ALDI employees getting ready to buy these from the back room before they ever make the shelves

    • +12

      I don't recon…

These are not great. These with Tizen are awful.

You can buy the same 70" screen (arguably better AIWA) with Google TV or Web OS for $499 most days of the week.

Also comes with a 90 day returns policy vs Aldi's 60.

Does anyone actually like Tizen? I also assume this means no Dolby Vision support either.

      • +2

Agree, Google TV just makes it that much easier to sideload things (stremio in particular)

      • +7

70" for $499??? no you cannot lol

        • Yesterday there were multiple 70 inch entry level tv options via everyday marketplace + cashback.

          • +1

@tunzafun001: quick search on ozb no 70" at 499 or lower. What planet are you on?

Marketplace is second hand? this is brand new.

            strange.

            • @jsvr: No, marketplace is not necessarily second hand; it's the new problem of the Internet (well, not that new), eBay, Amazon, Market place (WW) … all platforms, the platform owners make a mint (BIG tech), the actual retailers are much smaller and can't compete outside the market places or walled gardens owned by BIG tech.

              • +2

@affinity: so you mean individuals who claim its new but no receipt, no warranty. Or you mean grey imports or small stores that can literally disappear and you wont be able to get easy warranty done?

Any links to legit stores with warranty??

                • @jsvr: A market place may very well sell brand new; but they need to provide proper receipts and they need to be held accountable under Australian Consumer Law (ACL).

Which brings another problem, ACL is terribly bad for small business as it doesn't take many faulty products to give grief and if the original manufacturer or wholesaler won't come to the party, then the retailer goes bust quickly.

If you are thinking about "marketplace" being eBay (ordinary people, not shops) and/or Gumtree, then sure, they are much more likely to be secondhand or even "new", but without proper retail protections.

                • @jsvr: I'm not currently in the market for a new TV. I have no idea who is selling them second hand and/or doing grey imports (I avoided Kogan for it's practices for a very long time and don't care to shop with them now either). TV offers do interest me, more from an observer pov, although I am more interested in TVs that are energy efficient and I am not so much interested in the underlying OS, so long as it doesn't interfere with the TV being used as a simple display with reasonable speakers.

And I agree about retailers disappearing, it is a problem of small guy versus BIG retail, it's tough to retail if you are small and BIG retail doesn't fail easily; they do fail, but mostly due to change of ownership situation and bad investment choices (such as what happened to Dick Smith Electronics stores, the online brand was purchased by Kogan, but otherwise Dick Smith is finished).

If I am buying a mobile, grey imports have become a huge problem in AU due to the way the 000 situation has been handled with 3G shutdown; it's a disaster. Either own a mobile sanctioned by an AU network provider (probably sold by them), or your mobile might have network access removed. Anyway, this is off topic for the TV.

            • @jsvr: Woolworths Everyday Marketplace on the 9th Jan… and planet Earth… I think

              • @tunzafun001: my bad I thought you mean facebook marketplace.

I had a look at woolworths marketplace, theres currently no listing for 70" tv. Further to that, when I pull up KG superstore which is one of the biggest guys from there, they have a 3.4 star rating. You can filter the ratings related to warranty and refunds for an idea of what people are saying…

I don't know maybe it's just me, but for a TV, I'd much rather buy from the main retailers (although yes I agree I do not like how smaller retailers disappearing). You get proper warranty, and proper support.

Which is why $499 for a 70" TV from Aldis is a very good price… and not comparable to what you said about able 'to buy one for $499 most days of the week.' is specifically my issue with what you said..

And to whoever cares enough to care about having webOS/gTV over Tizen, would already have a firestick or google streamer etc..

                • @jsvr: That's more about the search engine on Everyday Marketplace (It's rubbish). The 70" and 75" TVs are definitely there. Just search TV and scroll.. 70" Tv will yield nothing.
The problem with Tizen is it takes over the whole TV. Again, I tried to find a basic backlight control (crucial on the cheaper TVs, as they are all over driven by default), hence them dieing quickly.
With Tizen I couldn't dim the backlight. Could just be me. But I thought Tizen was just awful.

      • +2

        Does anyone actually like Tizen?

        Does it matter?

