    Price in title
    website says $148

  • Ahh the one important thing I missed 😂, Price!!!

  • +26

Note: Security updates ended in December 2025

    • how to find this info? where to?

    • 😬

    • -1

      Custom rom available?

      • I don't think that's how it works.

      • +2

You would probably lose NFC if that matters

      • +1

You think this phone is popular enough for people to GAF and develop custom ROMs for it?

  • +2

Looks to be a great phone with 8gb RAM. Cannot find anything cheaper or decent. Can live without 5G.

    • +3

I want this based on price but based on my last Chinese-branded phone (ZTE Axon) the "too good to be true" rule applies here for me. Setting yourself for headaches in a year.

      It's a no from me.

  • Dual sim?

  • +5

i think the nubia focus 5G still better value. it has 4GB ram but been using it as spare phone and not sluggish at all. also has a better processor than this.

      • +1

Yeah I'm happy with the nubia and for some reason I get better signal strength using a Felix sim than I get with my Motorola edge 20 fusion.

        • Just curious, does it have a hardware compass? It's not clear in the official specs.

    • +2

      Agreed.

The processor in this TLC is really old and (in my experience) the older Helio's are pretty slow.

MediaTek Helio G88 – an 8-core chipset that was announced on June 16, 2021, and is manufactured using a 12-nanometer process technology. It has 2 cores Cortex-A75 at 2000 MHz and 6 cores Cortex-A55 at 1800 MHz.

I avoid any phones with A75 cores even if they're budget ones. They just feel sluggish. You can't save a slow CPU with more RAM.

    • Is it network locked?

  • +4

    Cheaper than iphone pocket

  • +1

When the OP says "perfect for students" - are there specific features to lock down features?

    • +1

I think there is a protest app that lets you scroll for international concerns that don't involve Australia that you can choose and join in on

  • +1

What's the screen like to read on?
Might be handy as a small ereader/kindle

    • +1

That's the primary purpose of these products, but they're less comfortable for long-term use than actual ereaders; it's more of a trade-off between eye comfort and functionality. If I repurchase these, I'd better use them as an all-rounder rather than as additional reading material. I've refunded mine and got boox go 6.

      • That's the primary purpose of these products

Why? Why do you need an extra phone to read? Why isn't the primary purpose of this one… you know, phoning?

        • +1

Bcs that’s their sales point isn’t it? It has under performing chips with non-5G support. The display itself would be only reason to purchase it. Some people want ereader to read something cuz it’s it’s actully way more comfy especially if you’re in a field of science and research. However most of ereaders locked in their drm or reader softwares which is hideously non-functional for those who read a lot from web/publishers which tends to not supports many ereaders. That’s the sales point of these ones since many of these just support playstore which has way more functionality and display response. It’s not just about phoning, but it’s more about other purpose, as these are not a good phone, but rather a good reader.

  • +2

The ram is probably worth this much alone in today’s market

  • Does this support Android Auto?

  • What Android version?

    • +2

Released with Android 13. Up to 14. Old and weak processor. Not a good phone in 2026.

  • -5

No 5G support is a big blow in 2025. I'll pass.

    • +10

      2026

        Oops!

Telstra have zero F's about the 4G network. Couldn't call in or out the other week… phone was dead from 11am - 5:30pm (congestion).

With all the Optus stuff going on, I thought they would be concerned that calls/ text and data aren't working …. nup.

They just said to get a 5G phone, that isn't experiencing congestion in your area..

          • @tunzafun001: Sounds like a Telstra response, just give me your money, no fs about reality / service

  • Is it e-sim compatible?

    • +2

All phones are esim compatible. Just need aliexpress adapter

      • Alright then…how can I make my Motorola G51 5G e-sim compatible?

        Is it one generic adaptor?

        • +10

          https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005009478638653.html

Generic physical sim that you can download esim onto it.

          1. Inser the sim like any physical sim
          2. Download app called 9esim
          3. Use the app scan the carrier provided esim qr code
          4. It will wrote the esim onto this physical sim
          5. Now thisnohysical sim contains your esim that can be ejected and used like any sim.
          6. This sim can store upt to 15 esims.
          7. This sim is rewritable

@Jaduqimon: Jee, those people are pretty smart

          • @Jaduqimon: Off topic, but You seem to know what you're talking about….

