Lycamobile has been with Vodafone since June 2024, which may be a turn off for some.

    • +2

Vodafone used to be unusable where I am (Regional NSW), but I might have to give it another try if they're using Optus towers as well nowadays.

    • key info. Vodafone. nuff said.

      • +6

        It's Vodafone + Optus.

However you should test drive the network (preferably with a disposable number, never port in to Lyca) for a month before committing to a year's worth of service.

  • +8

Do not do this if you use mms or expect that your international calls actually don't sound like a robot as they aren't true international calls - they use some shitty voip that does not work.

Ive been with them for 3 months and regretted every second coming from boost

    • How will you compare Boost with Lyca? I was with Lyca like 2 years back, it was okay at that time.

      • For my use cases being sending mms to group and calling my mum weekly it's been a PITA.

Network coverage in the city is actually better (Brisbane 4g+ on Boost, 5g on Lyca)

Is be happy to use Vodafone or a full feature set mnvo but not lyca

Not recommended at all. I purchased this plan for my 10-year-old son, and the SIM activation process was a nightmare. The document verification step repeatedly failed due to technical issues, and once the verification was finally completed, I was allocated a new mobile number instead of being able to retain the existing one.
Customer support was equally frustrating, it took at least 30 minutes on hold just to speak to someone. I also emailed their support team but never received a response.

    • Thanks for your feedback.

I was going to get one for my daughter for her first mobile plan.

I'll stick with More Telecom $12/month 14GB 4G SIM Only Plan (requires CommBank Yello Diamond)

      • I am CommBank Yellow Gold and offered $12 off, More current cheapest sim only is $28, so net cost would be $16, unless you get more discount?

        • Kogan Mobile (small plan) is currently $149 for 140GB

        • +1

          Diamond provides a better discount.

        • As above- Diamond, so $16 a month off.

    • +5

lyca porting in service is basically impossible.

      • +1

        shit company

      • You would think it would be all automated, wouldn't you?

      • I chose a future date for port in and got surprised it worked automatically early morning on the scheduled day.
It was a bit confusing because birth my current sim card and Lyca new number were eSIM. Can’t remember the process exactly but got msg notification then I immediately disabled the current card. After a reboot manually changed card number on Lyca eSIM to be my current number otherwise it displayed +61400000000.

        • Did this again for my wife last night. Ported in almost instantly. I guess the process of bringing in your number is critical.

Buy the eSIM > activate it > register a web account > port in using a separate page and form

The confusion comes in many steps, for example
          - you don’t get the opportunity to port in during checkout, and
          - upon activation you get a random new number.
          - you have to search and find the port in form
          - you have to have registered the new number before port in

The experience is far more than smooth.

    • +1

I bought the plan yesterday , everything worked ok for me . Even porting the number and activating esim done in 10 min .

  • +5

Seems cheap but not worth the headaches with this shit company.

  • +17

Good luck to anyone going with lyca.

They're the worst telco provider in Australia for good reasons.

Do some readings before committing 1 year with this mob.

    Fair warning.

    • -6

I would say Lebara is worst telco and both owned by Vodafone

      • Lyca does use the Vodafone network, but Vodafone does not own Lyca. They do own Lebara.

  • Shame they use the Vodafone network, may have been tempted otherwise. Getting a bit over Boost's ever increasing prices.

Edit: then again, after reading earlier posts…..

  • +4

Recently swapped over to Lyca. Biggest mistake I’ve made this year. Literally no support. You’ll be on hold for hours and emails are never replied to. Avoid like the plague. Cannot wait to be done with this mob.

  • +1

Even though they're on the Voda network, I've found their service to be horrendous. I switched over to Lyca after being a Voda prepaid customer for a year and there is a marked difference in service availability. Will happily switch away when my year is up.

  • Is this a esim ? Or can it be converted into a esim ?

  • CIS implies that calls to 13xx and 18xx numbers aren't free/included?

