Nice turntable. I bought this earlier this year and have been super happy with it. Reckon it's a great easy recommendation for a beginner wanting something in the intermediate range.

    • It's my first one so I'm keen to give it a whirl after doing some extensive research into different options that fell into my budget range. Haven't got speakers yet… Any recommendations?

Depends on your budget, room size and whether you want active or passive speakers.

I'm using the Wiim Amp and Q Acoustics 3030i, both of which I scored super cheap, and have been really happy with.

If you want a budget option, i'd just get a cheap Fosi Amp and whatever cheapish passive speakers you can find, new or on FBMP (the Q Acoustics 3020i are going for $390).

If you want the simplest/cleanest setup, get active speakers.

I've had this turntable for four years now and it hasn't missed a beat. I upgraded to a microlinear stylus and an external preamp, but you can get by fine without them.

You can hunt for a better used turntable for the same price (I tried) but if you prefer new, this is a good entry point. I also think it looks better than the other AT turntables at this price point.

    Project seem better value no?

When I did my research earlier this year, it seems like to get a comparable Project you needed to go for the Debut Carbon (probably better than this, but also $750).

The Project E1 Phono, which is still $100 more than this, seemed more like a beginner plug and play turntable.

      I'm definitely no expert though.

      • I drew the same conclusions when I was searching for my first turntable a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately didn’t score a nice deal like this on the W40 though, at this price it’s a no brainer.

  • Looks kinda fugly though

Depends on your taste of course, but I disagree.

  • Get this if you're in the market…comes with a quality cartridge too (Audio Technica VM95E)
I upgraded to the Moving Coil VM95EN/H

    • What speakers do you use?

That’s a moving magnet not MC

Why people still use vinyl? Pure vaporwave / aethetics?

    • Like with all things purchased for entertainment, they do it because they enjoy it.

I had vinyl as a kid until the CD revolution and the sound quality was so superior I got rid of all my records in a heartbeat and started on CD's. Then along came MP3 and FLAC and I thought dont need CDs anymore. Then along came the return of vinyl and I thought… why? Whats the point? Well I got myself a Sound Burger when they were on special because I saw many of the new LPs were remastered and… wow, I didnt realise there would be such a difference. I am actually now listening to vinyl more than any other format. Its just so much.. bigger, everything hits so much harder, and just listening to the songs is so enjoyable. Perhaps even a superior way, or more emotionally impactful way of listening to music? I dont know, but it sounds great, with a Fiio alpen 2 amp, and pretty good headphones.

      • Is that mean the old collection that I still have are going to sound pretty bad, no matter how good the player is?

        • No.. I guess its like MP3 to FLAC though, the newer vinyl sound a step up. Actually one thing I'd like to do is play my new records on my old stereo and see if there is a lot of difference, but I dont have it any more.. would be an interesting experiment

Thanks for the detailed response, i wanted to get into it and get a vertical player as a feature for my living room , but the price of hobby and hassle is quite high for me at the moment.

not sure why i got negged negged, but i hope you have a great 2026

      • If you've got an album that you really, really love - then playing it on a record player won't give you better sound (in my opinion) - but you'll enjoy it more because you can hold it in your hands. Hope that makes sense!

The flip side is…. In my teens I wasted loads of pocket money on trash albums… Nowadays you really don't want to be taking a gamble on a record for $60 or $70, only to find that you don't like it!!!

    • Personally, I still listen to it simply because I enjoy getting the record out of the sleeve, putting it onto the turntable, looking at the art work etc.

I refuse to pay the stupid rrp prices for vinyl records nowadays.

Problem is - the 2nd hand market is almost as expensive 😭

  • Loved mine for the past couple years and can recommend. A couple months back I replaced the stylus (very simple) to a VM95ML Microlinear. This was a decent sound improvement there but the original is fine too until it wears out. Paid $515 @ Selby

    Seperate preamp too.

  • 'Fully manual' does that mean the head doesn't auto return when it hits the end of the record?
Is there a different model at a similar price point that does auto-return?

    • +1

Correct - it does not return. I’m not sure you’ll get the same quality build + customisability with other fully automatic turntables at this price point. Personally I’ve had no issue with returning the arm manually.

      • +1

But then I have to get out of my comfy chair, or the clicking at the end of the record wake me out of my serene slumbering. :)

      • I like the novelty of having to reset it yourself.

        • -3

That's it - the novelty - and then ot runs out when you forget or leave a room etc and the needle runs a ring into the vinyl.

  • Thanks very much for sharing this deal, already in market looking for a truntable setup.

    Hi fellow members,

I have a budget of around 1500 (max) for receiver + speakers. Would you be kind enough to guide me what to buy pls?

    Thanks in advance.

    • +1

Get this plus a Fosi X5 and Fosi V3 for under $750. Use the remaining budget on decent speakers.

      • thanks for sharing. what speakers do you suggest? i am looking for some punchier sounds

  • I have the AT-LPW50PB which I'm 90% sure is the same turntable but in gloss black. It's a very good turntable.

    • I think you're right. I like the look of the walnut personally. What's your speaker set up?

  • +1

    Ah so the turntables

  • -1

How deep are your pockets? I upgraded my floorstanding Richters to Wharfedale EVO 4.2 bookshelf speakers (Walnut/$1500) but have the hi-end amplifier to drive them,so ensure that the Receiver/Amplifier is powerful enough to drive your speakers…I have an "as new" Pioneer 50w.Network/CD/Receiver NC50DAB for sale that's spent most of it's time in a box if you're interested.