As long as it connects up to your laptop / has an HDMI, who cares. No one likes any TV OS.

        • -1

I couldn't find any settings to calibrate the picture (crucial to reduce to change the backlight and curves on these), and you dont have access to many apps.

Samsung are being killed by it, and it will be pulled any day and will have no server/ be useless in 2 years.

        • It matters, My Samsung Smart monitor m7c (the home screen looks like this aldi one) drops out on a hdmi, usb c signal every now and then. Also restart itself often ( 1 or 2 times in 3 hours).

      • I use the google tv box anyway . Plugs in nice to this baby

      • Id take a used (2018+) 65" Samsung Smart TV at the same price or less any time over one of these.

    • The GAP is goat

      • 😂

    • +3

ALDI employees probably have better sense then to buy these. It's not exactly a good tv.

    • And post on facebook market.

    • ring ahead, speak to manager. last thing an employee wants is something else to haul around imo.

  • +8

    70" perfect for your caravan

  • That is cheap considering the size! I belive this is the exact Model - 70” 4K Ultra HD webOS Smart TV ATV70UHDW-0625 Happy to be corrected but the ALDI website doesn't mention model, this one seems to fit the price range

    • +5

Can't be the OP is Tizen, your link is webOS

    • +3

Nah, that's the prior Aldi TV (better).

  • +1

A large number are likely to be returned within 60 days. The picture quality is poor.

    • +1

How does it rate vs a TCL or ffalcon which I find decent

      • +1

These are the worst of the worst of the worst

      • Nowhere near a TCL, not sure FFaclon.
But with the 60 day return policy, there’s no risk in getting one just to try.

        • +4

That's a motza of screen to lug to and fro just for the experience. Especially if haven't a truck on hand.

    • A lot of reviews saying the screen stopped working "within two months".

      • +2

        Great that there's a 60 days warranty

        • +3

The warranty is a lot longer than 60 days

  • +3

    Tizen: Satan's favourite tv os

  • +5

Tizen OS no Thanks a big NO NO

    • +4

so just use a Firestick or Google TV chromecast dongle with it

      • For those that still watch free to air, if you use a chromecast etc, you're not able to use the TV's remote, and jumping between channels would be by switching apps, is that right?

        • +1

Cant speak for all make/models, but i use samsung remote to navigate my Q65T and firestick. Matter of selecting the correct HDMI slot for firestick and it will continue navigation there

        • +3

You can (assuming you mean an android tv stick or similar), but not natively. You could install Tivimate or similar IPTV player then load a playlist like this: https://iptv-org.github.io/iptv/countries/au.m3u

Playlist can be found on Facebook for even more content.

    • +1

Does it matter? Any TV OS sucks.

Plug in your own dongle or Laptop

      • +2

Not if it’s An Android Tv

        • -1

Doesnt matter if the TV itself is a slow POS.

Just connect a laptop or a PROPER dongle, TVs are usually sh it.

  • +2

Much better to save up more money if possible (I appreciate there’s lots of people who aren’t in a position to just buy an expensive TV), opt for a smaller size (65”) and get something like the TCL C8 or C7. Much better TV’s.

Nothing inherently wrong with these TV’s but up scaling from SD, screen uniformity, on board sound, processing HD image, lack of HDR, and brightness is not going to be the best.

One need not buy an OLED, but these panels are cheap for a reason.

Just saying. If someone wants a huge screen and they just want to watch some TV or whatever, no doubt these would do the job, just saying don’t expect too much.

  • No HDR is weird these days even on a cheap tv

  • +10

This TV is ok. Great if you have young kids that will most likely break the TV anyway. To not look poor in front of my friends and family, I have removed the Bauhn branding and stuck a Sony logo on mine. Here is the link to the Sony logo if people also want it. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005009677403572.html?

    • +7

Is really that serious? 😂 Your friends need to get their priorities in check if they're really judging the brand of TV you own

      • Check his location - he's in Sydney. Explains everything.

      • +1

This is hilarious ..I just bought 5 to put on all my TVs and hifi ….the Mrs will think I'm nuts but I will be laughing in my head for months at my own joke …..Sony branded everything here we come

    • My kids and many many others have never broke any tv’s.

      What’s with your kids?

