Been using adguard for quite sometimes, definitely worthed to get one to remove those pesky ads on mobile (since at home network you could have an alternative, like pihole, etc).

Just make sure you deactivate it when you are accessing shopback/topcashback type of website.

    • Yeah it gets rid of those “anti-ad blocker pop ups”

    • +9

I'm using the free version and seems quite complete - what does the paid version do that the free version doesn't already?

    • you can add iOS profiles within iPhone already to block almost every one of those ads. In addition, use brave as your default browser, the number of reduced ads now feels really good.

    • +3

Also be aware of the company that makes it, given the access you are giving it to all of your internet activity.

"Our head office is physically located in Moscow, however, legally AdGuard is a Cypriot company and abides by the EU laws.
The iOS app is no different to any other app that's developed by AdGuard team in that regard."
      https://www.reddit.com/r/Adguard/comments/t05r9v/comment/hyd…

      • What alternative is suggested for mobile?

        • Deploy a pihole at tailscale and enjoy add blocking with a device that you control

    • If you have pihole nothing is stopping you from installing tailscale and using your at home pihole to block ads on your phone.

Adguard is good. But with pihole you keep most of your filtering and internet history within your home and ISP

      • my Gli.net router has built in Adguard Home, is it same as this one ???

  • +2

Does this do anything that ublock origin doesn't do? I have googled it and I can't tell

    • -5

      I use brave browser

    • +9

Yes. System-wide ad blocking. Ublock is just for the browser.

      • So how does that work with mobiles and in game ads? Does it block them too? A lot of ads in free versions of apps are times before you can skip, do you just see a blank screen for 10 seconds instead?

        • +7

They just don't show up. Try it out, go into network settings -> private DNS -> select the bottom option where you manually type in the dns and set it to dns.adguard.com
That one is free, not sure what the paid version gets you. I haven't seen an ad for years on my phone. FYI, the sponsored ads at the top of search results will probably no longer work.

          • @scoobydoobie: Yes this simple address in your mobile settings does most of what you would want/need.

Just turn off when doing cashbacks.

Browser plugins on PC do the rest.

PS. I thought uOrigin plugin was discontinued or not recommended to use now (maybe that was just related to Chrome browser).

        • Depends on the type of ad, the provider, how the game handles no network connection to ads, etc. Most will just tell you they couldn't connect to an ad provider and just not give you any rewards.

For games that have random popup ads, 90% of the time they just don't show up, the other 10% it's just a blank screen with a cross that shows up after 15s…. haven't seen one of those in a while though.

      • So can you install it on the router for true system wide on all devices? You'd need to be able to toggle off easily for cashbacks (changing to mobile data easiest I think).

        • So can you install it on the router for true system wide on all devices?

          No.

You are (still) confusing 2 very different products

          • AdGuard Home (AGH) - you install on a server (e.g. router, Pi) and it provides DNS blocking only for multiple devices configured to use AGH as the DNS server
          • AdGuard Ad Blocker - this deal. An app is installed on a single desktop or mobile device and provides much more sophisticated blocking for that device only.

Differences between AdGuard Home and AdGuard Ad Blocker explained here

          • @pennypacker: Cool, ta.

Btw Adguard DNS settings is good enough for phone and got an ad blocker plugin on chrome.

    • uBO deletes elements related to the ad also, so no trace of them existing is visible (no blank placeholders etc), only in the browser you installed it on.

This just blocks the connection to them, device wide. Think PiHole but device specific. So if UI elements for ads are in the site's layout, you'll still see blank spaces where ads were supposed to be.

      • This just blocks the connection to them, device wide.

That is incorrect. The app in this deal has more sophisticated filtering than just dns blocking. It can filter HTML and CSS elements, add or remove scripts, clean up URLs, block and expire cookies, set custom rules and filters/scripts and so on and so on.

So if UI elements for ads are in the site's layout, you'll still see blank spaces where ads were supposed to be.

        Also incorrect. See above.

