Framing RMIT Graduation Certificate

Hey all,

Just here with a little query / wanted to get wider opinion.

I recently graduated from RMIT and wanted to get my certificate frame.
I went to the RMIT Store to pick up the 'RMIT Testamur Frame', $70, beautiful.
Picked it up, took it open, opened to to see a blotchy RMIT logo… Wth, lets return it and get a proper one.
Called the store to then hear:
"This happens to all the remaining frames, what you have isn't the worst, all frames we have left (20) are like this.
We are getting new frames in ?? (Undisclosed time..) which will be $10 more, and we don't know the design."

So now I have a certificate frame I am going to return but wondering where I can get nice, high quality frame for RMIT's custom sized certificate size (280x430mm) from without doubling the price like RJ Framing

Am I even overreacting about the blotchiness, or should I just hold it out.

Thanks :)

Edit: I’m actually so angry… after mulling over it a bit, I called and asking to hear the whole story of why… Oxidation, which I knew, but also they didnt RAISE the price due to the known issue with this batch… They are the ‘Good guys’ for not raising the price.
Not letting people know, not saying ‘Sale due to xyz’… fuck all.

Fuck RMIT, 4 fucking years of a degree to be treated like a fucking idiot. I’m happy I pirated all my textbooks.
Rant over.

    I recently graduated from RMIT

    Congrats!

The custom size is a scam, you don't need to find one that is the exact size. Find one that is larger and then cut white (or whatever colour you want) board to fit the certificate.

e.g. this ikea frame is 40cm x 50cm @ $13.50. Then get A2 card from officeworks, something like this for $4 and cut out what you need to fit your certificate.

That is just the cheapest option, you can find plenty of other nice looking frames at kmart, bigw, target etc

    all 40cm x 50cm at ikea

Nobody but you will notice it while it hangs in your cubicle :/

It will be 20 years before you get your own office to hang it in :P

    • Home office, so will only be me… lol

      Not the point ! 😅

That looks terrible. It's not acceptable to me.

Go get it properly framed without the RMIT crap - no one will notice. $125 is reasonable. It's going to hang on your wall for your entire life. It's worth doing well.

Will balance it up and get my $ back from RMIT for this one, then will most likely sit on it for a bit and see what next frame is like, then go from there regarding custom vs RMIT.

Also just looked, $40 extra for some of the frames.

    (profanity) RMIT

    Yeah! FURMIT

I don't disagree with your rant about RMIT. I went there and it's a terrible university.

    • What was it ? The curriculum not clear?

      • +1

When you have PhD students with no teaching skills running the courses, yes.

        • Damn

        • The only degree in which our lecturers were teachers was BEducation.

          • @Muppet Detector: More accurately the lecturers were the staff and the tutors PhD students. It was a long time ago so maybe the requirements have changed.

            • @Clear: Hey! I was a tutor and not even graduated.
Normal practice to get next year students to be tutors. Best job ever. Paid extremely well

              • @IlIlIl IlI llIIIl: Exactly! At Griffith they even have a name for it PASS Peer Assisted Study Sessions.

Universities get people who know what they are talking about to make the necessary material available for their students.

Teachers, well they know how to teach. They don't know how to perform brain surgery.

By the time a student gets to university, it is usually expected that they know how to learn.

Hopefully, the university has appointed personnel who have all the information a student needs to pass their degree/area of study. It is up to the student to get the information they need out of their appointed instructors. It is not the job of the instructors to hold Mary's hand and skip with them under rainbows.

Am I even overreacting about the blotchiness

I wouldn't accept that for $70 ..or was $70 a discounted price to clear out the remaining stock?
The marketing photos should be updated on the website, or a notice added about the blotching.

    • Been $70 for the last 3 years if not longer, assume end of the run for this type of make.

Assume a lot of people just accept it at this point in time, haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere.

Dunno hey - maybe think of it as you had dropped tens of thousands of dollars into a course, $125 to frame up the piece of paper would be a drop in the ocean.
Especially if you plan to display it somewhere where your clients will see.

        • Mate don’t get me started…

If it was A3 or A4 or some standard, I mean sure I can go elsewhere..

But custom sized massive frame… ughhh.

Think I’ll take the below comment and just get it properly done.

Cheapest option, keep the frame and get a new mat cut to the same size. A decent framer should be able to match the colour of the existing mat.

    • +3

Cheapest option is just to leave the piece of paper in the tube in the bottom drawer of the kitchen.

      • See you would be correct, but the tube they gave us is A4, and the cert is the large dimensions I gave above

It's unconscionable that they are even selling these frames. Especially if this is one of the better remaining ones. Their remaining stock should be trashed, or sold at massive discount with the caveat they they are cosmetic rejects and only available as they have no other stock.

My nephew graduated a few years ago and the photographer was on site, as well as someone to frame the certificates.

They offered a special on 'duel degrees'. My father couldn't help himself and kept laughing everytime he looked at it

The chap came over and asked what he was pointing at… my father just pointed.

The fellow looked, puzzled, and then realised their mistake. And said they'd had the same banner for a few years and no one had every noticed.

also have a look at OP shops for frames. seriously.

even consider finding a frame that nearly fits the degree , and then just colour photocopying the degree with a reduction or increase in size so that the copy fits the frame.

who's going to know that the degree in the frame is a photocopy?

p.s. my degrees sit in a box in their tubes.

    • Lol same 🤣 in a tube but I was gonna buy one but seeing this post not anymore

    Not great, not terrible.

  • Congrats on graduation!

  • 11 x 17 inches converts to 27.94 x 43.18 centimetres if you're in a pinch. There's some well priced 11x17" frames on Amazon but there would be a 1-2mm overlap lengthwise, but that might not bother you.

edit: i'd suggest going a 12x18 inch frame that's matted to 11x17. Something like this https://amzn.asia/d/5YBgnZP

  • Thats really shit. Can't believe they are still trying to flog substandard goods.
Presume it isn't the uni selling it but a third party? Huge brand damage. I'd complain to the dean.

I used the cheapest possible plastic frame for my degrees from RMIT. Was more so for my parents when living at home still. Now it sits on the wall and no one cares about the paper anyway. Seriously don't spend the money. Publicly shame them in every way possible because sounds like you've given them a fair chance to make it right and they still refuse.

  • Imagine the poor saps who bought the original frames - they will have oxidized by now

  • A long shot, but is it possible there is a removable film covering the glass?
All the time, I see things where people have unknowingly left the factory film on products, making them look dull,

My degree is still sitting in the cardboard tube that it came in. Nobody is impressed by a 4-year degree any more.

  • Totally unacceptable for 70 dollars

Glad I didn't buy for my 13 year old degree