    • That is what I understood from it, but I can call 13xx & 18xx numbers. Actually in my area I get good signal and it is 5G unlike More Telecom. You also get WIFI calling. Only drawback is no mms to android phones, can send to iphone. I probably wait till my 12 months expire and then move out. Hopefully they don't give hard time when that time comes. PS: my port-in worked no issue, but I have to admit, their customer service does not exist.

  • +1

Good luck when activating the sim

  • Make sure you disable auto recharge and auto debit if you want to go with them. You can only do it after the activation process and not during.

    • I did not think there is option to do that as it renew every month, so I guess if you turn auto-renew / recharge, that might lead to cancel the remaining months? Not sure tho, as the plan is 12 renewal / month

      • Grateful if you could explain this auto-renewal feature (as distinct from the auto-recharge feature), because it is all a bit confusing. I got the $110 deal, and the port from Vodafone went smoothly and on time (although I got no confirmation that the port was complete – it just started working). As soon as everything started working, I disabled auto-renewal (auto-recharge was disabled by default) and deleted the card I had on file. Does the 12 renewals every 30 days work if auto-renewal is disabled (my gut says probably not), but if it is enabled (and that requires a card to be stored on file), is the card charged at every renewal?

        • I didn’t cancel the auto renewal yet just in case, may be after 11 month, my saved card also expired but as you already paid $110 in advance they don’t need to debit from your card any more, system says you auto renewed $9.2 every month.

          • @huntabargain: That’s good to know. Does your account show that $9.20 has been debited every month even though your card is expired?

The CES is poor;y written. In the data section, it says unused data rolls over when you recharge on the same or a higher-value plan, but elsewhere the plan itself is described as running for 12 x 30-day renewals. That uses the same term 'renewal' to describe two different things: an internal 30-day cycle and an actual recharge event. Because those are not distinguished, it is unclear whether a 'renewal' during the 12-month period is merely a rollover event or something that depends on auto-renewal being enabled. Perhaps someone in this forum knows.

            • @TheLittleGuy: If you go to payment history it says paid $9.16 on the monthly anniversary day when you joint. It does not debit from your card as you already paid for the whole year. I think they roll your unused data, it shows on the dashboard how much you have.

    • I did it yesterday , during the process , there is an option to enter payment details and also option to skip. I am postive i didnt enter my payment details while activating and porting the number.

Lyca Virgin touched for the very first time.

  • +5

There's a reason its called "Lyca" because its kind of like a network service provider.

  • +3

No customer service at all. Avoid at all cost. Even TIO can not help you.

    • Weird statement.

  • +1

What is the next best/cheapest mobile plan to use? Considering signing up to one of these when my plan runs out.

    • +2

I'm with EzySIM , happy so far.

    • +1

What is the next best/cheapest mobile plan to use?

You need to specify how much data you need for that question to be answered properly.

If you don't need any data, Amaysim has a $60/year plan. If you need a small amount of data, you can manually add data to that plan for $10 per gigabyte. If you need a little more data, there are other options like using an Eskimo eSIM for the data, at roughly $3/GB, but using that will make websites think you're in Singapore.

I'm using the above options, so my monthly spend is about $7, but I use very little mobile data.

  • +1

Wow. The comments really turned me off this deal… amaysim just upped their base plan. Looking to switch

    • Vodafone has $14 off for new customers lasts a full year. Anyone but Optus, quite frankly.

  • I'll advise against using Lyca. Bought a 1year plan and waited more than 2 weeks without sim delivery. Would've went out and got a sim myself if they stock it anywhere near me.
Anyway, long story short. Tried to contact support via phone, email and online chat without any response. Waited another 2 weeks and ended up having to dispute the charges.
They were quick to response right after that but it was too late as i opted for Onepass mobile which is more or less the same price after discounts.

  • +1

Friends don't let friends buy Lycamobile!

  • Was interested as a potential failover backup for when the NBN goes down.

Still stay clear? Any other suggestions?

Don’t need anything phone, just ok reception and enough data it won’t get immediately smashed if say there’s a software update or something - other than that, price and longevity.

  • +1

very horrible company, I lost a mobile number even though it still had about 6 months to expire. And after a long time to escalate to TIO, the company still can not get my number because it had been given to another person. Even a TV drama could not like that.

