Has Anyone Recently Installed or Built a Small Backyard Office/Cabin/Hut - Kit Style or from Scratch?

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone here has any recent experience with kit-style backyard cabins or huts - or possibly built their own and happy with the end-result?

I'm seeking something in the 10-20 square metre range that looks classy enough - and is not shipping container-based - and won't detract from the house value - and will last.

Something like the Breeze - from here https://scandicabins.com.au/backyard-cabins/

Budget - say $50k. No kitchen/toilet etc needed. Just a nice looking insulated and lockable shell that you could throw a couch/tv in and maybe some exercise equipment.

I've got powerlines and NBN out the front and a long thin block which rules out cranes and shipping containers style pre-fab.

  • Those designs you've linked look pretty nice. I want one too now! haha.

Have you thought about a granny flat, if you have enough space? It'd add good value, and once you're bored using it, rent it out for additional income.

    • It's tough enough living with my own family - let alone someone else's :)
I'm thinking more pool house / entertainment place rather than granny flat.

      • All the more reason to go for a granny flat then… you can live in it indefinitely :D

  • think cubby house and make it bigger

  • Couldn't you extend your house for that sort of money?

  • I've seen this sort of thing closer to $15k so I recommend shopping around

    • I'd guess a bit more than that.

    • There is definitely lots of cheap options - but upon closer inspection you realise the quality is pretty ordinary and they overlook or play down the importance of things - e.g. guttering, or insulation or timber type or roofing product or ceiling height. If there are more higher-end products out there in the kit style - they are lost in the sea of cheap kits advertised everywhere. I'd ideally go something custom with quality materials - but finding plans and/or a tradesperson to build such a thing with such a budget is tricky.

It would be great if someone in Aus had some type of instructional sequenced plans/videos to build such dwellings that included links to locally obtainable products. You would pay a fee for the instructions - maybe get previews of each step-by-step video to show its authenticity. The producer could get a commission for linked products they use etc.

        • Very nice - I hadn't seen these before!

        • If only these designer hideaways had a slightly higher ceiling option and increased depth option - rather than being fixed essentially at 3m.

          • @mshanann: They are cheaper due to being fixed. But I have seen a few similar outfits with prefab pods so you might find what you are looking for.

            • @Enterz: I'm looking at these guys now - https://www.inoutside.com.au/
purely as they have a more flexible footprint and not limited to 3m depth.

              • @mshanann: What sort of prices for the kits? looks like SA based, but I am in melbourne

                • @Enterz: I'm Brisbane based and got an email from Tony at inoutside stating they don't service the QLD market as yet - but possibly changing in a few months. So I'm unsure of their prices.

I also received a message from Debbie at designer hideways stating their designs are fixed and they don’t offer custom wall heights or sizes - which is understandable - but somewhat disappointing given a fixed 3m depth is not much to work with, and the ceiling height just 2.2m at its lowest point. For my use-case - with the cabin being a long term structure and feature of the hosue - I'd ideally like another metre or so in depth, and a bump in min ceiling height to say 2.5m.

                  • @mshanann: Fair enough. I'm just looking for an office so I can free up a bedroom. 2.2 is kinda low

  • I like the look of these: https://imby.com.au/

    • @Iheart-discounts Welcome to ozbargain.

  • so did you end up getting this? I am considering getting one and spend max around 20K including basic electrical and a cheap AC.
    I came across a few :

    https://www.stilla.com.au/
    https://gardenhouse24.com.au/backyard-offices.html
    https://www.landera.com.au/cabins-studios-granny-flats/

  • @vshek - nope - I had contacted a few of those companies above earlier in the piece - but they either didn't service here (Brisbane), or their designs were fixed. Many of them seem to possess a very low ceiling/roof, or were shallow in depth. I also was concerned about long-term durability and quality - particularly for those examples that seemed to have overlooked things like guttering.
