So, you're telling me I could buy 32 of these and score myself 256gb DDR5 for less than $8.5k? Then in 3 months time I could trade my stockpile of RAM for something like the whole of Greenland? Or would I be better off using $8.5k as a deposit on an 80k BMW for higher investment yield?

    • +2

Trump entered the chat, did someone say Greenland?

      • +2

        plata o plomo

      • Norway is here

        • Denmark maybe ?

      • +1

This sounds like the very best deal for Greenland.
        Maybe the best for Greenland.
Some people say this is the best deal for Greenland since the Vikings arrived and traded beads. Lovely beads, they were glass beads..

if you could pop linux on it it would make an ok thin client

i mean that's about it really

    • +2

ChromeOS is Linux, and it is a "web client", the modern version of a thin client. (So are most laptops, most of the time?)

These things have OK single thread benchmark, but only 2 core.
It runs proper Chrome, much better than on Android/IOS versions, and as close to zero-maintenance as anything. Aimed solidly at the school market.

Maybe good for a janky home NAS setup through SMB or immich?

  • Who are buying these, schools that are Google apps shops ? Not this sort of things i’d load local apps on and would expect to be productive. Is this a supplement for people who are mainly phone users and are cloud based app users ?

    • +3

Yeah the target audience is mainly students at Google/ChromeOS based schools
(I actually found out about this model while trying to buy the older model which was priced the same at Officeworks, props to the customer service for letting me know)

  • has anyone used chromebook before? can it install android apps?
2 cores 2 Threads will it be slow? i mean my co issued 4cores 8 threads win11 laptop isn't too snappy

    • +2

Yes, you can install Android apps.

This is a lower end Chromebook mainly for students to type essays with/browse the web and for light office work

    • +2

This would not be recommended if you want to run Android apps. No touchscreen, and Intel CPU.

  • Curious on any feedback.
I just got the i3 model from JB for 394.
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/asus-cx14-14-full-hd-chro…
Same price as Black Friday and $50 cheaper than Boxing Day.

Jb/officeworks have the same $259 price go the n4500 at the moment, but I can’t see if it’s ddr5.

    • The n4500 only comes with ddr4.

For my use-case, I could not justify the extra $140.

  • office works ad says can install office 365, must be web version , or it’s chrome plugins ? didn’t mention if it’s ips or tft screen, ? I can see the appeal for schools, no need to worry about patching or dog eating homework as it’s cloud apps from google.

      Android mobile versions/ web app

This keyboard, letters are barely visible. Is there some backlight?

    • Doubt it if nor mentioned. Dealbraker for me.

  • Can you cast TO the chromebook?

  • Just received mine.

Very happy with it. Quite snappy.
The screen is much better than I thought it was going to be. Nice matte display.
Already playing some of my Android games on it.

    • Not hoping for miracles but how is the speaker sound quality?

      • +1

        Like a cheap bluetooth speaker.
