What's The Verdict on The New Sydney Fish Market

Has anyone been to the new Sydney Fish Market?

For eating and dining there, it appears to be Sydney Fish "Market" now charging restaurant prices

Direct from the source, but with the direct markups

Usually when there's a paid endorsement or special invite involving Adrian from Place of Sydney @AdrianWidjy, you know the place is trying to milk you

Parking is also non-existent?

    Tastes like chicken

  • @Wiadro here you go

    • +3

      Here’s your answer

      End of thread

      • Needs an eastern suburbs perspective

        • They just goto Watsons Bay Hotel, Doyles on the Beach, or Fish & Chippery.
They aren’t going west for food.

People whinging about those prices for the Po'boys (~$31AUD), well - I was in New Orleans in November and the Po'boys from the revered locations were around the $25AUD mark.

    • +1

and the Po'boys from the revered locations were around the $25AUD mark.

Just all the tourist trap locations, no?

      • Define trap, the Po'boy I had was effing scrumptious

      • +2

Inflation is absolutely rampant in the US. I was in New Orleans pre-Covid and could get po boys for less than $10 not that far from Bourbon St. Less than $5 in Baton Rouge.

    • Po'boys

How much "fish" do they have inside? Away from all the other many and various extras to make it scrumptious.

To justify going to and ordering in the "Fish Market".

Isn't it the case that if the service/experience is good, then OP will happily pay for it?

If OP is saying the quality doesn't match the price, then so be it. But it appears it's a concern for the price where OP will happily pay extra for (their version of) good services elsewhere.

Frowning on penny pinchers and then objecting to a price increase seems a bit hypocritical.

    • +1

Yes I'll happily pay reasonably or more or tip for services that cant be matched particularly in industries or industries I work closely with and need to build that business relationship with (investing, planning, building and development).

Especially with many dodgy operators around. Recently a friend got scammed out of 100k before they realized and stopped ad-hoc payments, they had to cancel flights to deal with the issue cause they tried to cut corners and another was involved in a 1 year delay for what should have taken 1 month, also cutting corners. Chinese operators scamming Chinese people.

Food and dining out can be easily matched. Apparently you will be paying for sit down restaurant prices in a fish market, direct from the source. Festival price gouging at its finest without the actual restriction of supply.

  • +36

I have an extra $15k as I didn't tip my REA, so no issues paying for me.

    • Ooh… Burn…. :)

    • i also saved $15k

    • That makes cents.

This is going to age just as well as the investment with high yield post. Can't wait to continue seeing this come up in the forums.

    • legend, thanks

    • +2

Expensive and not much of it.

    • +1

You'd hope emergency vehicles wouldn't be charged for parking …

      • I don’t think they would care about the boom gate tbh.

      • +1

        It is Sydney though…

    • Looks like airport parking.

      • Flying fish perhaps?

    • Since its school holidays you can park on the grassy area next door for $10 flat rate

  • +16

Based on my experience with farmer's markets, if you cut out the middleman it just makes things more expensive

      1. Higher operating costs due to the build/premium rent?
      2. Shift from traditional market into 'world class precinct' with high cost fitouts therefore justifying high prices?
      3. Retailers now operating like restaurants?
      4. Higher cost in maintaining higher standards?
      5. Tourist pricing?

I think it's all the above.

I'm hoping to see the retailers compete against each other to bring down the cost once foot traffic settles.

Proper deals and bargains can most likely obtained from negotiating direct with the boats or whole sellers who buy from the dutch auction.

I asked ChatGPT to analyze your forum posts and this is what it’s come to the conclusion of.

    Bottom line:
The motive isn’t confusion or ignorance — it’s engagement farming through mild provocation, dressed up as “discussion.” Not trolling exactly, but not sincere inquiry either.

    Goes to fish market
    Orders pork

Isn't this the same crowd as the new Paddy's market food hall? Tourist trap pricing.

    • Not that I am aware of as held by different ownership (but could be same crowd funders / private equity).

