Free Limited Access to Nearmap Satellite Imagery @ View.com.au

3790

This is a bit of a niche deal however maybe of interest. I noticed that you can access free high res near map satellite imagery when accessing a listing on view.com.au. The satellite imagery via nearmap is generally higher res and more upto date compared to google maps/sixmaps.

This is limited though as the satellite imagery is limited to about a square KM around the property. You need to find a property listing near your area of interest. The satellite imagery can be accessed by looking up a listing, scrolling down the page, clicking on the map under location eg. https://view.com.au/property/nsw/marrickville-2204/22-29-35-…

Update: it's possible to view more than the 1km limit by using the map on the right hand side of the suburb search page.

    This is great! Thanks

Ha, really surprised they're not fencing it…

  • Thanks OP - this is great!

  • Great find.

  • Grea freebie! Thanks OP.

  • Cool

  • OP Thanks

What are people using this for?

    • +16

One example is if you were quoting a job for a sewer treatment plant, and the tender mentions the multiple sewer tanks, inlets to waterways/outlets etc. before you get to go to site physically, you’re able to get a good idea of the layout/location/access restrictions etc. to help you better understand the job requirements etc.

    • +14

Solar panel installation, illegal building works, pool inspection, progress of building, tree coverage analysis, traffic survey, etc.

        • +25

          You asked for examples right?

            • +15

@tenpercent: Then be specific about the examples you want next time instead of saying what would people use this for and expecting 90% of the population to use it exactly like you.

              • +23

@nightelves: to be fair their username is 10%

                • +5

@tenpercent: Funny thing is no map needed to see all the crap coming out of your mouth, you have done a great job of that here..

You asked for examples, you got examples now go annoy someone that deserves it

                  • -5

@DannyBoy: I actually said "what are people using this for".
In that sentence, "this" referred to this deal, not aerial or satellite imagery in general.

And no, your local council revenue raiser is not using the maps on random property listing pages at view.com.au in order to get a sneaky peek at aerial images of nearby properties in the hopes of spotting an "illegal" pool or footpath.

That's not an example at all. That's just a figment of nightelves' (and presumably your own) sad imagination.

OR they didn't actually mean that the council was using it to look for "illegal building works" but instead meant that some private individual not at the local council has been behaving like a sad sack dibber dobber and being a nuisance for their neighbours. In which case I will concede it is indeed an example, albeit rather left field.

                    • +1

                      @tenpercent: Dude - move on.

Weird. You've used the word "council" seven times and nobody else has mentioned it. Have you become confused and begun arguing with yourself?

                      • -2

@us3rnam3tak3n: Weird. Who else do you think is using satellite or aerial imagery to look for illegal building works in the Australian suburbs?

Weird that you counted how many times I used the word "council too.

                        • +1

@tenpercent: Ctrl-F does the counting. Alt-F4 would suit you better though.

finding something I can dob in my neighbours for to the local council

                              Apparently, you.

Jokes aside though, you asked for examples and were given seven. Then you got hung up on one particular usage. My use case was to check canopy over different properties to help determine suitability for solar installations. I use Pylon but this might actually be useful for a quick first pass.

                                Lol no.

My use case was to check canopy over different properties to help determine suitability for solar installations.

That sounds like a real example. Thanks for sharing it.
Does that mean checking for structures and trees that could shade a proposed installation?

                                • +1

@tenpercent: Pretty much. Aerial imagery was more recent than satellite, plus had month and year data so you could see how sun position and foliage changed seasonally.

      • Better websites (free trial) for solar. Actually can select panels and performance

    • I got a quote from company for my roof painting without them visiting and checking it in person - and I wss wondering how they could be so sure. Such hi res images would be way they do it.

  • +1

It works, but houses near my place rarely go on the market, and the ones closest to me aren't close enough for the aerial imagery to display when panning to my place.

    • +2

The "estimate" tab on the search box (main page) should hopefully let you search for your address.

  • +1

Can I use this to spy on north korea

    • +3

You need to have a Peong yang house listed on that

    • +2

Meh, the 5eyes is spying on you. Ha

    • +1

They can use it to spy on you 😅

  • +12

I think Nearmap uses aerial photos not satellite .thats the reason for its costly subscription which is useful mostly for corporates for highly accurate imaging

    • +9

Nearmaps charters small aircraft for regular aerial photos.

They have been so good at it, private company bought them up, and they are no longer listed on the ASX.

( I was using their services, more than 14 years ago )

      • +4

Ever use hypertiles? Those were the days. Could stich the whole of Brisbane for one massive high res photo.

Private and govt used to get it all for free then they commecialised it

  • +2

    Nice. Now what to do?

  • +7

If you’re in Queensland, there is a free portal Queensland Globe that has high res aerial imagery with decades of history and hundreds of relevant property overlays.

    • +1

It's flown yearly in June/July. The advantage of near map is the higher frequency.

      • -4

What's the use case for needing more recently updated imagery that you access in this way?

        • +3

Site access, solar quoting, town planning, construction, real estate, tree lopping, and so on.

Saves site visits, because you can see recent changes.

    • This is very different

      • In what way that isn’t positive re the use cases advertised?

Post was about a workaround to get high res aerial imagery. This site not many people know about, but provides high res aerial imagery for free, forever, with no workarounds.