        • +2

How did I miss that feature. I stand corrected. It's interesting how it handles that, basically injects a css stylesheet into every page and a js script for additional filtering.

Has anyone bought the Windows 11 Pro on that StackSocial for US$9.97? Is that a one-year or lifetime version?

    • For $9.97US you may as well give it a go, nothing to lose but spare change. They are OEM keys mainly from the 3rd world companies or dodgy businesses who bought offical licenses from Microsoft in bulk, they are not legit retail keys and can be revoked or canceled at any time. Honestly, it's better to buy a cheap Windows 11 Pro license from stacksocial or other sources than use malware ridden KMS activators from God knows where.

      • +3

than use malware ridden KMS activators from god knows where.

Why would you use those when there's an open source option hosted on Microsoft owned infrastructure that Microsoft have apparently used for users on support calls?

        • That's what I'm saying, don't used pirated KMS tools there are better options, even buying a grey market Pro key for peanuts is better.

    • +24
      • +4

        All hail

      • Noice.

they are OEM product and free in github. Please don't waste money.

Massgrave is only for windows, right? What about Mac and iPhone?

        • What about Mac and iPhone?

          What about them?

          • @spaceflight: Sorry, I should have asked clearly.

Is there a similar alternative for Macbook similar to massgrave for windows?

            • +5

@shivaussie: massgrave is to activate windows, on a macbook you have no need to activate windows

              • +1

@Undercut 2241: Shiv wanted to know is there's an -alternative- type of activation service/method for MacOS.

                • +1

@Aarent: There is no purpose or existence of alternate activation methods as all Apple devices come with MacOS/iOS/iPadOS "full activated" already for free

              • @Undercut 2241: Not strictly true.

Massgrave can be used to also activate Office which can run on both Windows and Mac.

            • -1

              @shivaussie: It still isn't clear

MacBook is a piece of hardware.
Why would you need a Microsoft activation for a MacBook?

        • do you mean black apple? I have one mirror system in my PC even I never use it. Also free in github with a whole set of material

  • What does not a vpn mean? On android it asks for vpn

    • "This is NOT a VPN" means that this is not a VPN (which Adguard also sell)

    • +6

On Android, AdGuard uses the system VPN functionality to intercept network traffic and provide the adblocking and other functionality.

But it is not a VPN because it doesn't provide a "virtual private network" using a dedicated network endpoint.

    • +1

“Not a VPN” means your internet connection is not using a Virtual Private Network.

Your traffic goes directly from your device to the website, your real IP address is visible, and there is no extra encryption beyond normal HTTPS.

  • +1

Cool but what does this do that the free Adguard android app doesn't do, in practice? I already have device-wide ad blocking and Https filtering, what else would I need?

    • -1

Can you point us to the free AdGuard Android app? Are you talking about AdGuard Content Blocker (which is a limited set of features and works only on Yandex and Samsung browser apps)?

      • Not that one, this one: https://adguard.com/en/adguard-android/overview.html

You can download it from there. Blocks all ads on my device (pixel) not just on chrome. You download the apk directly from their website not from Google play.

        • +2

          https://adguard.com/kb/adguard-for-android/features/free-vs-…

AdGuard for Android has a free and a paid version. Paid features extend AdGuard's capabilities:

          • Ad blocking in apps allows you to block ads in non-browser apps. You can specify apps for filtering in App management
          • Tracking protection increases your privacy by blocking tracking requests, online counters, UTM tags, analytics systems, and more. More about Tracking protection
          • Browsing security warns you if you're about to visit a potentially dangerous website. More about Browsing security
          • Custom filters and user rules allow you to add your own filtering rules and third-party filters to fine-tune ad blocking. More about filters
          • Userscripts allow you to extend the functionality of the browser and use AdGuard Extra that prevents ad reinjection. More about userscripts

You do get a 14 day trial of the full version, maybe you're getting the full features temporarily if you're in the trial period? Otherwise it's browser-only blocking in the free version.

