            @Nom: Okay, thanks. I'm not a Fanboy but am genuinely curious about the other-side of the fence opinions:
            - The cloud storage thing I get. I have a multi-TB offsite backup I manage as well (It's like $3 dollars a month in electricity).
            - Productivity apps? I have tried things like Planner, PowerBI, PowerApps, Office, Teams. IMHO They all seem to be lacking core functionality that's available in Open-source software, and they seem focused on making you buy larger and larger licenses. What am I missing?
            - Are there people who actually 'want' Co-Pilot involved in every work thing they do? (not sarcasm). For me, even the AI in vs-code is more annoying than helpful.
            - Video editor with 4K export, okay, I get this! Maybe I've been using Shotcut for so long there are new features I don't know that I need?
            - All-day video calling and Copilot in Teams. I try to avoid getting locked into Teams, we just Discord, Zoom or WhatsApp :) is there a really good reason I should want Teams?
            - LinkedIn Premium Career. I understand why this may be important to some people, I use LinkedIn to find a date /jk.
            Seriously, I would actually love to know why people use MS products. (I am not being factious or disingenuous. I am honestly curious. And yes, I could ask Reddit, but we're here now :) any opinion welcomed.)

            @Nom: Everything you give it will be used for AI training and a subject to potential data leak and use against you.
            There are other good free cloud modern Office apps that don't enforce AI this much but do well all necessary stuff for free and more for little pay.

          One of the reasons could be habit. Most people get used to MS. Office since they're still children.

          It takes time and adaptation to learn and use other softwares not only LibreOffice. Previously for me long time ago, MS. Office fonts and page format looked different in LibreOffice.

          i actually had a file disappear in libre for no apparent reason and the only real input i got from the community support forum was i was stupid for not making a backup

          i've never needed to backup with msoffice or any other of the several word processors i've ever used (much as i probly should backup, i never have)

          If you want free Office software I much prefer the free open source ONLYOFFICE
          It has a way nicer UI than LibreOffice and has better rendering for Microsoft file formats too

    Just signed up. Mostly for the Linkedin premium, however, you first sign up to microsoft 365, then it says it'll send information within 7 days for linkedin premium. I was hoping to activate that one now.

    I also went in and stopped recurring billing after signing up.. so who knows whether i'll receive info on linkedin premium now.

      You don't have to change at all, it's your whatever account, just need to verify it like a secondary email. Account stays with your original email. So you should be fine.

            @eris: It depends on your use case and ecosystem but I use LibreOffice and various other free and open source software for desktop/offline publishing (inkscape, gimp, scribus, sublime*, blender), google drive/docs for online (not open source but free and more capable than M$).

            I believe using something like M$ office is both short term and long term pain - you become dependent on and stuck in a bad ecosystem instead of real learning while still having a learning curve specifc to their system (albeit small since the software is so limited) plus an economic cost that funds a bad corp.

              These two statements are utterly false - Google Docs has a tiny subsection of the functionality of Microsoft Office. It's most definitely not more capable.

              Yes it's got more than enough features for 99% of users, but let's not just spread blatant lies. Just as a simple example, there are many many many things that you can do in Excel, and not in Google Sheets.

                I'll start you off - G suite (free) supports more functional and modern app script throughout the platform whereas M$ only had deprecated and obscure VBA trash and insecure macros, though now you can pay more for Office Scripts as they tried to catch up 10 years late (still worse than G app scripts).

                  If you don't know what the differences are between the products, then why did you state the Google products were more capable ?

                  The three main things I switch to Excel for, are performance (big calcs in Excel are significantly faster on a decent computer vs the meagre resources that Google allocate to your sheet), Pivot Tables and large datasets.

                  I use Sheets more than I use Excel - but let's not pretend it's more capable.

                    @Nom: I do know the differences which enables me to conclude G sheets as suprior. Your response clearly demonstrates you don't understand the products:

                    G sheet does calculations on your local computer (generally) so you are dead wrong there.

                    Pivot tables are in Google sheets, dead wrong again.

                    G sheets have higher column/row max count, text length, but less max cells. If you are hitting that limit you are probably doing things wrong and should be using a db, but there are work arounds like multi sheet importrange.
                    Sheets has data connectors allowing you to connect to Looker or BQ, basically limitless computational capacity and speed, so you went three for three wrong.

                    I also suggested LibreOffice if you really need desktop app, which is free and nullifies those Excel arguments.

    For anyone using OneDrive, has it improved in recent years? For anyone that has used it and iCloud in recent years, were there notable differences in usability?

    I used to use OneDrive for cloud sync/backup, especially when I was mostly in MS ecosystem (yes, I used Windows phones, even after returning to a MacBook Air for daily driver). Unfortunately I had problems with sync/backup speed and data loss, even when my daily driver was a PC.

    I now have 2TB iCloud. I originally got it because of smart home/security benefits, and justified keeping it when they were no longer needed because each member of my family can get less storage on phones and laptops than would be otherwise needed. If I can save the $17 a month without too much of a dip in usability, I'd consider changing though.

      Update: they must have had system glitches as sent me the email again that verification worked. I just needed to select Australia as it defaulted to the USA and it now worked.

    I'm stuck in a "Sorry, something went wrong" loop after verifying my student email. Happening to a family member too.

    EDIT: Fixed it. Check your URL on checkout to see if it has requestedDuration=Month and change it to requestedDuration=Year instead. Stupid bug and stupid fix but it worked.

        It was like my original email. First letter of name, surname, @ unimelb.Edu.Au. . So, Jon Doe would be jdoe@unimelb.edu.au . You can get in touch with the uni for them to enable your alumni email, which would be jdoe@alumni.unimelb.edu.au, which is basically a redirect to whatever your personal email is

          Most of these services just work on a whitelist/blacklist of domains, I sign up for things by selecting a university at random and then providing a primary school email address and they accept it fine. Even unidays.

          Hey, did you get the instructions? Since my LinkedIn is on a different personal email which has nothing to do with Microsoft, but I have another personal Microsoft account. Wondering if the LinkedIn Premium is applied to that same personal email or any.

      Exactly what @noren7 says! Can confirm I successfully registered for the deal yesterday. First logged in to my personal Microsoft account associated with Windows, then followed the deal link and verified my Uni email from Utas (the form on their page will prompt you to).