  • +25

Ozbargained? Map data is not loading

    • +5

      {"error":"Rate limit exceeded"}

    • Could you help me out? If you're on this website, you could just get off. I'd appreciate it.

We're having a little problem here.

We figured out why I cannot access the satellite imagery, because there are 570 Ozbargainers currently operating on this site.

We cannot deal with that, so we have two choices.

      Steve Jobs

    • Started working again just now for me. Not sure how long it will last this time.

  • +8

It looks like the imagery may be outdated, maybe 6-12 months delayed if that matters?

    • +7

100%. compared it with my work one on my home town and its 18 months old and there are 3 newer images available.

    • Agreed. For my place it's about 13-14 months old.

    • Yup for sure. Looking at old markers in my suburb.

  • +6

Also you can view non geo fenced imagery by looking at the map on the right hand side of the suburb search page. Change map type to satellite.

  • lol.. oh no..

  • +4

You can look at it anywhere using the sidebar view of the site search on desktop, just pan around. But it's at least 9 months old, at least over my house.

  • -6

Am I signing up for something or it's just a free access available for long time, which makes it a Long Running deal

  • +1

Pretty handy. I use nearmaps for work and love it.

    • -1

So you already have full access without this one weird trick to get limited access?

      • yeah. my work gets a basic version so for me it just gives land lots with address and land size. you can measure distances and area pretty accurately. Also view aerial photos going back 10 or 15 years. Generally one or two photos taken every year or so. its easy to see changes with a side by side function or slide across between 2 photos.
i did notice while looking at my home town that the photo being used was 18 months old, got 3 newer photos available to me. still a detailed photo, just dated.

  • What a coincidence that my work is getting up us for using Nearmap too much…

  • What is view.com.au ?
It looks like a clone of a well-known website.

    • +5

looks to be an aggregator which feeds info from domain and realestate. I've found that it sometimes lists a few off market properties where the seller doesn't want to pay for a listing on the big sites.

      • +1

        few off market properties

That's good, if View uses ForSaleByOwner listings as well.

      • Does it fetch information from Domain and RealEstate, I couldn't find evidence of View doing that except in the FAQ which alluded to the fact it gets its information from 'third party providers and public records', but it could be possible there's other APIs or sites that might be available with this information

    • +1

View looks to be an independent company in the Real Estate advertising online space, separate from RealEstate.com.au and Domain.com.au. Backed by View Media Group who operates several other online businesses. I do not see if View Media Group is owned by anyone else, so it's good to see that there is a potential upcoming rival to those RealEstate/Domain Aussie RE websites owned by shitters NewsCorp and FairFax (though FairFax doesn't own Domain.com.au anymore, it belongs to an international company CoStar as of May 2025).

      • I'm pretty sure View was previously RealEstateView that was run by the Real Estate Institute of Victoria, who are a part regulator / part lobby group for RE agents.

This website is a challenge to the REA / Domain duopoly, that can increase prices of their service without consequence.

So its an attempt by the RE industry to claw back revenue stolen by outsiders. Saints, they are not 😅

  • +1

Heaps of online solar calculators / trials also use high res imagery.

  • +17

A free alternative to nearmap is vexcel, who provide the aerial photography for Google Maps (but more recent ortho is available). Just need to sign up with a free account to access the viewer.

    • +6

the real deal is always in the comments

    • I cannot get both this deal and vexcel to work on my phone, is it only limited to desktop? I can only view the company info on their site , but the map viewer.

    • This should be the main deal

  • +4

It’s not loading for me, so I can’t do a direct comparison, but if you’re in the ACT ACTmapi has much better and more recent aerial photography than Google Maps, and is free to use. You can also load previous aerial imagery as tiles (where it has them, specific to month and year). Useful resource if you don’t already know about it.

  • +9

OzBargained? Getting no aerial imagery and noticing HTTP 429 Too Many Requests errors (in the console).

    • +2

yep! When I click satellite on any listing the satellite image isn't even loading it just the plain map style.

  • +4

Now the owner is surprised why so many people are interested in his/her house.

    • +11

If OP is selling the property, they're a genius.

  • You can select any address by clicking on 'Estimate'.

  • +5

I think we successfully DDOSed the site. lol

    • Exactly what I was going to say :-D

      • lol

    • We OZBargained it lol

Luckily I grabbed some screen shots earlier of the areas I was interested in.

  • Also from some council webiste, when you check the da on the map, it allows you to have a look around as they use Nearmap as base.

  • +6

Ozbargain strikes again. Can everyone get back to work now??

  • This is fantastic ! Definitely not going to use for nefarious purposes …

  • +2

That particular unit will be super popular with sudden increase of clicks

  • +1

Mine's just a white page with a few highway names… Tried incognito, even tried edge

  • +1

What am I doing wrong? Not working on any browser right now.
Just see a white page with some street names.

    • same here

    • +3

You didn't read the comments above yours

  • +6

Their Nearmaps API key has been rate limited.

Also, fantastic design in having a raw API key in the image URL. Might hold onto that for later 😁

    • Started working again just now.

    • About to say the same thing. Can imagine the calls on it and the likely overage for View after this has been featured on this site

    • A bit of creative googling after seeing your comment has landed me a good half dozen other API keys for AU/US/CA nearmap. Handy stockpile for adding as QGIS layers