      • A friend of mine's kids just recently accidentally broke their TV. Their apartment is small and space to move around is limited. If you have several kids, who are very active, in a small space it's kind of a recipe for disaster.

    • Sony TVs don't use the Tizen operating system, they use Google TV. If your rich friends turned on your TV and saw it they would know you're cheap and you'll be ostracized. Do you have any Samsung stickers you can use instead?

      • +6

        They're rich not smart

  • Built-in Speaker, good to know.

    • +6

      Frequency response: present
      Maximum power output: yes
      Supported formats: WAV

  • +3

Honestly great price which I’m sure for most people will do the job great. If you’re looking at questions like “does it have Dolby Vision” move on. This is a massive TV for rock bottom price. Fantastic. And keeps the rest of with our $5k tv purchases in line TbH.

Even the complaint about Tizen.. I cant stand my LG and it’s advertising rubbish throughout. Even my Samsung does it a bit.

    • Could have bought the JVC, Aiwa or EKO TV yesterday for the exact same price after cashback and they support HDR, and the JVC supports Dolby Vision.
But…the upscaling engine is Minecraft and the speakers are a tin cup.
I saw 2gb ram and 16gb storage (no idea how that compares to other TV OS's?

  • -2

Bauhn is good made in Germany quality? Not unlike Blaupunkt or Telefunken?

    • +1

      Same OEM i'm afraid.
Big W have this exact model under the EKO label. Was $500 and came with 10k everyday reward points.
      Had a play in store.
It made the JVC look and feel excellent…

      • It was $479 but without the 10k points.

The 75" EKO with Google TV was $599 with 10k points. I got this one actually.

But yeah WebOS is really good.

        • Yeah that's it, but combine with Everyday Market cashback for 28% / $100 cap.

          So 75" (bigger) - $499+ $50 in Woolies bucks + Google OS + full HDR support….

The JVC was $50 more (no woolies bonus points), but was QLED and supported Dolby Vision and used half the power (more modern panel).

I'm waiting for a deal on that.

But can see this at $499 is normal price now. With Tizen, no HDR old school panel…pretty ordinary.

          • @tunzafun001: The EKO 75" that was $599 (which is now $649) hasn't ever been listed on EM though?

Which JVC are you talking about?

The Aiwa 70" WebOS on EM (if you happen to catch it in stock) is pretty good for $599 - $100 ($150 if you're lucky) + delivery. I had the Linsar version of this from TGG which was my first experience with WebOS. I found it much better than the Google TV menu interface (like adjusting Picture and Sound settings). And it had a smooth motion setting which I loved. I actually like the PQ of that more than the 75" EKO I have now.

            • @CVonC: The EM search engine SUX!
Search 75 EKO TV and it won't be there…
But look at a random TV, scroll to the bottom and it pops up. But price has changed and points bonus is gone.

The problem with the AiWA, EKO, Bauhn, Lindsar, Blaupunkt, Toshiba is the back light control.

It bleeds bad and therefore wastes energy. The 65 EKO or AiWA is rated at 530kwh per year.

A 75 Nanocell LG is 320kwh per year. So you might end up spending an extra $200 a year on power. Might as well spend $200 on a TV that uses the backlight properly. Works out cheaper after 3 years, and looks way better.

It can be ok if you only watch TV at night. I have a 12yr old Chinesium TV in the back room (4K and 3D support). LG panel. I turn the back light down 90% and it looks fine. Uses 49 watts. But during the day, there is no contrast. It's dark.

I did see the new Toshiba 75 is now rated at 350kwh per year. But Rtings have it as one of the worst TVs of the year. Looks like they simply made the backlight dim by default to get a low energy sticker.

The Toshiba is plastered with Regaza motion and upscaling engine …but must actually be rubbish.

    • +3

      Made in Germong Prefecture, China

      • +1

        Cool that's Germany in Chinese

  • +1

    Built-in speaker!
    USB media playback!!

    • +1

Haha yes the built in speaker, hell yeah it's party Time.

  • What a great price for 70".
Sure, its not going to be amazing quality - I have personally used SONY, LG and recently Hisense, FFalcon, TCL - I can see the difference in quality but very happy with my Hisense 75". I am not a TV fanatic who requires OLED QLED etc. so just for basic viewing (News, Youtube, Netflix) - it does the job.
TCL and FFalcon are obviously worse in terms of lag/load time but still works fine for parents/IP.

