I hadn’t tried a base model for some years (my main iPad is an M1 Pro) - and I gotta say after some hands on time with the a16, like wow, it’s actually pretty damn nice for a $500 tablet? 10/10 can recommend.

    • Wouldn't M series have better longevity and support? Although pricing is a different range

      • +2

        M1 smokes the A16

        • -1

And yeah performance would be night and day too

          • +8

@CocacolaBaby: You wouldn’t notice the difference with normal iPad use.

            • +1

@LanceVance: Agreed. I would never personally buy an iPad Pro with my own $ given I can't get enough value out of it, but I was given an M1 at work.

Bought my wife this one and while helping her set it up, I agree with this statement.

I think what OP means is that if you don’t have any specific reason to go with the M1, this base model will satisfy your needs.

        • +1

Yes - I should have clarified , my m1 still got maybe 5 years in it if i ever get around to replacing the battery. I was setting an a16 up for a gift

        • +3

100% - I really can’t personally see any reason for a general purpose user to go past the base model. The blue also is imo straight gorgeous.

@Jimothy Wongingtons: I bought the iPad Pro (M1) for like $1100 several years ago. It was for browsing and shit, I want everyone to judge me please.

            • +2

@TsundereGuy: If it makes u feel better, I did too - it was mainly for MTG arena tbh - but I actually do use it for work these days - though I will prob change back to a surface pro for work when my m1 iPad dies

            • @TsundereGuy: FaceID swings it for me
Just much quicker when shopping on Ozbargain…

              • @mdcsooty: Me being cheap and using a lenovo XXPP that's basically a tablet I use for flights only . After having it , I can't justify iPad costs

          • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Thinking about getting one since work won’t give me a pc or iPad yet expect me to read 50 bloody page documents in the field.
I’ll get blue due to your recommendation, would prefer FDE or coyote though…

              @mapax:

              fde

I feel like this needs to be in an email to Tim Cook (tcook@apple.com) asap - could capture a whole new market sector

              50 page

I routinely get contractors trying to show me plans (which were supposed to be printed a3) on like a 6 inch phone lol - I could see this potentially* being a big QoL improvement if you’re routinely dealing with long documents.

      • The laminated screen on the Airs & Pros is the big drawcard for me. After having one of them you will never go back to a base model.

  • Thanks OP, bought one for my mum who has a 7 year old iPad that she thinks is "good" still.

    • +5

Nothing wrong with my 6 year old 8th gen pad. Was almost swayed by this deal but no need, old one still works fine for what it’s used for.

      • +1

Not sure about 8th gen, but 7th gen is getting on… Stuck on iOS18 and a lot of apps are becoming unsupported now.

They do the job of scrolling social feeds and reading articles, but pretty laggy and basic beyond that. I think you'd be surprised how much of a jump 6-7 years of improvements is.

    • Well my mum has an ipad air 2 still working 11 years already

Still thinking if we should replace it

  • +2

Would these come with iOS 18? I want to upgrade but I really hate the new multitasking setup in iOS 26.

    • Bought one today, they come with 26.1

  • +3

Thank you the honmoon is sealed

Bought one of these for a similar price last year. Very good for the money.

I got the below pencil which can attach to the top of the iPad magnetically and has tilt sensitivity, for a fraction of the price of the real thing:
