Best and only ice cream I'd buy from a supermarket

    • +14

Spot on. Objectively the best with the only one above 15% milk fat content in any supermarket and by far and away the highest "milk fat grams per litre" which I use to decide. ie (g/L)×(milk fat %/100) which you could call heft × richness. HD is 138g/L. Next best is Norco Cape Byron waaaay off at 95g/L.

Just measuring milk fat the Aldi Kapiti Vanilla Bean comes in at 14% which is … tolerable in an life-threatening emergency?? (say you were stuck on a raft in an ocean and the oil rig you float to has an Aldi on it)

Also important to mention the only brands which include egg yolk are HD, Sara Lee and Kirkland. I haven't tried Kirkland but its cream % is on par with HD although not sure of milk fat %.

Ben & Jerry's make half-decent ice cream but then stuff it with filler so you hardly get any actual ice cream.

      • What about Golden North vanilla ice cream.

        • +2

That has fillers, someone mentioned it in another post on ice cream.

        • Not good

          • @Genepi: What's the negatives? I'm not an expert, just seems decent when compared to many others.

      • +2

The only one that has milk fat above 15% is vanilla, at 16%. The rest are 15% or below. check the 3rd line below the ingredients.

        • Which is fine because they need to squeeze extra ingredients in. Vanilla is the best way to measure as a ‘baseline’ due to its homogeneity.

      • +1

I recognise your icecream passion :)

    • Better than Kapiti ice cream from ALDI (made in NZ)?

      • Yes. Kapiti looks third best behind Kirkland but it’s a fair way back.

    • To be fair, it's the only actual ice cream that's available at supermarkets.

Craving for that new matcha flavour…

    • Matcha Green Tea seems to be listed but price is incorrect. It is currently unavailable at Coles.

      • it is $11.88 for now.
purchased on last Friday 9th Jan at Coles

        • Which store as it shows unavailable when I added random postcodes? I'm in Perth but haven't checked in-store.

          • @trixieb: Coles Rochedale QLD

            • @simon 84: Thanks. In the Coles app > In store > Coles Rochedale QLD 4123, it states "Currently unavailable". It seems stock is default to "unavailable".

@Oooozzzz Will check in-store at my local and hope it's available at $6.75. Will update post.

            • @simon 84: The matcha green tea is now showing as in stock at Rochedale in the Coles app. Unfortunately it is still full price at $11.88.

              • @trixieb: I know.

I have not finished my current one from last Friday.
                Taste is pretty good.
but not must have with full price

      Made in France?

Häagen-Dazs is an American ice cream brand, established by Reuben and Rose Mattus in The Bronx in 1960, owned by Froneri, a joint venture between Nestlé and PAI Partners. Starting with only three flavors: vanilla, chocolate, and coffee, the company opened its first retail store in Brooklyn, on November 15, 1976. The Pillsbury food conglomerate bought Häagen-Dazs in 1983, and now the brand is sold worldwide.

@bargain77: yes i buy the belgian chcocolate and its made in france, not sure about other flavours.

          • +4

@bargain77: American brand but Made in France.

Since 1992, most of the world's Häagen-Dazs products have been manufactured at a plant in Tilloy-lès-Mofflaines, France that is now controlled by General Mills.

      • yes, Made in France

Just bought Kapiti vanilla ice cream and other Aldi's goods through Doordash with discount promo, so cheaper than direct purchase in Aldi :P Maybe I'll buy Häagen-Dazs on weekend.

Waiting for PureVPN Italy cashback profit withdrawal this week (and PureVPN cashback in other countries have been confirmed), not bad to cover other bargains/purchases ;-)

Vanilla & Coffee lowest sugar at 20%, the rest come in at 25%..

    • so true. tried most of the flavors, too sweet too overpowering … why all the hype???

      • +2

Because of the ingredients, or lack of filler ingredients.

    • I tried coffee flavour for the first time, it’s really good! Not too strong of a coffee flavour

Mango & Raspberry are an old flavour

Where did the caramel biscuit and cream (aka biscoff) flavour go? That is my all time favourite ice cream and what got me hooked onto biscoff. Hagen Daz’ version of biscoff has always been superior to actual biscoff even.

Got the ninja creami and im making them myself with protein powder added to them

    • What's your recipe? I have just starting making my own with the Ninja

  • On sale at Woolies now for $8, so this is pretty good deal. The strawberry one is basically cream and 21% strawberries.

  • No rum and raisin ice cream. Only at woolies.

    • Noooooooooo!

as someone with IBD who avoids maltodextrin and carrageenan (among others), I'm surprised to find these noted as I haven't found anyone else aware of and avoiding these additives. props, OP!