Not surprised Luke Nguyen who has multiple stores in Paddy's market also opened up a store in Sydney Fish Market. His businesses run an incredibly tight and efficient schedule to reheating frozen soups in plastic packets for Pho. Artist at disguising trash as quality to get highest premium price point.

Best fish and chips in Sydney is in rose bay. Coogee fips and chish close 2nd

    • 'Fish at the Bay' ?

      • Yep

  • no poll on this? so far its bigger but it doesnt feel spacious with how they spaced out the shops, its just closely located next to each other. fish prices have remained the same (~$50 spend pp) but expect the prices to start going up from now. for some, its not faster to get off at glebe light rail station.

god knows why you would go to the fish market for a po' boy or a $30 banh mi there.

    • god knows why you would go to the fish market for a po' boy or a $30 banh mi there.

So that you can post a 15 second video clip on the Tik Tok or a highly filtered photo on the Instagram while you're showing as much cleavage as possible and you're doing the old duck lips but the duck lips are actually semi-permanent because you paid a 'doctor' to inject some Selleys under the skin so you can look like every other augmented plain Jane and so that you can show off how "cultured" you are by calling the overpriced breadroll you're posing with a "barn me".

    • -1

No poll as it can be quite open ended on people's verdict, I can safely assume it's not a positive one except for you know what that can be used

Though cleavage and duck lips sell well on social media and other platforms.

  • Do you get attacked by Seagulls still?

as I saw - a guy saying $300 for crab I can get for $20 in Adelaide ?

    • +1

That's a hyperbole but I get the gist of it.

I been to the old one and yeah it was pretty pricey. The new one, one ups it.

      https://content.api.news/v3/images/bin/31b6cf8252720ded65429…

Still, you'll be a fool to purchase prawns or oysters at the bar or restaurant. Go buy them from the fish mongers directly. It will be half the price.

I can get freshly shucked (in front of me) at South Melbourne Market for about $2 each. They have a table lined up where you can get free condiments

      • I can get freshly shucked

        Aww shucks.

      • I can get freshly shucked

        Does it hurt?

And is it a one time thing, or is there an opportunity for repeat business?

Long weekend is coming up, it seems quite a few have visited during the weekday. More verdicts incoming up

    • -1

      more suckers incoming.

  • Well its smells quite fishy..

  • Can only afford to go if you tip.

  • +1

    It looks like a PS5

  • +1

I'm sure it's doing 'great' things for the parking occupancy up at Broadway shops - drove past there on Thursday… should we stop? take a gander? … looked at hordes of people walking down on a weekday. Nope, kept going.

  • +2

I went, earlier in the week.
The design, layout, architecture is nice.
The place was quite packed, for a weekday and 10:00 in the morning too!
I think it was mostly tourists, and there were lots of Chinese-background people there, as visitors and happily enjoying platters … at 10:00 in the morning.

There were still shops, doing the move, as some stock was still at the old building (eg. I spoke to FruitEzy), but most retailers were in full swing and enjoying their new premises (eg. I saw a Mediterranean shopkeeper scold her younger Indo-Chinese (?) staff "What is this rubbish?!! Put it in the bin. We are no longer at the old Fish Market anymore!! <with condescending face + tone>")

There were lots of people taking photos of the live crabs ($259 per kg!), live lobsters, oysters shucked, big Sashimi-quality Tuna heads on display (probably weighs 30kg from the size of the head alone!), etc.

I saw big hall, with tiered, Cinema-hall, amphitheatre seating, where fishmongers or retailers can bid in Auction for fish or catch-of-the-day via digital tablets.

I could see the lower halls/floors are where the fish is sorted, distributed, descaled, etc.

Still, everything felt pricey to me and although I have watched food-bloggers overzealously froth over $40+ lobster ramen, or enthuse over oysters and crab claws,…it is not my kind of place, to want to splurge.

It will attract more affluent Sydney-siders and tourists, because it is a nice building, taking in the nice views of the small bay there, Glebe and Pyrmont, and somewhere just to want to hang out, but with almost no free parking around, it is going to be interesting to see how much actual patronage will want to get there via the light-rail.

