Assistance with PS5 Compatible SSD

Hi All,

I know little about hard drives etc so was just after some help.

I have 2 PS5's at home. One of them I've had a Seagate PS5 branded 2TB M2 SSD in for a while with no issues in terms of speed or reliability. Unfortunately with the recent increase in prices of storage I cheaped out and bought an Atrix branded one that was slow and last night began freezing after only 5 days of having it.

Now I'm thinking it's best to just bite the bullet and buy a Seagate, WD or Samsung SSD. I know historically speaking it's bad value but is this Seagate 2TB SSD for $349 (Which looks identical to the one I have in my first PS5) pretty much about as good a price as you can expect right now for a PS5 compatible SSD with heatsink: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0C62KKMGH?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_f…

    Both will work fine but the Samsung is a faster, higher-end device.

      Which has no real world difference in a PS5. Anything about 5,500 MB/s is meaningless in that context.

        The Atrix was writing at about 250MB/s & freezing a lot.

        Basically just want something that works. The Seagate looks to have a better TBW warranty, while the Samsung appears faster, but I honestly have zero clue about the reputation of these brands or anything else to split them. All I know is the existing Seagate PS5 SSD in my other PS5 works well.

          Anything above 5,500 MB/s, is Gen 4, and has a heatsink works fine.

          Get the Seagate you already know works and saves you $40.

          What actually makes a real world difference on a PS5 is whether the SSD has a DRAM cache. If it does not, then what matters is how large the pSLC cache is, how quickly that cache is exhausted and what the sustained write speed drops to once it is.

          The Atrix likely has no DRAM cache and once the pSLC cache has been exhausted it's dropped to a slower speed. A lot of QLC drives will get similar speeds or worse. For a DRAMless SSD the amount of cache varies. It could be 80GB sustained write or it could be 200GB.

          Ideally you want to try and find reviews that mention how much writing it can handle until exhausted and Techpowerup may mention the same.

          It's important to mention that many budget SSDs will say it has HMB. Unfortunately the PS5 doesn't use this.

    Thanks all for your help.

    Ended up going the Seagate as from experience the same drive works very well in my other PS5.

    Lucky I grabbed it, Amazon just increased the price by a further $200, officeworks sold out and Harvey Norman is charging $599 for it. Hopefully the ridiculous AI increase in SSD's/Ram ends soon as this is just insane.

    $349 was already $150 more than I paid for the same drive 2 years ago, let alone paying triple…..

    The first thing to do would be to go back to whoever you bought the Atrix one from. You have a warranty. But it may not get you your money back, just a replacement Atrix.

      EB refunded it today with no issues. They were really good about it.