          • @pennypacker: Yeah so not much. From experience ads are already blocked on all apps, except some very rare instances.
Then there some privacy features and poweruser options. All in all probably not worth it

            • @liongalahad: I did a ninja edit at the bottom of my previous reply. You only get browser blocking on the free version, unless you're in a trial period or otherwise have other adblocking set up, e.g. filtered DNS.

              • +1

@pennypacker: I had this app for years and blocks all ads in all apps not just browser. Except, as I said, in very rare instances.

                  • @pennypacker: I assure you. Most apps don't show any ads. For example I have a tennis live atp ranking that you are supposed to pay to have ad-free, and if my Adguard is on, it doesn't show any ads. Every game when you have to watch a video and to keep playing, doesn't show the video. Etc
Maybe most apps use the browser internally to show their ads?

                  • @pennypacker: Try yourself. Install ad guard at that link I sent you (without activating free trial) then install this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.divisionby…

And see if it shows you ads

                    • @liongalahad: OK, I believe you, I just find it curious that AdGuard would give away functionality that they highlight as a selling point for the paid product.

Btw, I already have AdGuard Ad Blocker installed and licensed. I'll remove the license, install the LTR app and report back

                  • +1

@pennypacker: Ok so I just checked and in the adguard app I have DNS protection enabled so that must be it (also included in the free tier adguard app)

The result is the same though: I have ads blocked device wide with the free app…

                    • @liongalahad: You must have something else filtering the ads. I removed my license, turned off DNS filtering under Protection > DNS protection, and the verdict, is ads…

Have you got network level DNS filtering on your wifi? Try disabling wifi and using cellular data?
Have you set up private DNS under Android settings?
If you've disabled DNS filtering, give it some time for the DNS TTL to expire and point you back to the ad serving IP addresses.

AdGuard for Android - unlicensed and DNS filtering disabled
LTR app installed - ad at bottom

                      • @pennypacker: Yes as per my message above (probably you missed it) I noticed DNS filtering is on in my Adguard free app so that must be it. Still, the result is the same isn't it? No ads device wide with the free app.

                        • @liongalahad:

If you've disabled DNS filtering, give it some time for the DNS TTL to expire and point you back to the ad serving IP addresses.

But yes, if it works for you, happy days.

                          • @pennypacker: Under android settings DNS filtering is set on automatic.
Under Adguard settings the DNS filtering is ON, and that's what's blocking the ads, we found out.
My questions remains: with free tier I have device wide adblock (through dns filtering), what would be the reason for upgrading, if you're not a power-user?

                            • +1

@liongalahad: For 9 devices lifetime license (across desktop and mobile) for a touch over $20 it's a no-brainer, must purchase for me. I've had it for 3 years now and wouldn't be without it.

I get a great deal of value through the Windows app and Android app, including the additional licensed features I pointed out earlier, including:

                              • web: more fine-grained blocking (what AdGuard refer to as "cosmetic" blocking) which is much more powerful than simple DNS filters. This allows you to block individual page elements rather than entire domains
                              • web: tracking protection to block or limit first and third party cookies,
                              • web: user scripts allowing you to access things like Bypass Paywall Clean (removes paywall restrictions from many sites)
                              • system: network wide blocking, e.g. blocking Windows OS ads
                              • web: custom filters and rules (use any rules you like, not just what is built into the free version) - for example I whitelist many referral and self-promotion items
                              • +1

@pennypacker: Ok you make a lot of good points actually, thanks

                              • @pennypacker: Hey mate, Can you tell me if it opens links within couriermail using the paid version of adguard. I will then definitely purchase it.

                                https://www.couriermail.com.au/topics/asx-trader

                                • @shivaussie: Sure. If you have a license for AdGuard Ad Blocker, you can install user scripts, one of which includes Bypass Paywalls Clean.

For best results, install the browser extension from the link above and the user script for AdGuard.

Edit: results can be a bit touch and go…best to have a go yourself with the free trial, or just use the browser extension to see if it works for you.