I reckon, in 5 years' time, after the apartments and further development along the shoreline, plus the new Pyrmont metro station, it will feel to be a more vibrant and buzzing place, rivalling Darling Harbour and Cockle Bay wharf, in their hey-days.

I would prefer eating at Cabramatta or Eastwood or Campsie, because that is probably my 'scene' than a fancy place like this new fish-markets.
I did not quite visit the old one (maybe 2x in 10 years) and not as motivated to return to this new one either, unless I need to bring a tourist-visitor there.

    • +1

Jesus such a detailed review and verdict that you would expect from an audiophile 😆

Good to see at least they are upping their hygiene standards. I'd rather pay slightly more especially for seafood for this, but the price increase just for the rent, land, no middle man, being a tourist trap or whatever reason is off putting.

Retiring and loaded boomers who made fortune off property and other investments + Asians will probably be frequent visitors is my guess.

Also heard they were giving lots of free stuff during the day time on grand opening day (not night time though)

I'd visit the old one maybe once a month but it just seemed so unhygienic dirty and run down. IMO the only good restaurant there was the boatshed which was slightly already over priced. But the stalls that shucked and served fresh oysters + fish mongers were only things of good value.. hoping to see more variety at the new one when I do go visit

      • +1

        from an audiophile 😆

I still was / is / am , but less interested nowadays, as I have tasted "end-game" for my ageing ears.

Also heard they were giving lots of free stuff during the day time on grand opening day

I was going to go in the daytime, on Grand Opening Day, but decided not to, because of "crowds".

I should have gone then, just for the free stuff.

the old one maybe once a month but it just seemed so unhygienic dirty and run down

In spite of the hype around the "Sydney Fish Markets", I went to the old one, a few times,…probably about 3-4 times, in more than 30 years.
The old one did not seem to be an impressive place, and I always wondered why people liked to rave on about it.

I have been to plenty of fish markets in Asia, and the Sydney one, felt kind of tame and without the 'authencity' of a fish market, ie. wet floors, big Chinese cleavers on wooden blocks, fish guts everywhere, etc.

        • +1

I got grilled salmon + chips for $21.5 from one of the store there.

According to Gemini AI, the range price for grilled salmon + chips in Sydney is between $21 to $34. The cheapest is $21 in Hornsby. So, I think the price that I paid is good with waterfront and bridge view …

          • +1

@neoleo: With food, we cannot just focus on price, because even Gemini cannot answer for you:

Did your Salmon + Chips taste good ?

            (Was it "fresh"?)

Did you enjoy the meal ? 😌

  • -1

Is it all retail or are there still wholesale options and morning auction action for industry?

Is it meant to only cater retail and tourist, or is this now the only place commercial businesses can now source their seafood products in Sydney?

Is it in direct competition to Fisherman's Wharf?

    Who supplies these markets?

  • -1

Saw a video of some of the prices. Looked super expensive and a bit of a tourist trap. I guess the nice look now comes with a premium food price.

  • I bought 2 small blocks of Australian fatty tuna (toro) cost around $35-ish to share around with 3 other people. OMG, what a melt-in-your-mouth-buttery taste. Totally worth it than all the highly processed deep-fried food selling there.

  • I went to the Sydney Fish Market last weekend.

TLDR: Very brutalist form, design and feel of a fish market, prices for food and parking are similar as previously in year before they closed. Prefer the old one better but more parking spaces and cleaner site

The prices were very similar to before (noting there was price hikes last year), but with more ready to eat food options now without the need to crowd into those buying fresh fish, so not sure why people were shocked (on site parking, hot and cold ready to eat food).

    Definitely more spacious.

But as @whyisave mentioned before. It's become stale, devoid and lost its 'bustling fish market vibe'.

The outdoor seating they provided was too minimalist, brutalist and stale, no character of a fish market that was once there. A bit like the steps and outside area of the brutalist opera house, minus the grand and famous views..
