Check today, mine has just appeared out of the blue….and I check regularly!

      • +1

You are not wrong there, just checked, popped on mine as well.

  • Got the tech head. .. thought I could use at Bunnings… wrong!!

    Doesn't work at Element14 either.

    • +11

Best use for these is to get a Supermarket Slayer card, and then you can buy whatever gift cards Coles or Woolies has.

      • My Supermarket Slayer from December won't work on Android phones…

        • +2

Interesting…mine too. They are being 'douchey' about it as well.

Will be interesting doing a chargeback on a promo.

        • Interesting.. so it just can't be added? Or does it just not process when paying? I've got a refund on the way, which instead of Special reversing the transaction, they're giving it to me as a new card. Wonder how I'm supposed to spend it if I can't add it to Google Pay!

        • Does it mean you can't add Supermarket Slayer to the Wallet on Android phone?

          • @OZB99: Added ok but fails at the cashier

            • +2

@Fobsessive: *update. Mine was the same. My phone and the EFTPOS terminal buzzed and went crazy when it failed.

I complained, they said they cant see any failed transactions (even though I literally just had it fail at 4 locations and they were all listed). Said no worries, I'll just do a chargeback…

Last attempt while I was at the shop it failed at yesterday…Today it worked.

              • @tunzafun001: That's promising.. hopefully I won't run into any issues when I use it next.

Just to confirm, when it did fail, it never actually deducted any funds? And what shop was it?

              • @tunzafun001: I recall something similar at the last deal - also an Android Google Wallet user - payment terminal at the supermarket gave some kind of 'card not supported' error, multiple attempts on different days. Removing and re-adding the card to Google Wallet worked, no trouble after that

        • +1

I just used mine this morning at woolies, tapped my Android phone to pay without any issues.

      • So you can definitely use these to pay for gift cards? Thought this was blocked due to money laundering issues, or is there a workaround like pay alongside regular groceries or something?

        • +7

Special gift cards are prepaid Mastercard gift cards that work at a limited number of merchant category codes (MCCs), so it will be handled by a merchant as a Mastercard.

Checkouts at Coles, Woolworths and ALDI (as examples) currently allow them to purchase gift cards. However, if a staff member sees you trying to use a prepaid gift card to purchase a gift card, they may stop you.

On the other hand, gift cards issued by Coles, Woolworths or ALDI themselves (e.g. Coles gift card, Coles Group & Myer gift card, Woolworths Supermarket gift card, Everyday WISH gift card, ALDI gift card) cannot be used to purchase gift cards. This is a restriction enforced by their checkouts (and I suspect this is what you had in mind when you saw "gift cards" being mentioned).

          • +1

            @WookieMonster: Understood. Much appreciated, thanks.

          • @WookieMonster: What would be the most convenient and secured Visa/Master prepaid cards to buy with Supermarket Slayer, which could be used to pay council, utilities, etc.?

            Thanks!

            • @ja912son: Does your Council accept PostBillPay ?

              • @whyisave: Yep, been always paying their using PostBillPay.

            • +3

@ja912son: I cannot provide you a single answer, is it depends on the supermarkets near you, your definition of "convenient" and the payment options your council provides to you.

In terms of available prepaid gift cards (and based on your apparent location):

              Mastercard

Supermarket Gift Card Denominations + Fees
              Coles Coles Mastercard gift card $50 + $5 fee, $100 + $5 fee, $250 + $7 fee
              Woolworths Vanilla Mastercard gift card $50 + $5.95 fee, $100 + $5.95 fee, $25-$500 + $7.95 fee
              ALDI N/A N/A
Ritchies IGA (apparently only some locations) Karta Mastercard gift card $50 + $5.95 fee, $100 + $5.95 fee

              Visa

Supermarket Gift Card Denominations + Fees
              Coles (Vanilla) Visa gift card $25 + $3.95 fee, $50 + $4.95 fee, $100 + $5.95 fee, $250 + $7.50 fee, $400 + $9.95 fee
              Woolworths (Vanilla) Visa gift card $50 + $5.95 fee, $100 + $5.95 fee, $25-$500 + $7.95 fee
              ALDI Activ Visa gift card $50 + $5.95 fee, $100 + $5.95 fee, $200 + $7.95 fee, $20-$500 + $7.95 fee
Ritchies IGA (apparently only some locations) True Rewards Visa gift card $50 + $5.95 fee

In terms of convenient, it depends on the merchant and the accepted payment methods. For example:

              • If you are paying online, you would be better off getting a prepaid Mastercard gift card, as an online merchant would be more likely to accept a prepaid Mastercard gift card online than a prepaid Visa gift card.1

              • If you are wanting to pay a large amount in one transaction (and the merchant does not allow split payments), you would need a larger denomination gift card, which would mean a Vanilla Visa/Mastercard gift card from Woolworths would work best.2

              • If you are paying in-person and the merchant does not accept swipe transactions, the only gift cards mentioned above that do not rely on swipe transactions are Karta Mastercard gift cards, Activ Visa gift cards and True Rewards Visa gift cards.

