Points earning matrix is available here - click the "find out more"
Essentially need to hold couple/family gold cover and top extras for 180 days to get the full 120,000 + 30,000 points.

Couples/Family Bronze Hospital + Basics Extras only yields 40,000 (32,000 + 8,000) in which case, Medibank 6 weeks free plus $200 worth of points seems like better value (assuming quotes being similar)

    • Yeah, looking at the top options it would be about $1600 over 2 months to get about 120,000 in points. The points value is I guess worth about 6 weeks free in that sense, especially if you could redeem it on flights, but it is hard to justify.

In the past I think the points were based on the level of cover at the 60 day mark so you could sign up on a cheap plan, then bump it up, claim lots of points, then bump it down or cancel. I think they've closed this loophole so the deal is much less attractive.

You saved my time. Thanks heaps

Bumping up the cover on the 57th day hack, is that still working?

    • +1

Guess not as you need to hold the same cover for 60 continuous days.

      • Yes but still not sure if they just updated the T&Cs or have actually patched the system.

Holding overpriced insurance for 180 days to get 150k points is a daft idea.

Holding it for 60 days for 120k points, ehhh maybe?

    Lets see

120k points is for family/couples holding gold level hospital cover.

What's that cost? well a quick quote on the qantas site says $800/month.
What's that compared to other providers? a quick quote on bupa says $600/month.

I'm not going into fine print to figure out how the two stack up, but they're both gold and one is $200 more than the other.

Hold that for 2 months and you're overpaying by $400 to make 120k points. Which actually isn't terrible.
But that assumes you've already got and are paying for hospital cover today, and if your premium is lower; say $500/month then you're overpaying by $600*

If you don't have insurance at all, then you're now paying $1600 that you didn't before to get 120k points; which again is a bad idea.

    • Yeah the overpay comes from 1600 - your current cover. On average you are looking at about 800 overpay for 120k points which isn't that terrible either when you look at it. 120ks cash value is 1200 but it's redemption value ranges from 1.5c-3c which is 1800- 3600

  • How strict are they on the 12 month thing? Could a partner end up joining and it would work?

So as a Single person, the most I can earn is 60k points?

    whats their exclusion period?