    • +1

TCL is a big Chinese brand, so is Hisense. When it comes to pic quality, they should be similar - at least their mid range to top end products.

Or are you talking about the smart TV function?

    • My partners Sony is slow as F, a real frustrating experience and we sometimes end up just doing something else.

      It's only 5 years old. Bravia something…

Is this normal for modern TVs?

(My last experience with TVs were during the analogue days, just switch on and that's it, not smart TVs)

      • Get the new google tv box and plug in …xomi also do an official Google tv box which is good , but the google brand will be best long term ….both are fast as feck …make any tv better ….the google tv box also has extras for you home network devices .

  • when aldi first started in au i bought a 42” standard size at the time , had it for over 10 yrs it was excellent with small kids etc , i dont know how good they are now

    • +1

Hmm, if you bought a 42" TV when Aldi first started in AU, it would have cost like $8,000. That's what those plasmas were selling for back in 2002?

      • from memory it was about $3000 , a lot of money for a ‘dumb’ plasma screen by todays prices

        • +1

Might have been around 2005 if it was that price.

  • +2

$400 somehow always gets you way more TV than you think it should.

Imagine if the "base model" Excel still existed for $12,999 and all you missed out on was bigger wheels or whatever.

    • +1

*Modern smart TVs are sold at low prices, sometimes near or below manufacturing cost, because manufacturers generate revenue through post-purchase monetization strategies.

A primary method is the collection and sale of user data, including viewing habits, app usage, and location, which is valuable to advertisers and data brokers. This data is gathered via technologies like Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), which tracks what content is watched across streaming services, cable, and physical media.

The practice is widespread, with companies like Vizio, Roku, and Samba TV involved in data collection and monetization, and some manufacturers even sell data to third parties without explicit user consent.

The consensus across multiple sources is that data collection plays a significant role in subsidizing the low cost of smart TVs.

*AI summary of why TV’s are so cheap these days

  • +3

These are bad. Stay away from Aldi TV's. I work in an Aldi Distribution Centre.. I'd say more get returned than not.

    • Many returned due to failure or dissatisfaction?

      • +1

About 50 50 on that, some arrive DOA. Some seem just fine.

    • What's the usual reason for return?

      • +2

        It's a 50 50 between failure and dissatisfaction.

    • @churningNburning

What happens to them out of interest?

I'd recon 80+% would still be fully functional… Just the motion processing and Tizen OS sucks..

So what happens to these perfectly working, but not up to standard TVs?

      • +1

Like said above I'd estimate about 50 percent failure rate obviously meaning the other 50 percent are actually functioning as they should (for a budget tv)

I believe they are sent back to the supplier.. They're basically re boxed, put on a random truck and we never see them again.

    • Maybe I was just lucky, but the only Aldi TV I've purchased worked really well for many years; it was power efficient for it's time, but later TVs much more so. My Aldi TV was FHD, the replacement 4K TV used about the same power; it was an LG, the screen failed 5 years in and I had it replaced under ACL (Australian Consumer Law), it's been going strong since.

I'm not sure you are saying everything that needs to be said; is it 50 / 50 of the returned TVs or total TVs sold? And of the returns, were there other common factors that brought them down?

  • These budget brands should just focus on panel quality.
Id rather use TV box like Google Streamer or Apple TV.

    • The panel is excellent..they are only made by a few manufacturers. Since this is Tizen based, it's 99% likely a Samsung panel.

But the motion processing, upscaling, colour reproduction, back light control, power supply is done by Jo Bloggs back yard, Germong China..

      • Samsung's been priced out of LCD panels by China (accelerated by IP theft and so on) so it's unlikely that it's a Samsung panel.

Tizen is an open source OS (unlike Android TV), which is why it's being used.

  • +4

Can't wait to use the headphone jack. Cheaper than a phone for music

  • I missed out on the last 70" Aldi had on clearance at my local store. Glad I waited because this is cheaper. I think it might fit in my bedroom but may stick out a little and partially cover my walk in wardrobe door
