Do you think you will get any of the USFF desktops with equivalent specs?

I had been concerned for a while that we would see a huge drop off of those desktops post 10th gen as Covid placed greater demand for laptops over desktops.

    • Also keen on this

  • Non touch version of the 5520.

  • what about 5420 or 54xx series?

  • Looks quite sleek and very affordable! Just wondering if the installed windows is authentic or pirated? risk of being hacked is my only concern.
Also very interested in how long its battery last for media playing

    • +26

Laptops from brands like Dell, at least in Australia, pretty much always include a copy of Windows attached to the hardware.

      • Thanks for that, so there is an os partition.

        • +8

Even without the OS partition there's usually the ability to install windows again. I'm a bit out of touch about how it works but I think it's even a serial number or something in the BIOS that allows it to install.
If you're concerned, and even just due diligence, you should be able to download a windows installer from dell or microsoft that'll work and have it from as close to known good as you can.

          • +9

            @d4zz4: Here's a link to the Installer. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11

Windows will automatically activate when connected during first use.

          • +5

@d4zz4: These Dell laptops have a restore function in the BIOS that downloads the Dell OEM Windows image and installs it too.

            • @tp0: That's awesome!

          • +2

@d4zz4: I bought this from the last deal, I did a fresh install of W11 from usb drive, deleted all the partitions and just let the install redo everything, the winkey is stored on the motherboard so it auto activated to win11pro

        • Not sure about this model, but my Dell laptops have an OS partition for going back to factory settings. You can re-partition the disk to use that space, if you want.

          • @bio: WinRE is standard in any Windows install.

            • @tp0: Being an enterprise grade laptop the COE would most likely be for win 11 pro. Another bonus without the AI c**p

              • @websterp: Is it time to open the Intel ME can of worms?

    • +1

It's hard to buy a Dell without a windows license…. even witt legit license, a pre installed window can have mal/spy-ware

    • +6

just format yourself if concerned with official iso. The license will be tied to the hardware.

Not sure what version of windows it comes with though. Home or Pro?

      • Latitudes come with Pro/Enterprise

        • +1

Makes sense. Can't see businesses rocking "Home" at the sweatshop

    • +5

Just activate with Epstein's windows 7 code. It's all over the internet. 😄

    • +4

Use the open-source scripts which even Microsoft support uses sometimes: https://github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts

    • +1

These are almost always former corporate machines so yes they'll have a genuine copy of windows.

    • +2

These are oem versions, nothing pirated

  • Thanks OP, got one.

  • +16

wow, 16gb ram. worth more than gold these days.

  • +1

I have been waiting for this deal

    • +2

Don't see much difference? The Dell has upgradeable ram.

      • Just pairing the dock. I would go for Dell if I didn't have another Lenovo set.

      • and touch screen

    • Thanks. Now I'm waiting for it as well.

  • Is it Backlit keyboard ?

    • +2

I got one in the last deal and mine wasn't, seems it was luck of the draw

      • +1

        Thanks for letting me know!

  • No discount for Graded B versions?

    • +1

I too want a laptop that has been treated roughtly as the more shock electronic components receive, the better.

      • Yeah, not always a guarantee. We run many that operate 24/7, they ingest a fair amount of dust but they are barely touched so externally they would appear perfect after a little clean up, but they'll have had a hard life.

  • @Calmago Hi OP,
is it possible to get a similar priced but small screen laptop at this price?

    • +15

Working on that in the next week or so. Will most likely by 5320 Models.

      • Thank you

      • Would also be keen on this

      • Also keen on a 14" or 13" option. Probably alone here but 2 in 1 would be nice as well.

        • +1

          @stephendrewz 5320 is 13in", 5420 being 14"

          @Calmago so 100% no-go on 5420's?
I may grab this just in case, you guys have been good with returns in the past. Backlight is a must for me, I've a few other questions but I'll put them in the notes at checkout so I don't run the risk of losing RAM upgrade ability. I've had 64GB Dominator 3200MHz RAM awaiting a laptop.

          Cheers

      • +1

me also - a lightweight small matt screen with TB4

        • Check out the Dynabooks selling on eBay. Dual thunderbolt and light as a feather. Comes with an Ethernet port. Pointer button like a Lenovo.

          • +1

@TightLikeThisx: Beware, you can I have RCcars with stronger plastic shells

            • @parad0x: Mine has a magnesium allow shell and is about half the weight of all my other laptops.

Definitely not rugged like my Thinkpad but if you can afford a $13 dollar sleeve from Kmart/Target it’s a great option.

              • @TightLikeThisx: Any Dynabook recommendations for year 9 kid?

              • @TightLikeThisx: I'm aware of its shell… I've had one from ACT and sent it back. Magnesium is a soft, weak metal. Yes it weighs under 1kg which is impressive for it's category, and it's got the best strength to wekbbt ratio of all the others due to this. That's precisely where the pros for.magneaium alloys ends.
It's weaker in every measurable way, than a generic aluminium alloy.

