$200 extra for an extra 128gb in 2026

It’s called the apple pricing ladder.

  • am I correct in that wifi models have no built in GPS?

    • +3

      Yes

    • So they cannot track you?

      • Can still be tracked through WiFi and Bluetooth if you use 'find my'.

        • Actually every device is being tracked via wifi, bluetooth and cellular towers, at all times whilst in operation, regardless of app activity, and even when you have wifi and bluetooth turned off in the menu.
Every device, Android or iphone, periodically sends out a signal in the background searching for available networks nearby in whats called a .global title' aka a handshake to verify the type of networks, devices and whether it is part of the trusted network alliance via protocols such as SS7.
In this signal, is unique identifiers for your device, as well as the nearby towers and wifi signal it detects.
Your position is then triangulated via ping, the time it takes the signal to reach these devices. Your location can be pinpointed within 2-3m with just 3 separate signals.

      • haha if only, need to run a nav app that requires GPS

Looks like same price at Amazon.

  • Is A16 capable enough to run multiple tabs in chrome and handle games like hill climb and hotwheels?

    • Yes, the A16 is in the iPhone 15 lineup.

    • +1

it is capable, I have an iPad pro M2 and bought this for my son. single core score was pretty much similar and multi core was 10000 on M2 vs. 6170 on A16. I have tried multiple tabs, no issues, my son nly plays minecraft and minecraft education and some other light games with no issues. haven't treid games you mentioned though.

I like mine, they’re really nice, I recently upgraded from a 9th gen, battery life is a little bit worse on this one than the last one but I live with it.

  • Plays Balatro well

  • How’s the screen on this for a primary media consumption device?

    • -2

It’s a cheap lcd screen so what can you expect?

    • Bought one today. Nice and sharp, smooth and excellent viewing angles. Not quite as bright as I hoped though - 500 nits vs 1000 nits minimum for my iPhone 14 Pro.

  • That’s annoying. Paid $527 on Friday last week.

  • Keen to wall-mount one and run as an Apple Home dashboard but I’m still on the fence if it’s worth the it for $450+ (after gift cards, etc. are considered).

If anyone else had done this, would very much like to hear your thoughts.

I’m also curious what other devices may be released this year, if they potentially release a HomePod like device with a screen.

    • Absolutely overkill.

I’ve wall mounted one for home assistant. But I’ve done it using basic wall mounts that allow me to easily remove the tablet.

There’s a few times a year especially holidays when it becomes an e-reading device instead. So it can do double duties.

I don’t think Apple home etc will ever really be any good as there will always be devices that you want to use but can’t. That’s where home assistant with all its open source and community support comes in. It will give you many, many more wall mounted dashboard options too. The Lenovo xaoxin works well.

      • Yeah I think if I went down the Home Assistant route, I'd buy a cheaper tablet (like the Lenovo suggested) instead.

Anyway, something to think about. Cheers for the reply.

Thank you, purchased. Son will be very happy upgrading from 64gb ipad mini 5.

All colours are $477 at Big W, so you can price beat at OW for $453.15

    • Office works has now dropped their price to $477
