is comfy otherwise and good variety adjustments.

    • I had very good experience with Steelcase customer service in the past. I just made an enquiry about something that I wasn't overly bothered about, and they sent someone out to replace parts within a few days.

I'm quite confident they'll have you covered.

      • +1

UPDATE: Agree about their customer service. They asked me so check a couple of specific measurements and came back saying they will replace with a new one with all the logistics covered (While I expected it, I'm in WA whcih doesn't qualify for free delivery so nice to have it confirmed).

I’ve had this chair for 2 years and highly recommend it. Way better than any chair at Officeworks

  • -3

Poor people saying its bad chair to justify them not being able to afford it.

Rich people who bought this chair saying its good to justify their purchase.

People who sat on this chair for free, i.e. at their workplace gives real advice.

    • I have a second hand one for $300 for 5 or 6 years. The Aeron/Mirra at work were slightly better and will be what I replace it with in some years when it finally shows signs of age.

If you have a computer job, I think it is a false economy to buy a cheap chair after back issues that went away with a better chair.
Maybe you won’t get them? Maybe you just haven’t yet.

Both these and Herman Miller can easily last a decade.

  • Any idea where to buy at this price for us Queenslanders?

  • I purchased the Gesture variant 5+ years ago for $1200.

Submitted a warranty claim 1 month ago, so far crickets. Otherwise a good sturdy comfortable chair.

  • @fharu - is it worth it? Worth is always subjective and relative to the individual.

Since you said you'll be on it 10 hours a day, I would say its worth spending that kind of money (or more).

But it's also a bit risky to spend that much on a chair you've never tried before. If you can't try it then buy second hand instead.

I own an aeron classic and leap V2. I bought the leap brand new on sale for a bit over 1300 (a few years ago) so this deal is good.

There are so many chairs out there and it's rare to find one that is perfect, every chair has tradeoffs. The way they tilt or adjust may suit one person but not another.

  • +2

I've tested a bunch of steelcase chairs at my local dealer, not for me, I'd recommend you to try it out first before the purchase.

  • Your back is worth more.

    • Common but irrelevant sentiment, someone who alternates between sitting on a hard plastic $20 stool at the right height, an old couch, standing on some ordinary carpet, and an free tip-shop exercise bike, is probably doing better for their back than somebody sitting on a $2.5k HM for 2-3 hour stretches between breaks.

  • Personally the back support on this chair is way to aggressive..I prefer the Haworth zody , more breathable . Aeron are good but they too exxy

  • Great chair, but don't buy it new! You can find these for a fraction of the cost ($200–$300) on Gumtree or Marketplace during office relocations. I’ve been using a second-hand Leap V1 since 2014 and it’s still perfect. Just picked up a used V2 in 2025 for $240—the durability on these is unmatched.

Ozbargain loves a bargain chair for thousands.

  • -2

I've been through this dance… all these $200-$1000 all suck… they last 2-3 years and you end up paying for a herman miller for $3k, and they last 10 years +

    • -1

Wow whod have thought something that's triple the price is better 🤷