                                • @shivaussie: I'm running this licensed AdGuard Adblocker and see no ads on that link/website.

I haven't installed that Bypass Paywalls Clean extension below.

                              • @pennypacker: Can you confirm you can use Adguard Family Plan instead of Bypass Paywall Clean to read AFR, and Daily Telegraph?

                              • @pennypacker: Is there a decent link or YT tutorial that shows the best, simplest way to set things like Bypass Paywall Clean up in AdG?

                              • @pennypacker: Thanks! I'd not heard about the bypass paywall script before. Installed it, and working great on the newspaper sites.

I've been using adguard for years on my Android phone. The only problem is when I want to connect to my work or home VPN - I can't run both at the same time.

And as someone else said revanced youtube gives adfree playback. Been using this for a long time soon.

Any other apps or scripts worth adding?

        • -1

Why install the app? You can just configure the adguard dns server in android network settings. I haven't seen an ad for years.

          • @scoobydoobie: Sounds like the solution.

Can you please provide a short summary of how to do this?

Seems better than needing to purchase this 'deal'.

            Thanks

            • +1

@movieman: Settings -> network and internet -> private DNS -> select Private DNS provider hostname -> type in dns.adguard.com

Shopping links and sponsored ads in web search results may no longer work.

          • @scoobydoobie: They are not even remotely feature equivalent.

            • @pennypacker: It's good enough. You keep paying though, someone's got to subsidize my usage.

              • @scoobydoobie: Sorry but it's not the same. The main thing is if a website is not working properly with the AdBlock on (and that happens quite often) it's a fairly lengthy process to go into settings, disable the custom DNS , use the website, and then go back into settings and re enable DNS.
With the app (free app is enough) you can have a tile in quick settings, or a widget, that turns Adguard on/off very quickly and handy.
I agree that the free app is enough for most uses however from direct experience setting up DNS in settings is nowhere near as handy.

                • +1

@liongalahad: Been using it for years, I don't think I've ever had to disable it. A friend of mine has also, the only time they mentioned having a problem was logging in to a wifi access point that used a web page for authentication.

                  • @scoobydoobie: I would say it happens 10-12 times a month to me. Webpages not loading or not working properly, sometimes payments not going though etc

                    • @liongalahad: Which web sites?

                      • @scoobydoobie: Can't remember now on top of my mind, if I remember I'll post next time it happens

                        • @liongalahad: Sounds like the problem is the app. Next time try uninstalling it and just using the DNS setting and see if that works. Worth a go if you're having that many problems.

  • Does anyone know if it’s 9 simultaneous devices, or 9 in total?

I.e, if you get a new phone or laptop, can you deactivate the old device and use it on the new device? Or if you’ve chosen 9 devices, then that’s it?

    • +2

It's per device. So if you get a new device, remove the license from the old device and add it to the new one.

    • +1

      9 simultaneous devices.

    • +1

Also if you need more than 9 licenses these deals are stackable.

The listing says new users only but it's not the case. I've stacked a few StackSocial AdGuard deals in one account.

  • +4

Did some researchs and this seems to be a good product.

Skip a beer to grab this. Thank you OP

  • +2

Awesome deal, finally pulled the trigger. Setup on my phone and tablet in less than 5 mins, wife's phone next then maybe parents.

  • +1

This is a very good product

    • I think the functionality has been explained here more than often enough. How about having a look for yourself?

  • +3

    Will this block YouTube ads?

    • No. For that you need ublock origin and firefox, or brave browser

      • Will the paid version block ads on "YouTube app"

        • +5

          If on Android: https://revanced.app/

        • No. It is impossible for a DNS based blocker to block youtube ads as both ads and videos are served from the same domain.

        • How to block ads in the YouTube app on Android:

          Open the YouTube app.
Choose a video and tap Share.
Tap More, then select Adguard Player.

          • @KirKoloft: This ^^^

However Revanced is better for this use case.

            • @sav11: I don't like installing an unknown file on my devices and then keep patching it on a regular basis.