I've been wanting to do a companion phone/weekend phone - smth like a z flip 3 as I still need some basic apps like WhatsApp and maps and spotify, but none of the other shit …. You think this is my best option?

            • +1

@Archer12: Get the nubia focus 5g.
              98bux

              • @Jaduqimon: Cheers will have a look, guess I still have to F around with Sim cards, might just move to physical Sim with my carrier and then get a 'feature' phone

          • @Jaduqimon: cheers for your description.

          • @Jaduqimon: Are there any cheaper ones?

            • @Alph4: I think the nubia is currently the cheapest decent spare phone. There are cheaper but they are complete rubbish

              • -1

@Jaduqimon: Sorry, wasn't clear enough! Cheaper e-sim adapters? $24 is a bit out of my budget.

                • @Alph4: Nah this one is the cheapest. Stack it with aliexpress discounts.

Remeber this esim adapter is transferrable so its kinda like a one off expense then any future phone u buy you can use it.

                  • @Jaduqimon: My PayPal records indicate I paid A$9 delivered last August. Can't remember what the deal with that was…

  • People whinge about how slow it is, but really, can you get anything better for the price?

  • There is already NXT60, when it will be available in AU?

  • Back in the early nineties, my cousin and I used to joke around, imagine if you could buy a mobile phone for $250. Little did we know back then that one day not only you can get one for less than $250, it can also do a lot of other things except make a coffee for you.

    • +1

You remember a conversation about a phone from 30+ years ago?

    • +1

Back in the 90s my cousin and I also joked around, imagine if you could buy 64GB of ram for less than a week's pay in the next 30 years.

      oh wait

      • Firstly, it depends on how much you get paid. And secondly the way 64GB of DDR4 or DDR5 RAM currently is in price i'd imagine that it would gobble up an entire weeks pay if not more depending on how much get get paid. Seriously i'm seeing prices of $800+ for 64GB DDR4 and DDR5 RAM. RAM unfortunately is not cheap any more.

  • This or boox palma

  • +1

    Shovelware handset

  • Is it good to use it as eink reader?

    • Nope as it isn't eink
      Eyestrain to the max 👀

  • Avoid 4G only phones for all costs, not worth for long term

    • +2

I've had 5G turned off for a long time, no difference really apart from saving power.

      • +1

Depend on where you live. My work phone is iphone 11 (4G only) but using Telstra business plan. The reception is very bad. If I put the sim card into other 5G phone, the reception improve like day and night.

        • Does it not occur to you that Telstra is to blame? I used Boost (Telstra) for ~5yrs bc that was the only thing that got reception where I was, then moved and it stopped working. Moved to OnePass (Optus), and never looked back. Never had a 5G phone.

          • +1

@wisdomtooth: Telstra is always to blame tbh
I had a standard phone sim and was using it as a hotspot, after a while it slowed to a crawl, turns out they throttle the phone plan if they suspect you are using it as a hotspot for too long… when querying they said to buy a data sim only and not to use my standard plan this way… Telstraaaaaa

          • @wisdomtooth: Hey, if you put that sim into a 5G phone, I am pretty sure that the reception will be improved. They mix the 4G and 5G like a leopard skin. If your phone has 4G only, your reception is very bad when you are at 5G location. That's why you need 5G phone for better reception.

I've been looking at buying the XTEINK X4 as a small (4.3") e-book reader, but this is not far off the price and can do more.
But I guess, the question is, do we want to do more or not…

Has anyone bought one to use as a Kindle alternative?

    • Wrong place to put this as this is a phone not an e reader.
I will buy that ereader now and let you know how it goes

      • my mistake, I thoguht this had an e-ink display

  • Is this compatible with Kogan with the emergency 000 thing. IMEI ban list?

    • Is not on the IMEI ban list. It has full VoLTE support on all Australian mobile networks so yes it's compatible with Kogan Mobile. That MVNO uses the Vodafone network. I infact use a TCL 50 Pro Nxtpaper 5G and i happen to be on Kogan Mobile and it shows the VoLTE icon at the top of the screen. The TCL 40 Nxtpaper model should be the same.

      • How is TCL next 50 vs 40?

        • Well the TCL Next 50 Pro is a 5G model and TCL Next 40 is 4G only but both support VoLTE Calling out if the box.