              • If you are paying in-person at Australia Post, it would depend if the council in question accepts Visa / Mastercard payments through Post Billpay. For example, City of Melbourne does not accept Visa / Mastercard payments through Post Billpay, which means your only payment options would be cash, cheque or eftpos (SAV/CHQ).

In terms of secure, that is basically impossible, as all prepaid gift cards are susceptible to fraudulent transactions (and sometimes also tampering). For example:

              • There are multiple reports on here of Coles/Vanilla Mastercard gift cards and (Vanilla) Visa gift cards being tampered (e.g. part of the gift card number and the entire CVN have been scratched off the physical gift card before it was sold to you), meaning you cannot redeem the gift card itself.

              • There are multiple reports on here of fraudulent transactions on Coles/Vanilla Mastercard gift cards and (Vanilla) Visa gift cards (and to a lesser extent, Activ Visa gift cards). You can dispute transactions on these gift cards (and lodge a complaint with AFCA if things take too long), but a transaction dispute is not a fast process. Someone last week attempted a fraudulent transaction in Illinois on one of my Coles Mastercard gift cards with 2029 expiry, but luckily the amount they tried to charge was a lot more than the available balance…

              • I have not heard about fraudulent transactions on Karta Mastercard gift cards and True Rewards Visa gift cards; Karta Mastercard gift cards have no card details printed on them (other than the card expiry and PIN), and True Rewards Visa gift cards should have the gift card redemption details printed on the purchase receipt. However, those gift cards do not allow you to dispute a transaction (and there is no way to lodge a complaint with AFCA), so if you had a fraudulent transaction on one of those gift cards, tough luck! A staff member could also reprint the purchase receipt and claim the True Rewards Visa gift card before you, but you would have to be extremely unlucky if that happened to you.

              1. I explain the reason for this in dot point 1 in this comment.

              2. Although ALDI sells Activ Visa gift cards in a $20-$500 variable load denomination, ALDI will apply a 0.5% surcharge to any payments from a Supermarket Slayer gift card, as that gift card only operates on the Mastercard network (and ALDI surcharges all payments routed the Mastercard - and Visa - networks). Additionally, the only type of split payments allowed at ALDI when purchasing a gift card is cash + one payment card, so if (for example) you have a $200 Supermarket Slayer gift card and want to purchase a $500 Activ Visa gift card, you would need to pay $308.95 in cash first, then charge the remaining $199 (+ $0.99 surcharge) to your Supermarket Slayer gift card.

@WookieMonster: Amazing reply,, because I have a Council bill to take care of but I will need to read again properly later, because I'm sleepy now 🥱 ,

              • @WookieMonster: can I buy Coles GC using Coles Mastercard GC?

                • @dealsgrabber: It depends on who is selling the Coles gift card.

In most cases, it will work, but there are a handful of gift card portals that will not accept Coles Mastercard gift cards as a payment method (e.g. Bupa Life Rewards).

                  • @WookieMonster: Apologies, my question for was in store payment at Coles, not online

                    • @dealsgrabber: That should still work.

Keep in mind Coles blocked this for a while, so I have no idea if they will block it again in the future.

    • +3

You can try using it at office works and buying a Coles gift card with it and using it for groceries.

    • Why not DIY Legend card?

      • Maybe ..just an Ozbargain post on here said the Techead worked at Bunnings… And it didn't.

I really want to use it at Element14 on "tech"…no dice.

Aussie Explorer, for use at 7-11 fuel stations.

  • Got it on Discovery but not the OG Escape. Last time round I had it on Escape but not Discovery.

  • +4

Purchased the supermarket gift card and then used it buy liquor at coles using the save20 code. Bargainnnn

    • The feel good feeling when stacking offers!

    • so are you saying you were able to use the special supermarket slayer as a payment method for coles online?

  • I've gotten this 3 times but not this time on my explorer :(

    • Same here

  • +1

Had it every time until the last two offers…

  • +1

I've never not been targeted for this, I am shattered this time around.

  • Got it on Velocity Platinum

  • Got it on my explorer, thanks OP!

  • -1

so lame we can't transfer into amazon credit, why are they constantly blocking the will of the people?

  • Got it on my Qantas Discovery. Cheers, OP!

  • Can this be used on Amazon either to buy products or buy gift cards?

    • +1

      products yes gift cards no

      • can these be used on amazon at all? which category?

  • Not on my primary or secondary cardholders.
    No targeting here.
    Maybe next time.

