  • Do your research before getting such a small inverter, takes forever to fully charge and more importantly can only discharge 5kw for house use. If you have an electric hot water heater (larger tanks have 3.6kw element) and want to cook on an induction stove or even boil the kettle (2+kw) on a cloudy day, you will already be drawing from the grid if solar can't make up the excess. The 5kw discharge also makes it hard to maximise plans such as GloBird zerohero or flow power as you want to export 10kw from 6-8pm, but you won't be able to as the 5kw includes house loads.

    • In WA, max output to grid is 5KW and 10KW max internally (1 phase) so thats what most of them will sell you. https://www.solarquotes.com.au/grid-connection/wa/

      • You get paid so little for grid output, better to get 10kw inverter and charge your own batteries with your solar.

      • Yes that's fair, get 10kw in some areas of the eastern states. Either way, if you have a 10kw inverter you can export more (capped at 5kw) to cover your daily supply charge during peak hours alongside being able to use 5kw of house loads whilst maximising exports. I prefer to at least export enough to cover the supply fee so you have no bill.

    • I agree — it’s better to get Tesla 13.5 kW battery for $14,900 installed instead of unknown 5 kW brand that may pose a fire risk.

      • Powerwalls are some of the worse value for money.

        Goodwe ESA 9.999kw Hybrid Inverter with ~33kw of Batteries for ~11k in brisbane is a much better alternative.

        • Or FoxESS 41.93kWh battery with 10kWh inverter for sub $7K in Victoria. And likely DC coupled.

        • He didn't say it was good value, it's probably the most expensive choice, he's saying many of these brands are made in China to different standards and some are new companies - hard to say either way right now unless you can predict the future.

  • Good points. If you change to 10kw inverter are you not automatically excluding yourself from exporting to the grid? Thought you could only have a 5kwh inverter on western power network otherwise you get capped at 1.5kwh export (i may be wrong so happy to be corrected).

    • I have a 10kw inverter with 60kwh battery and 15kw solar. It only exports at 5kw to the grid. Pay the extra for the 10kw inverter. Very very easy to go over 5kw usage. Aircon, hot water, oven, kettleetc.
      I have had the system for 3 months and my bill is $20/month.

      • Are you 3 phase?
        I have 10kw inverter on single phase and capped at 1.5kw output to grid (which I get paid absolutely nothing for but don't care as you point out 10kw inverter is farore valuable with high usage).

    • With how little they pay you for exporting to the grid (like 3.3 cents here in VIC), it's not worth worrying about. Better to future proof yourself with a 10kw inverter or bigger.

  • Did I see the new growatt batteries can be added on to the old GLB batteries? Previously you had to bin your perfectly working batteries.

  • Im just about to add a battery to my 6.6kwh solar setup is there any issues going from 5kwh inverter to a 10kwh inverter if im not upgrading the solar for a few years?
