If a pregnant person is drinking alcohol, their IQ is so low that any warning would not help anyway. But we do not have any laws to prevent those people to get pregnant.

I get the feeling you can provide some personal feedback on that one.

it could be.
The chemical that is responsible for killing the most people in the world, year in, year out is H2O, but I still drinking every day. Depends how much.
@figarow: Huh?? You're saying that a fetus can safely consume what, a fetus-sized portion of alcohol? Your comment makes no sense.

Huh? Many things are harmful for fetuses. Should Aspirin come in plain packaging and huge warnings too?

Nup. No amount is good for you, but a small amount isn't necessarily bad for you.

This feels like more of a Reddit question than an OzBargain one

r/NoStupidQuestions

It's a fair enough question. Both substances are bad for you, both are addictive. What's the difference? I guess alc is easier to make at home.

What's the difference?
Alcohol can pass through the blood brain barrier of a pregnant person while smoking does not

Don't say twice, or there will be a new law…
A person of average intelligence is capable of understanding the risks of excessive alcohol or cigarette consumption. Someone less sensible, however, is unlikely to pay attention to any warnings anyway.
I'm above average intelligence yet i still drink to excess despite knowing it's very bad for me. Intelligence doesn't always equate to making good, healthy choices in life. It just helps to be depressingly aware that the issues are of your own making and reduces the efficacy of blaming the negatives on somebody else.
I'm all for personal freedoms whilst simultaneously believing that there does need to be some level of governmental control to combat what would otherwise be rampant deceptive and immoral marketing by any and all corporations looking to sell us things that are bad for us under the guise of them being healthy

I don't think any company today is selling alcohol under the guise of them being healthy.

@ltwo: Due to regulations yes, that is exactly my point.
Were there not governmental regulation to restrict this from happening, you can be sure that they would.
the entire "Guinness for strength" campaign they used to run back in the day is a prime example.

So what makes you have ‘above average intelligence’?

@CommanderCrumbcake: Statistically he is more likely to be average intelligence though. Above average intelligence is less likely.

@Naigrabzo: Statistically, anyone is more likely to be either above or below average (or median) intelligence measured by IQ.

@CommanderCrumbcake: Trying to be as little a flog as possible. I was accepted into a selective entry only school in Melbourne (Melbourne high) which puts me in that category.
My point was only made to illustrate that there isn't necessarily a correlation between intelligence and good decision making when it comes to alcoholism and other things though. Outside of that point my intelligence is largely irrelevant.

@slipstreamexpress: yeah true. intelligent people can have addictive personality. Also intelligent people can have selective bias and cognitive dissonance. You need to learn about critical thinking etc to overcome the latter. Some are savvy and natural have their Bullshit meter high and don't get duped by BS.

In Russian: Why write "smoking kills" on vodka???
Female interviewer:

How come cigarettes have to come in plain packaging and have huge warnings, but alcohol doesn't?
The short answer is that history, politics, and how harm is perceived, not because alcohol is harmless.

Not one breath of inhaling cigarette smoke is not harmful to anyone. One drink of alcohol will not do any damage to most people. That's the excuse.
Smoking is damaging to the user, alcohol is damaging to others

But you're wrong - even one drink of alcohol does damage (to the brain, liver, etc). It does a very very small amount of damage, but still damage nonetheless.

Cite the science behind that

@Big L: World Health Organisation good enough for you?

"when it comes to alcohol consumption, there is no safe amount that does not affect health"

thanks i bought 10 bottles vodka except how can it be this cheap? are they are a domestic producer so they get some amount excise free?

Sold as hand sanitizer 😜😜. I agree though the excise would be more than what we are paying. I also suspect this code wasn't meant to be public… Will wait and see if it arrives.

The code is meant to be public. I received it as well and $25 bottle "specials" are common

The text they sent out has "PLEASE SHARE CODE :-)"

Yes, they are domestic and have a certain quantity of excise free to see. They also come under a few other names and do the same thing. qstill.com is another. I think they just sell their excise free quote, move to the next brand, sell that quota. Rinse and repeat.

Snap.
Correct. Domestic producers get excise exemptions / refunds below certain sales volumes.
They phoenix every few months, changing labels etc to renew the tax free threshold…
I've bought probably 50 bottles from them so far for about this price. Cheap easy gifts

You give a $25 bottle of Vodka bought on special as a gift? Lucky them!

Does it taste okay though? Or is it approaching rotgut quality?

Some are decent, some are horrible

The flavoured stuff is average. Vodka is vodka…

Thanks OP. Perfect timing because I'm going overseas in 2 weeks. Makes for nice presents for my dad and brother/sister-in-law.

You'd be far better off buying them something in duty free, where there is also no excise (although a ridiculous markup in the duty free stores, but there are usually sale items. Melbourne airport has 2x1L Absolut for $69).

Thanks for the suggestion! $25/29 is a great price and the bottles are nice.

For anyone playing along, this liquor brand is one of the sub-brands of these guys, and the comments section gives some background.

hm, that explain the cheap price!
Well, this is more of an ATO concern than mine though. Looks like they are still within the legal boundary though.
I'm not sure this is the way the excise works but who am I to complain. Thanks.

That 350k is going to go quick with the code posted here :) .. Think I need to start my own still and farm offshoots of businesses to other family and friends … not that I expect this is occurring here in anyway ;)

Alcohol is actually very cheap to produce. The most expensive part is tax making up about 80% of the cost of the product normally. Google Australian liquor excise.

Yep, current tax rate is $105.98/liter of pure alcohol for spirits, plus GST after that
So for this gin, if they had to pay excise, it would be
0.7 (700 ml) * 0.4 (40% alcohol) * $105.98 * 1.1 (gst) = $32.64 additional tax

That's a pretty steep discount and not being advertised on their website. Is this meant to be a staff only discount or something? Just a bit cautious after the Honey controversy.

my thoughts exactly… gonna find out soon enough.
i'm sure as hell not paying $80 a bottle for vodka, though
Ahhh the Australian mindset it's really a wonderful thing. Don't spend your hard-earned money on a nice bottle of Grey Goose that you can savior and enjoy but spend $25 on bathtub vodka to get drunk and throw up your guts.

Savour*
and the fact that you mention Grey Goose is actually hilarious.
https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/grey-goose-greatest-garbage-b…

@qvntmflx: Perception is a wonderful thing isn't it. Sub Grey Goose for any so called 'premium' vodka of choice then.
I actually really like this deal even though the company is a tad bit shady, alcohol should be this cheap even for premium spirits.
Excise tax in this country is ridiculous it's no wonder we have black markets everywhere.

Is anything worth $80 when most of that price is normally tax though?
This special price is essentially just (semi legal) tax evasion, not a lower quality product necessarily.

@wetsandwich: Eye of the beholder really, but I would say yes there are some alcohol brands that are worth paying more than $80 for.
As I said I approve this deal, alcohol is way too expensive in this country, excise tax is ridiculous. Alcohol should be 30% to 50% cheaper than it is.

vodka is literally just neutral spirit, there's nothing to "savior" about it.
i'm using 8 bottles as a base to make 38l of lemon seltzer for a party, i'll make sure i send you an invite, you sound heaps of fun…

I got it as an SMS offer as a previous customer. It specifically said to share it :-)

Yeah there goes my NY resolution to reduce my drinking…. thanks Op :)
It was mission impossible anyway.
For vodka - buy NGS for a few bucks a litre, dilute with RO water, bottle it and claim excise.
As for the gin, repeat process but macerate with botanicals (or run it through a still with a basket if you're lucky) and call it gin. Bottle it and claim excise.
Not sure if these guys are doing that, but as much as that process is highly unethical - its definitely a way some folk have figured out how to make easy (dodgy) money.

How is it unethical in the slightest? They're providing budget liquor at budget prices. Unless it's somehow unhealthier, then what's the problem?

How is it unethical? Buying NGS (Neutral Grain Spirit) for next to nothing, adding water then bottling it up and selling for almost pure profit? Abusing an excise rebate set up to support struggling micro-distilleries to keep them afloat in a highly competitive market. Then when you hit your $350k rebate you start a new company.
I'm all for a bargain, hence why I'm here - but thats not ethical if thats what they are doing.
Anyway, its an industry issue, not a bargain issue - and this deal certainly is a bargain.

It's not unethical because all they're doing is allowing the customer to dodge the insane, unethical tax excise gouge on customers for once in their lives. If they make a profit off it in the process, then I see zero issue with that. They're not breaking the law, either.
You think DM, Liqourland, BWS aren't buying NGS, adding water, bottling it, and selling it for 'almost pure profit' ? The only difference is they add an extra margin on top for tax.

This discount is fairly standard for these guys - not really sure how legal their supposed duty-free loophole is, but have bought from them a half dozen times and the worst I can say is a) shipping can be a little slow and b) there's one or two stinkers among the gin flavours. Otherwise, perfectly serviceable spirits for mixing.

Which gin flavours are stinkers?

Forestis and Queensland Dry are my favourites

Thanks for the Forestis and Queensland Dry suggestions. Got one of both. 1 x Vodka and 2 x Gins for $98 delivered. Worth a shot.

@HcNguyen111: You’re welcome :)
One time I got 10 x 700ml bottles of vodka, gin, Captain Moreton Spiced Rum and my favourite - Brown Snake Rhum for $200 + delivery
that deal sold out very quickly, so good.

What gins would you recommend out of their range?

Forestis and Queensland Dry are my favourites

Damn you OP!! I just had to get 1x Vodka and 2x Gin. The arm twisting was too painful.

Sweet, thanks OP. Just stocked up!

Thanks team, this will join my stack of Fonzie tins!

Cheers op got some not expecting too much but hey cheap booze

Oh hey it's Queensland Distillery. I've had some too good to be true email offers from them in recent months. They've always ended up being legitimate but the taste has been hit and miss.
I'll give this lot a try. My bar will be overflowing after the Cocktail Porter deal. Worst case it's cheap booze for mixing.

Happy to support any loophole in our obscene liquor taxation laws. Our nanny state attitudes to tobacco only benefit organised thug criminals that target kids with vapes and encourage street shootings and store bombings. prohibition never works.

I just got a "picking order" email with tracking. That's a good sign.

How quick is delivery? Will it arrive in SA by Saturday?

Unlikely. Says 8-12 business days to Syd

Thank OP!
Order 4 bottles of Vod
Thank you, ordered one of each Gin.

Thanks.ordered some.

Thanks op. Ordered a few.

Thanks OP, got some for easy gifts.

There goes my veganuary.