    • Would you mind explain what happen? did you cancel the renewal 6 month into your 1yr service?

    • Curious as to how this could have happened… it shouldn’t be possible, quite frankly.

  • Ok i actually had quite a decent experience with their customer service 😂 call was picked up under 15 minutes and they reset my esim thing. I disabled both the auto recharge and the other auto thing and didnt get further charged (i did use an empty debit card as a precaution)

Unfortunately, the 4g sucks otherwise i wouldnt have minded getting this.

    • I am on my ~ 3 months with them when I go to Manage Payment > Auto Recharge setting it is set to OFF but for Auto Renewal setting I had it ON (as it says Next renewal due on 22 Jan 26) So I afraid to turn it off then it might not renew and Cancel my service??

      • Yeah i just turned both off, did you want it to renew?

        • No I want to cancel after the 12 months period, can I turn both off now after 3-4 months?

  • Don't do it, please. TLTR; sim activate first, request number port after, support unreachable, sim expired a month later.

My Lyca sim activated fine but it was impossible to port my old number over. My carrier wasn't listed, couldn't contact live chat or call agent. All this whilst the 28 days were counting down to zero. Wasted the sim

  • +1

    don't buy Lycamobile!

  • +1

    Lyca does not support MMS.

  • +1

Stay away from Lyca , it’s a headache , no email or phone support .

  • I had ordered a monthly sim once and never got it. They are incredibly painful to deal with, would not recommend.

  • Is it that bad? $110 is probably the cheapest long expiry plan at the moment, with international call as a bonus.

Looking for a cheap mobile plan for my parents, dad needs international call, cheapest I can find other than this is Coles $189.

    • +1

Have a look at Lebara. They have a yearly plan for $159 with International calls.

  • bought before reading comments, activated esim, ported number successfully. There were few errors and confusing messages tho, I thought I'll get stuck with new number instead of ported one.

    • So all worked well for you at the end to your satisfaction?

  • I bought this same sim for $110 in their boxing day sale. It arrived last week so 2-3 weeks for delivery but they did mention when ordering they were closed over xmas/new year. I activated it today and it was fairly straight forward. It was done as a new number for a home alarm system I have. I tested it in the alarm and calls/messages were working well. I may not have bought it if I had have read all the negative experiences on ozbargain before buying.

  • Only ever heard bad things about Lyca, never good things.

  • +1

I am so wrong not listening to the negative comments. Now I am stuck at the porting phase, my current provider flexi is not on the website list. I must call to make things happen and the call wait time is 2hours +

    Hopppplesss

    • Just speaking from personal experience. You are better off disputing the charge to either get a response or move on to another provider.

I've tried phone, email, online chat without any response.

      • Can not agree more I am calling to request a refund. Searching for another provider now

    • Brooo what did I say up aboveeee. I've just accepted the loss, used the SIM in my Android head unit for internet… used the new new number for free stuff…. then just moved on.

  • +1

Tried support callback two days ago - still
    Waiting for the call!

  • Previous deal never tracked with TopCashback. Disabled auto-renew and triple checked. Still got charged $30 for autorenew. Won’t touch Lyca ever again!!

  • I just activated it yesterday. So far after a year they did manage to have a bit better systems (still alot based on their EU operations though). TLDR: Buy a E-Sim, activate it, port it over (doesnt matter if you carrỉer is not listed, they still be ported if it matchs the information anyways). No MMS but otherwise better than I expect

  • +1

Trying it out, port wont work with DL,

  • If I buy this Sim, when do I have to activate it? Is it similar to Onepass Mobile where you have 28 days to activate after purchase? Thx

    • Order summary says six months , just check for any cashback rules ,

  • Managed to activate using different ID, Topcashback didnt track,

  • Looks like they've extended the deal to 2nd March.

    • Yes its still active - should have waited as the data is 320GB now which is even better.

      • Do you mean the $110 plan? Yeah I remember I saw the data was increased some time but now it looks like they've reverted to 200GB, and still available as at 3 March.