  • +2

wow first time i didn't get one of these "special" offers in my amex (qantas discovery card)

    • have you checked recently? just appeared on mine when I checked

      • the latest deal it has come up now

  • +2

    So just to confirm:
    1. I activate the offer in Amex
    2. I then go to special.gift and purchase a $200 gift card (to get the maximum $20 rebate @ 10%), by 15Mar26
    3. Amex credits my Amex account $20 within 15 business days

That's it? there is no check or requirement to use the gift card by a set date - right?

    • Yep! Ive recieved the cash back before spending the entire balance before

    • Yep, in my experience you get an email from Amex confirming the purchase pretty quickly, and the cashback comes through within a couple of days and shows up on your card transactions.

  • How long does it take to arrvie? Bought it 3 hours still haven't received anything 🙃

    • +1

usually within minutes, never had to wait hours

    • +1

It took about a week to get the cashback with the previous offer

    • When i changed from email to sms, i received it immediately

    • Amex also usually send out an email confirming the purchase before the cashback arrives.

    • Hi, I assume you got it in the end. How long did it take? Usually I get it within minutes as one comment mentions. This is the first time it hasn’t happened like that. It’s been 3.5hrs now.

Edit: just saw your comment about changing to SMS. How do you do that after it’s bought?

      • +1

I remember there was an option on the speical gift card website (I have registered already) to change it between sms and email. Hope it helps

      • Having the same issue on mine where it isn't immediately delivered.

Have you got yours now and if you managed to change it to SMS? Couldn't find a way to do that

        • +1

Hi, I’ve got it now. Actually sent email to support. They replied first time saying they’ve sent it again. An hour later they sent another email asking for mobile. Replied back (after seeing both emails) saying I still don’t have email and gave mobile. In the meantime I have checked here and seen @Codeless comment. I logged into the website with Safari on my iPad and I could see an edit option next to my order. You can resend from there to a mobile. You won’t see this option in the app. Hope that helps!

          • +1

@thriftee: Thanks for the tip! Managed to get it right away with the SMS change through a web browser

  • Good this on the amex platinum

  • got on platinum reserve card not the main platinum

  • Which cards are for Coles or Woolworths? Didn't see their specific cards on Special Gift Cards website.

  • +1

SOS: Has anyone encountered this: when I am adding the received special card to apple pay, there is a step that requires "verification" for the first time (as have never encountered this requirement before). However when I logged in the special gift card website, I can't find where to verify the card received?

    Any tips? Thanks

    • Same problem. Only way I can get around this is adding it manually to my spare android phone. My iphone has had issues over the past 16 months where at certain times I’ve been unable to add various Visa and Mastercard gift cards.

    • Same problem here

    • same problem before, I sent an email to them and they refunded the gift card. So end up I still get the offer rebate.

    • I had the same issue. Contacted Special GC and they refunded the amount. Amex then reversed the cashback twice instead of once (but that’s another story in itself).

Amex customer service said I can buy again and get the cashback but I’m not sure if I want to test that.

  • +11

This was added to a few other Amex card types in the past 48 hours, so check again to see if you're targeted!

    • +1

Thank you for letting us know! Now got it :)

    • I had it on main account when first posted/released- supplementary card still not targeted.

    • same!

    • Came to say the same thing 😀

  • This just appeared in my Offers today.

  • Thanks. I just purchased supermarket slayer. So I can go in store and buy an Amazon gc with this gc? (Android)

    • +1

Worked for me at Woolies this morning buying TCN Kids card.

Just needed to manually enter Supermarket Slayer into Google Wallet as auto load from Special wouldn't register the card.

    • +2

      You can if:

      • The supermarket lets you do that. Special gift cards are prepaid Mastercard gift cards that can be loaded onto Apple Pay and Google Wallet, so you redeem them the same way as you would redeem a regular Mastercard. The checkouts at Coles, Woolworths and ALDI (as examples) should let you use a Special gift card to pay for a gift card, but if a staff member notices what you are trying to do, they may stop you.

      • The supermarket you go to sells Amazon gift cards. Physical Amazon gift cards were withdrawn from sale from brick and mortar retailers (e.g. Coles, ALDI, BIG W, Shell Reddy Express, Ampol Foodary) in late 2025, so I would be extremely surprised if a supermarket still sold them today.

  • I had problems and got 'payment declined' when trying to complete the order on specials website. Would enter card details and go through the authorisation sms code but would end up declined on special's side.

Looked through a bunch of posts and comments and some suggested, incognito, new account, new names or new IP.

I tried incognito on the laptop but that didn't work. In the end went to the length of making a hotspot on my phone, and then creating a new account (on a new email address) & in incognito mode for them to process my payment.

    • +1

yea PITA, I've had issues with these guys constantly declining (even after Amex SMS verification).

  • Thanks @Mods for highlighting this deal. Yes, I've got it now. Wasn't there a couple of days ago.