Unfortunately a.neoleene sleeve isn't going to improve anything more than a slightly cushioned landing, of about $13 worth of protection.

      • Waiting for it. Bring it on.

      • Would be keen to get this one. Hopefully no regrets from missing out on this deal and waiting for this

      • any updates to this?

      • Has anything come in for 13 or 14" laptops?

      • +1

        Hi @Calmago
Just checking if something like this is still in the pipeline?
        Cheers!

        • +1

          Not at this stage

          • +1

@Calmago: Any chance of that 14" deal soon? Or a repeat of this 15" deal for those who were holding out for the 14 one. School and uni are starting soon and for some already have. Some held off getting the 15 because they waited for the 14.. but we still need one.

            • @PsychopathicCult: I too am waiting for another deal like this but $299 so it's under the instant tax write off threshold.

            • @PsychopathicCult: Me too. I waited for 14 inch one. Looks like its not going to be available anytime soon.

      • The lighter more portable model is not going to happen? I've been checking Ozbargain for the post.

    • Is this covering what you're after?

    • +7

  • Says $549.00 for me.
Otherwise hard to resist to buy just another laptop ;-)

    • +3

      Apply the discount code

      • +1

whats the code its not listed in the OP

        • +1

          It is in the OP.

          5520JAN

  • how's this compared to a M1 macbook air for 450?

    • link please

      • Restocked here and there from their ebay outlet. Also same price from marketplace if you want the gamble (I dont mind). I need one for my partner to do Uni and the M1 seems to have way better battery life.

        • There M1 will have much better battery life and be more powerful. If you don’t mind the OS, the MacBook Air is a brilliant buy at that price.

        • Who's "their" ebay outlet? Got a link? Sorry, not overly familiar with MACs but expect the daughter to need one for school so figure I better get familiar.

    • Do you want Windows or macOS?

    • That would be a 13"
Surely much lighter and smaller. I'd much prefer it to lug around.

But if I'm working for hours at a desk, with no external monitor, than this 15" would be nicer.

Of course at a desk for hours you should be using an external monitor, KB & mouse.

  • +3

Just a heads‑up: ACT doesn’t offer a return facility for faulty machines. Although they did fix the issue I reported, I still had to ship the laptop back to them twice on my own expense, which added to the overall cost. Something to keep in mind when buying from them.

    • +1

That's why PayPal insurance was so good, they would refund 8 returns per year :-(

  • OP can I pick this up from East bne or murraie?

    • At checkout only showing p/u from Murrarie.

      • Thanks, bought :)

  • +1

Is it Win11 Pro or home?

    • +1

Should be Win11 Pro using a key baked into the firmware, if the one I got from the last deal is representative of the rest.

  • Good deal, thanks.
    Purchased one

  • Looking to get this for kids school laptop on the school requirement sheet they say to have 7 hour battery. Does one even exist at this price range? I'm not looking to pay for $1k+ laptop I know will get thrashed around in a school bag

    • -1

You can probably replace the battery if it doesn’t last that long. Also 7 hours? In what world is it actually going to be used for 7 hours straight. More likely needs 5.5 hours.

      • I don't know I asked Gemini and reason was an OH&S with 30 students charging would be a hazard so guess they just don't want all students charging and that was suggested too, to just buy replacement battery and or bring along a portable power bank. Does this laptop even do USB-C charging?

        • +2

Yeah, I got one in the last deal, and it came with a 90w USB C charger. No reason you couldn't use a power pack to charge it.

        • Thunderbolt = charging

      • +1

I looked at that 7-hours spec and chuckled. Ignore it.

    • +1

i have this laptop for work, i doubt it will last 7 hour if you use it for videos or web browsing. Only lpatops that might last that long is a Chromebook or snapdragon laptop.

    • +2

Biggest issue with this laptop is the screen size - 15" is a lot more cumbersome than 14" or the ideal 13" models, and smaller screens will have better battery life all other things being equal. For $300 though it's a pretty good risk.

    • -1

kids will definitely need a touch screen laptop

      • +1

        That's not so at all.

      • +1

The touchpad is a little tiny screen that you can touch, that always shows 1 colour.

    • I want to know how long is the battery lasts for this laptop too. Thinking of getting one for my years 7.

    • Someone above mentioned a MacBook Air refurb for $450. School happy with a Mac? Be much easier to lug around.

      • Where we getting refurbished MBA for that price?

    • The one i have has a battery life of around 4 to 5 hours. For a school laptop, i think it's a bit too big. If i really wanted to save money, it is possible to use this laptop for school and to simply tell your children to suck it up. It's not like it'll be the end of the world. It can be treated like crap and survive imo.

    • Just get a battery bank if need be. 7 hours on x86 processors is asking for quite a bit. Need something like 7640u with 60wh battery, which, as you might have gathered, are more on the 1k+ side.

  • @Calmago - Sorry for the silly question (I've never bought a refurb before).
Do these laptops come with a charger?
